NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
1 Step down! Sit in the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon. Sit on the ground, no throne, daughter of theChaldaeans, for never again will you be cal ed tender and delicate.1 Descende, sede in pulvere,
virgo filia Babylon;
sede in terra sine solio,
filia Chaldaeorum,
quia ultra non vocaberis
mollis et tenera.
2 Take the grinding mil , crush up the meal. Remove your veil, tie up your skirt, bare your legs, cross therivers.2 Tolle molam et mole farinam;
depone velum tuum,
subleva stolam, revela crura,
transi flumina.
3 Let your nakedness be displayed and your shame exposed. I am going to take vengeance and no onewil stand in my way.3 Revelabitur ignominia tua,
et videbitur opprobrium tuum.
“ Ultionem capiam,
nemini parcam ”,
4 Our redeemer, Yahweh Sabaoth is his name, the Holy One of Israel, says:4 dicit Redemptor noster, Dominus exercituum nomen illius,
Sanctus Israel.
5 Sit in silence, bury yourself in darkness, daughter of the Chaldaeans, for never again wil you be cal edthe mistress of kingdoms.5 Sede tacens et intra in tenebras,
filia Chaldaeorum,
quia non vocaberis ultra
Domina regnorum.
6 Being angry with my people, I rejected my heritage, surrendering them into your clutches. You showedthem no mercy, you made your yoke very heavy on the aged.6 Iratus sum super populum meum,
contaminavi hereditatem meam
et dedi eos in manu tua;
non posuisti eis misericordias,
super senem aggravasti iugum tuum valde
7 You thought, 'I shal be a queen for ever.' You did not reflect on these matters or think about the future.7 et dixisti: “ In sempiternum ero domina ”.
Non posuisti haec super cor tuum
neque recordata es novissimi tui.
8 Now listen to this, voluptuous woman, lolling at ease and thinking to yourself, 'I am the only one whomatters. I shal never be widowed, never know bereavement.'8 Et nunc audi haec, delicata,
quae habitas confidenter
et dicis in corde tuo:
“ Ego, et praeter me non est altera, non sedebo vidua et orbitatem ignorabo”.
9 Yet both these things wil befall you, suddenly, in one day. Bereavement and widowhood wil suddenlybefal you in spite of al your witchcraft and the potency of your spel s.9 Venient tibi duo haec
subito in die una,
orbitas et viduitas;
repente venerunt super te
propter multitudinem maleficiorum tuorum,
propter abundantiam incantationum tuarum.
10 Confident in your wickedness, you thought, 'No one can see me.' Your wishes and your knowledgewere what deluded you, as you thought to yourself, 'I am the only one who matters.'10 Et fiduciam habuisti in malitia tua
et dixisti: “ Non est qui videat me ”.
Sapientia tua et scientia tua,
haec decepit te.
Et dixisti in corde tuo:
“ Ego, et praeter me non est altera ”.
11 Hence, disaster wil befal you which you wil not know how to charm away, calamity overtake youwhich you wil not be able to avert, ruination will suddenly befal you, such as you have never known.11 Veniet super te malum,
et nescies avertere;
et irruet super te calamitas,
quam non poteris expiare;
veniet super te repente
miseria, quam nescies.
12 Keep to your spel s then, and al your sorceries, at which you have worked so hard since you wereyoung. Perhaps you wil succeed, perhaps you wil strike terror!12 Sta cum incantationibus tuis
et cum multitudine maleficiorum tuorum,
in quibus laborasti ab adulescentia tua:
forte poteris iuvari, forte terrebis.
13 You have had many tiring consultations: let the astrologers come forward now and save you, the star-gazers who announce month by month what wil happen to you next.13 Defecisti in multitudine consiliorum tuorum;
stent et salvent te, qui metiuntur caelum,
qui contemplantur sidera
et annuntiant singulis noviluniis
ventura tibi.
14 Look, they are like wisps of straw, the fire wil burn them up. They will not save their lives from thepower of the flame. No embers these, for keeping warm, no fire to sit beside!14 Ecce facti sunt quasi stipula,
ignis combussit eos.
Non liberabunt seipsos
de manu flammae;
non sunt prunae, quibus calefiant,
nec focus, ut sedeant ad eum.
15 Such wil your wizards prove to be for you, for whom you have worked so hard since you were young;each wandering his own way, none of them can save you.15 Sic fiunt tibi incantatores tui,
in quibuscumque laborasti ab adulescentia tua;
unusquisque in via sua errat,
non est qui salvet te.
