Sirach 5

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA MARTINI
1 Do not put your confidence in your money or say, 'With this I am self-sufficient.'	1 Non confidare nelle inique ricchezze, e non dire; io ho abbastanza da vivere; perocché ciò non gioverà nulla nel tempo della vendetta, e della oscurità.
2 Do not be led by your appetites and energy to follow the passions of your heart.	2 Perché tu sii forte, non seguire i pravi desiderj del tuo cuore:
3 And do not say, 'Who has authority over me?' for the Lord will certainly give you your deserts.	3 E non dire: Gran possanza è la mia! ovvero: chi mi farà render conto delle opere mie? Perocché Dio ne farà atroce vendetta.
4 Do not say, 'I have sinned, but what harm has befal en me?' for the Lord's forbearance is long.	4 Non dire: Ho peccato, e che me n'è venuto di male? perocché l'Altissimo è pagatore benché paziente.
5 Do not be so sure of forgiveness that you add sin to sin.	5 Del peccato rimesso non esserne senza timore: e non aggiungere peccato a peccato.
6 And do not say, 'His compassion is great, he will forgive me my many sins'; for with him are both mercyand retribution, and his anger does not pass from sinners.	6 E non dire: La bontà del Signore è grande: egli avrà misericordia de' molti peccati miei.
7 Do not delay your return to the Lord, do not put it off day after day; for suddenly the Lord's wrath wilblaze out, and on the day of punishment you wil be utterly destroyed.	7 Imperocché la misericordia, e l'ira da lui si partono speditamente: e l'ira di lui tien l'occhio fisso sul peccatore.
8 Do not set your heart on il -gotten gains, they wil be of no use to you on the day of disaster.	8 Non tardare a convertirti al Signore, e non differire di un dì all'altro.
9 Do not winnow in every wind, or walk along every by-way (as the double-talking sinner does).	9 Perocché repentinamente scoppia l'ira di lui, ed egli nel tempo della vendetta ti sperderà.
10 Be steady in your convictions, and be a person of your word.	10 Non essere ansioso di ingiusto ricchezze; perocché non gioveranno a te nel tempo della oscurità, e della vendetta.
11 Be quick to listen, and deliberate in giving an answer.	11 Non ti volgere ad ogni vento, e non camminare per ogni strada; perocché di ciò si convince reo ogni peccatore, che ha due lingue.
12 If you understand the matter, give your neighbour an answer, if not, keep your hand over your mouth.	12 Sta tu costante nella via del Signore, e nella verità de' tuoi sentimenti, e nella tua scienza: e teco venga la parola di pace, e di giustizia.
13 Both honour and disgrace come from talking, the tongue is its owner's downfal .	13 Ascolta con mansuetudine la parola affin di capirla, e per dare con saggezza una risposta verace.
14 Do not get a name for scandal-mongering, do not set traps with your tongue; for as shame lies in storefor the thief, so harsh condemnation awaits the deceitful.	14 Se tu hai intelligenza rispondi al tuo prossimo, se no, mettiti il dito alla bocca, affin di non restar preso per qualche parola imprudente, ed averne vergogna.
15 Avoid offences in great as in smal matters, and do not exchange friendship for enmity,	15 L'onore, e la gloria (seguono) il discorso dell'uom sensato; ma la lingua dell'imprudente è sua rovina.
	16 Guardati dal nome di detrattore, e che la tua lingua non sia tuo laccio, e tua vergogna.
	17 Perocché la confusione, e il pentimento sta sopra il ladro; e infamia grandissima sopra l'uom di due lingue: al detrattore poi è serbato l'odio, la nimicizia, e l'obbrobrio.
	18 Rendi giustizia egualmente al piccolo, e al grande.
