Sirach 5

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Do not put your confidence in your money or say, 'With this I am self-sufficient.'	1 Non confidare nelle tue ricchezze inique, e non dire: «Ho abbastanza per vivere»; perchè ciò non gioverà a nulla nel tempo della vendetta e del castigo.
2 Do not be led by your appetites and energy to follow the passions of your heart.	2 Non seguire, nel [rigoglio della] tua forza, la concupiscenza del tuo cuore.
3 And do not say, 'Who has authority over me?' for the Lord will certainly give you your deserts.	3 E non dire: « Come lo sono potente! » ovvero: « Chi mi assoggetterà per via delle mie azioni?»; perchè il Signore farà di te severa vendetta.
4 Do not say, 'I have sinned, but what harm has befal en me?' for the Lord's forbearance is long.	4 Non dire: «Ho peccato e che m'è accaduto di male?» perchè l'Altissimo è longanime nel pagare.
5 Do not be so sure of forgiveness that you add sin to sin.	5 Circa il peccato espiato non esser senza timore, nè aggiunger peccato a peccato.
6 And do not say, 'His compassion is great, he will forgive me my many sins'; for with him are both mercyand retribution, and his anger does not pass from sinners.	6 E non dire: «La misericordia del Signore è grande, e mi perdonerà la moltitudine de' miei peccati»;
7 Do not delay your return to the Lord, do not put it off day after day; for suddenly the Lord's wrath wilblaze out, and on the day of punishment you wil be utterly destroyed.	7 perchè la misericordia e l'ira vengono da lui prontamente, e sui peccatori mira il suo furore.
8 Do not set your heart on il -gotten gains, they wil be of no use to you on the day of disaster.	8 Non tardar a convertirti al Signore, non differire di giorno in giorno,
9 Do not winnow in every wind, or walk along every by-way (as the double-talking sinner does).	9 perchè a un tratto verrà l'ira del Signore, e nel tempo della vendetta ti perderà.
10 Be steady in your convictions, and be a person of your word.	10 Non agognare ingiuste ricchezze, perchè non ti gioveranno nel giorno del castigo e della vendetta.
11 Be quick to listen, and deliberate in giving an answer.	11 Non ti volgere ad ogni vento, e non andar per ogni via, perchè cosi [fa] il peccatore bilingue.
12 If you understand the matter, give your neighbour an answer, if not, keep your hand over your mouth.	12 Sta' fermo nella via del Signore e nella verità del tuo sentimento e nel sapere, e t'accompagni la parola di pace e di giustizia.
13 Both honour and disgrace come from talking, the tongue is its owner's downfal .	13 Sii paziente ad ascoltar la parola, affln di capire, e con saviezza dà una risposta vera.
14 Do not get a name for scandal-mongering, do not set traps with your tongue; for as shame lies in storefor the thief, so harsh condemnation awaits the deceitful.	14 Se hai capacità, rispondi al tuo prossimo; se no, la tua mano stia sulla tua bocca, per non restar preso in qualche stolta parola e averne rossore.
15 Avoid offences in great as in smal matters, and do not exchange friendship for enmity,	15 Onore e gloria son nel discorso dell'uomo assennato, ma la lingua dell'imprudente è la sua rovina.
	16 Non meritarti il nome di maldicente, e non ti lasciar cogliere a motivo della tua lingua ed esser svergognato.
	17 Perchè sul ladro ricade vergogna e rimorso e triste infamia sull'uomo bilingue: al maldicente poi [tocca] odio, inimicizia e obbrobrio,
	18 Rendi giustizia al grande e al piccolo ugualmente.
