NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
1 Do not put your confidence in your money or say, 'With this I am self-sufficient.'1 Noli attendere ad possessiones iniquas,
et ne dixeris : Est mihi sufficiens vita :
nihil enim proderit in tempore vindictæ et obductionis.
2 Do not be led by your appetites and energy to follow the passions of your heart.2 Ne sequaris in fortitudine tua concupiscentiam cordis tui,
3 And do not say, 'Who has authority over me?' for the Lord will certainly give you your deserts.3 et ne dixeris : Quomodo potui ?
aut, Quis me subjiciet propter facta mea ?
Deus enim vindicans vindicabit.
4 Do not say, 'I have sinned, but what harm has befal en me?' for the Lord's forbearance is long.4 Ne dixeris : Peccavi : et quid mihi accidit triste ?
Altissimus enim est patiens redditor.
5 Do not be so sure of forgiveness that you add sin to sin.5 De propitiatio peccato noli esse sine metu,
neque adjicias peccatum super peccatum.
6 And do not say, 'His compassion is great, he will forgive me my many sins'; for with him are both mercyand retribution, and his anger does not pass from sinners.6 Et ne dicas : Miseratio Domini magna est,
multitudinis peccatorum meorum miserebitur :
7 Do not delay your return to the Lord, do not put it off day after day; for suddenly the Lord's wrath wilblaze out, and on the day of punishment you wil be utterly destroyed.7 misericordia enim et ira ab illo cito proximant,
et in peccatores respicit ira illius.
8 Do not set your heart on il -gotten gains, they wil be of no use to you on the day of disaster.8 Non tardes converti ad Dominum,
et ne differas de die in diem :
9 Do not winnow in every wind, or walk along every by-way (as the double-talking sinner does).9 subito enim veniet ira illius,
et in tempore vindictæ disperdet te.
10 Be steady in your convictions, and be a person of your word.10 Noli anxius esse in divitiis injustis :
non enim proderunt tibi in die obductionis et vindictæ.
11 Be quick to listen, and deliberate in giving an answer.11 Non ventiles te in omnem ventum,
et non eas in omnem viam :
sic enim omnis peccator probatur in duplici lingua.
12 If you understand the matter, give your neighbour an answer, if not, keep your hand over your mouth.12 Esto firmus in via Domini,
et in veritate sensus tui et scientia :
et prosequatur te verbum pacis et justitiæ.
13 Both honour and disgrace come from talking, the tongue is its owner's downfal .13 Esto mansuetus ad audiendum verbum, ut intelligas,
et cum sapientia proferas responsum verum.
14 Do not get a name for scandal-mongering, do not set traps with your tongue; for as shame lies in storefor the thief, so harsh condemnation awaits the deceitful.14 Si est tibi intellectus, responde proximo :
sin autem, sit manus tua super os tuum,
ne capiaris in verbo indisciplinato, et confundaris.
15 Avoid offences in great as in smal matters, and do not exchange friendship for enmity,15 Honor et gloria in sermone sensati :
lingua vero imprudentis subversio est ipsius.
16 Non appelleris susurro,
et lingua tua ne capiaris et confundaris :
17 super furem enim est confusio et p?nitentia,
et denotatio pessima super bilinguem :
susurratori autem odium, et inimicitia, et contumelia.
18 Justifica pusillum
et magnum similiter.
