Sirach 5

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Do not put your confidence in your money or say, 'With this I am self-sufficient.'	1 No te fíes de tus riquezas ni digas: «Con esto me basta».
2 Do not be led by your appetites and energy to follow the passions of your heart.	2 No dejes que tu deseo y tu fuerza te lleven a obrar según tus caprichos.
3 And do not say, 'Who has authority over me?' for the Lord will certainly give you your deserts.	3 No digas: «¿Quién podrá dominarme?», porque el Señor da a cada uno su merecido.
4 Do not say, 'I have sinned, but what harm has befal en me?' for the Lord's forbearance is long.	4 No digas: «Pequé, ¿y qué me sucedió?, porque el Señor es paciente.
5 Do not be so sure of forgiveness that you add sin to sin.	5 No estés tan seguro del perdón, mientras cometes un pecado tras otro.
6 And do not say, 'His compassion is great, he will forgive me my many sins'; for with him are both mercyand retribution, and his anger does not pass from sinners.	6 No digas: «Su compasión es grande; él perdonará la multitud de mis pecados», porque en él está la misericordia, pero también la ira, y su indignación recae sobre los pecadores.
7 Do not delay your return to the Lord, do not put it off day after day; for suddenly the Lord's wrath wilblaze out, and on the day of punishment you wil be utterly destroyed.	7 No tardes en volver al Señor, dejando pasar un día tras otro, porque la ira del Señor irrumpirá súbitamente y perecerás en el momento del castigo.
8 Do not set your heart on il -gotten gains, they wil be of no use to you on the day of disaster.	8 No te fíes de las riquezas adquiridas injustamente: de nada te servirán en el día de la desgracia.
9 Do not winnow in every wind, or walk along every by-way (as the double-talking sinner does).	9 No te dejes llevar por todos los vientos ni vayas por cualquier camino: así obra el pecador que habla con doblez.
10 Be steady in your convictions, and be a person of your word.	10 Sé firme en tus convicciones y que tu palabra sea una sola.
11 Be quick to listen, and deliberate in giving an answer.	11 Está siempre dispuesto a escuchar y sé lento para responder.
12 If you understand the matter, give your neighbour an answer, if not, keep your hand over your mouth.	12 Si sabes, responde a tu prójimo; de lo contrario, quédate callado.
13 Both honour and disgrace come from talking, the tongue is its owner's downfal .	13 Las palabras traen gloria o deshonor, y la lengua del hombre puede provocar su caída.
14 Do not get a name for scandal-mongering, do not set traps with your tongue; for as shame lies in storefor the thief, so harsh condemnation awaits the deceitful.	14 Que no tengan que llamarte chismoso, y no seas insidioso al hablar, porque la vergüenza pesa sobre el ladrón y una severa condena sobre el que habla con doblez.
15 Avoid offences in great as in smal matters, and do not exchange friendship for enmity,	15 No faltes ni en lo grande ni en lo pequeño, y de amigo, no te vuelvas enemigo,
