NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
' "You wil not make idols for yourselves; you will not erect statues or cultic stones, or erect carvedstones in your country, for you to worship: for I, Yahweh, am your God.1 I am the Lord your God: you shall not make to yourselves any idol or graven thing, neither shall you erect pillars, nor set up a remarkable stone in your land, to adore it: for I am the Lord your God.
You will keep my Sabbaths and revere my sanctuary. I am Yahweh.2 Keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord.
"If you live according to my laws, if you keep my commandments and put them into practice,3 If you walk in my precepts, and keep my commandments, and do them, I will give you rein in due seasons.
I shal give you the rain you need at the right time; the soil wil yield its produce and the trees of thecountryside their fruit;4 And the ground shall bring forth its increase, and the trees shall be filled with fruit.
you wil thresh until vintage time and gather grapes until sowing time. You wil eat your fill of bread andlive secure in your land.5 The threshing of your harvest shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and you shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land without fear.
"I shall give peace in the land, and you wil go to sleep with no one to frighten you. I shal rid the land of beasts of prey. The sword wil not pass through your land.6 I will give peace in your coasts: you shall sleep, and there shall be none to make you afraid. I will take away evil beasts: and the sword shall not pass through your quarters.
You will pursue your enemies and they wil fal before your sword;7 You shall pursue your enemies, and they shall fall before you.
five of you pursuing a hundred of them, one hundred pursuing ten thousand; and your enemies wil falbefore your sword.8 Five of yours shall pursue a hundred others, and a hundred of you ten thousand: your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.
"I shall turn towards you, I shal make you fertile and make your numbers grow, and I shal uphold mycovenant with you.9 I will look on you, and make you increase: you shell be multiplied, and I will establish my covenant with you.
"Having eaten al you need of last year's harvest, you will throw out the old to make room for the new.10 You shall eat the oldest of the old store, and, new coming on, you shall cast away the old.
"I shal fix my home among you and never reject you.11 I will set my tabernacle in the midst of you, and my soul shall not cast you off.
I shall live among you; I shall be your God and you will be my people,12 I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you shall be my people.
I, Yahweh your God, who brought you out of Egypt so that you should be their slaves no longer, andwho broke the bonds of your yoke and made you walk with head held high.13 I am the Lord your God: who have brought you out of the land of the Egyptians, that you should not serve them, and who have broken the chains of your necks, that you might go upright.
"But if you wil not listen to me and do not put all these commandments into practice,14 But if you will not hear me, nor do all my commandments,
if you reject my laws and detest my customs, and you break my covenant by not putting al mycommandments into practice,15 If you despise my laws, and contemn my judgments so as not to do those things which are appointed by me, and to make void my covenant:
this is how I shal treat you: "I shal subject you to terror, consumption and fever, making you dim ofsight and short of breath. You wil sow your seed in vain, for your enemies wil eat it.16 I also will do these things to you: I will quickly visit you with poverty, and burning heat, which shall waste your eyes, and consume your lives. You shall sow your seed in vain, which shall be devoured by your enemies.
I shall turn against you and you wil be defeated by your enemies. Your foes wil have the masteryover you, and you wil flee when no one is pursuing you.17 I will set my face against you, and you shall fall down before your enemies, and shall be made subject to them that hate you, you shall flee when no man pursueth you.
"And if, in spite of this, you will not listen to me, I shal punish you seven times over for your sins.18 But if you will not yet for all this obey me: I will chastise you seven times more for your sins,
I shall break your proud strength. I shal make the sky like iron for you, and your soil like bronze.19 And I will break the pride of your stubbornness, and I will make to you the heaven above as iron, and the earth as brass:
You wil wear out your strength in vain, your land will not yield its produce, nor the trees of the countrytheir fruit.20 Your labour shall be spent in vain, the ground shall not bring forth her increase, nor the trees yield their fruit.
"And if you go against me and wil not listen to me, I shall heap seven times more plagues on you foryour sins.21 If you walk contrary to me, and will not hearken to me, I will bring seven times more plagues upon you for your sins:
I shall send wild animals to attack you and rob you of your children, destroy your cattle and reduceyour numbers until your roads are deserted.22 And I will send in upon you the beasts of the held, to destroy you and your cattle, and make you few in number, and that your highways may be desolate.
"And if that does not reform you, and you stil go against me,23 And if even so you will not amend, but will walk contrary to me:
then I shal go against you and punish you another seven times over for your sins.24 I also will walk contrary to you, and will strike you seven times for your sins.
I shall bring the sword on you, which will avenge the covenant, and when you huddle inside yourtowns, I shal send pestilence among you, and you will fal into the enemy's clutches.25 And I will bring in upon you the sword that shall avenge my covenant. And when you shall flee into the cities, I will send the pestilence in the midst of you, and you shall be delivered into the hands of your enemies,
When I take away the bread which supports you, ten women wil be able to bake your bread in oneoven and wil then dole your bread out by weight; you wil eat but not be satisfied.26 After I shall have broken the staff of your bread: so that ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and give it out by weight: and you shall eat, and shall not be filled.
