NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
At that time, the king of Babylon, Merodach-Baladan son of Baladan, sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah, for he had heard of his illness and his recovery.1 At that time when Merodach-baladan, son of Baladan, king of Babylon, heard that Hezekiah had recovered from his sickness, he sent letters and gifts to him.
Hezekiah was delighted at this and showed the ambassadors his entire treasury, the silver, gold, spices, precious oil, his armoury too, and everything to be seen in his storehouses. There was nothing in hispalace or in his whole domain that Hezekiah did not show them.2 Hezekiah was pleased at this, and therefore showed the messengers his treasury, the silver and gold, the spices and fine oil, his whole armory, and everything that was in his storerooms; there was nothing in his house or in his whole realm that he did not show them.
The prophet Isaiah then came to King Hezekiah and asked him, 'What have these men said, and wherehave they come to you from?' Hezekiah answered, 'They have come from a distant country, from Babylon.'3 Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah and asked him, "What did these men say to you? Where did they come from?" Hezekiah answered, "They came to me from a distant land, from Babylon."
Isaiah said, 'What have they seen in your palace?' 'They have seen everything in my palace,' Hezekiahanswered. 'There is nothing in my storehouses that I have not shown them.'4 "What did they see in your house?" he asked. Hezekiah replied, "They saw everything in my house; there is nothing in my storerooms that I did not show them."
Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, 'Listen to the word of Yahweh Sabaoth,5 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, "Hear the word of the LORD of hosts:
"The days are coming when everything in your palace, everything that your ancestors have amasseduntil now, wil be carried off to Babylon. Not a thing wil be left," Yahweh says.6 Behold, the days shall come when all that is in your house, and everything that your fathers have stored up until this day, shall be carried off to Babylon; nothing shall be left, says the LORD.
"Sons sprung from you, sons begotten by you, will be abducted to be eunuchs in the palace of the kingof Babylon." '7 Some of your own bodily descendants shall be taken and made servants in the palace of the king of Babylon."
Hezekiah said to Isaiah, 'This word of Yahweh that you announce is reassuring,' for he was thinking,'There is going to be peace and security during my lifetime.'8 Hezekiah replied to Isaiah, "The word of the LORD which you have spoken is favorable." For he thought, "There will be peace and security in my lifetime."