"And if, in spite of this, you will not listen to me but go against me,27 But if you will not for all this hearken to me, but will walk against me:
I shall go against you in fury and punish you seven times over for your sins.28 I will also go against you with opposite fury, and I will chastise you with seven plagues for your sins,
You wil eat the flesh of your own sons, you wil eat the flesh of your own daughters.29 So that you shall eat the flesh of your sons and of your daughters.
I shall destroy your high places and smash your incense-altars; I shal pile your corpses on thecorpses of your foul idols and shall reject you.30 I will destroy your high places, and break your idols. You shall fall among the ruins of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you.
I shall reduce your cities to ruins; I shal lay waste your sanctuary and refuse to inhale from yousmel s intended to please.31 Insomuch that I will bring your cities to be a wilderness, and I will make your sanctuaries desolate, and will receive no more your sweet odours.
I shall make such a desolation of the country that your enemies who come to live there wil beappal ed by it.32 And I will destroy your land, and your enemies shall be astonished at it, when they shall be the inhabitants thereof.
And I shal scatter you among the nations. I shal unsheathe the sword against you, reducing yourcountry to desert and your towns to ruins.33 And I will scatter you among the Gentiles, and I will draw out the sword after you, and your land shall be desert, and your cities destroyed.
Then the country wil indeed observe its Sabbaths, al the while it lies deserted, while you are in thecountry of your enemies. Then indeed the country wil rest and observe its Sabbaths.34 Then shell the land enjoy her sabbaths all the days of her desolation: when you shall be
And as it lies deserted it will rest, as it never did on your Sabbaths when you were living there.35 In the enemy's land, she shall keep a sabbath, and rest in the sabbaths of her desolation, because she did not rest in your sabbaths when you dwelt therein.
I shall strike such fear into the hearts of those of you who survive in the countries of their enemiesthat the sound of a fal ing leaf will set them fleeing; they wil flee as though fleeing from the sword, and fal whenno one is pursuing.36 And as to them that shall remain of you I will send fear in their hearts in the countries of their enemies, the sound of a flying leaf shall terrify them, and they shall flee as it were from the sword: they shall fall, when no man pursueth them,
They will stumble over one another as though fleeing before the sword, when no one is pursuing. You wil be powerless to stand up to your enemies;37 And they shall every one fall upon their brethren as fleeing from wars, none of you shall dare to resist your enemies.
you wil perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies wil swal ow you up.38 You shall perish among the Gentiles, and an enemy's land shall consume you.
Those of you who survive wil pine away in their guilt in the countries of their enemies and, bearingthe guilt of their ancestors too, wil pine away like them.39 And if of them also some remain, they shall pine away in their iniquities, in the land of their enemies, and they shall be afflicted for the sins of their fathers, and their own:
"Then they shal admit their guilt and that of their ancestors and their infidelities against me, andfurther, their setting themselves against me.40 Until they confess their iniquities and the iniquities of their ancestors, whereby they have transgressed me, and walked contrary unto me.
"I in my turn wil go against them and bring them into the land of their enemies. Then theiruncircumcised hearts wil grow humble and then they wil accept the punishment for their guilt.41 Therefore I also will walk them, and bring them into their enemies' land until their uncircumcised mind be ashamed: then shall they pray for their sins.
I shall remember my covenant with Jacob, I shal remember my covenant with Isaac and mycovenant with Abraham; and I shal remember the country too.42 And I will remember my covenant, that I made with Jacob, and Isaac, and Abraham. I will remember also the land:
"Abandoned, the country wil keep its Sabbaths, as it lies deserted in their absence, and they wilhave to accept the punishment for their guilt, since they detested my customs and rejected my laws.43 Which when she shall be left by them, shall enjoy her sabbaths, being desolate for them. But they shall pray for their sins, because they rejected my judgments, and despised my laws.
"Yet, in spite of al this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I shall not so utterly reject ordetest them as to destroy them completely and break my covenant with them; for I am Yahweh their God.44 And yet for all that when they were in the land of their enemies, I did not cast them off altogether, neither did I so despise them that they should be quite consumed, and I should make void my covenant with them. For I am the Lord their God.
For their sake I shall remember the covenant I made with those first generations that I brought out ofEgypt while other nations watched, so that I should be their God, I, Yahweh." '45 And I will remember my former covenant, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, in the sight of the Gentiles, to be their God. I am the Lord. These are the judgments, and precepts, and laws, which the Lord gave between him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.
Such were the decrees, customs and laws which Yahweh established between himself and theIsraelites on Mount Sinai through Moses.
