NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Making your neighbour a loan is an act of mercy, to lend him a helping hand is to keep thecommandments.	1 Qui connaît la compassion, prête à son prochain, celui qui lui vient en aide observe les commandements.
2 Lend to your neighbour in his time of need, and in your turn repay your neighbour on time.	2 Prête à ton prochain s’il est dans le besoin; de ton côté, rembourse ton prochain au temps fixé.
3 Be as good as your word and keep faith with him, and you wil find your needs met every time.	3 Tiens parole, sois loyal avec ton prochain, et en tout temps tu trouveras ce qu’il te faut.
4 Many treat a loan as a windfal , and embarrass those who have come to their rescue.	4 Pour beaucoup, le prêt qu’on leur a fait n’est qu’une aubaine; ils mettront en difficulté ceux qui les ont aidés.
5 Until he gets something, a man wil kiss his neighbour's hand, and refer diffidently to his wealth; butwhen the loan fal s due, he puts this off, he repays with offhand words, and pleads the inconvenience of the time.	5 Tant qu’on n’a pas reçu, on baise les mains du prochain, on se fait humble en pensant à ce qu’il a; mais au moment de rendre on demande un sursis, on paye en paroles déplaisantes, on gémit sur la dureté des temps.
6 Even if he can be made to pay, his creditor wil recover barely half, and consider even that a windfal .But otherwise he wil be cheated of his money, and undeservedly gain himself an enemy; the man wil pay himback in curses and abuse, and with insults instead of honour.	6 Même si on peut rembourser, le prêteur aura de la chance s’il en récupère la moitié. Dans le cas contraire, il s’est fait prendre son argent et il n’y a gagné qu’un ennemi; celui-ci le paiera en malédictions et insultes, avec du mépris au lieu de reconnaissance.
7 Many, not out of malice, refuse to lend; they are merely anxious not to be cheated for nothing.	7 Bien des gens refusent de prêter, non par méchanceté, mais par peur d’être dépouillés sans raison.
8 Nevertheless, be patient with those who are badly off, do not keep them waiting on your generosity.	8 Sois pourtant généreux envers le pauvre, ne le laisse pas attendre ton aumône.
9 In obedience to the commandment, help the poor; do not turn the poor away empty-handed in theirneed.	9 Selon le commandement, prends soin de l’indigent; vois quel est son besoin, et ne le renvoie pas les mains vides.
10 Spend your money on your brother or your friend, do not leave it under a stone to rust away.	10 Perds ton argent pour un frère ou un ami, plutôt que de le laisser rouiller sous une pierre en pure perte.
11 Use your wealth as the Most High has decreed; you will find that more profitable than gold.	11 Place ton trésor selon les commandements du Très-Haut, cela te sera plus utile que de l’or.
12 Stock your store-rooms with almsgiving; this will save you from al misfortune.	12 Remplis tes greniers de tes générosités, elles te garderont du malheur;
13 Better than sturdy shield or weighty spear, this will fight for you against the enemy.	13 face à l’ennemi elles combattront pour toi, mieux qu’un solide bouclier ou une lourde lance.
14 A good man wil go surety for his neighbour; only a shameless wretch would desert him.	14 L’homme de bien se porte garant pour son prochain; il faudrait avoir perdu toute honte pour l’abandonner.
15 Do not forget the favour your guarantor has done you; he has given his life for you.	15 N’oublie pas les services de ton garant; il s’est risqué pour toi.
16 A sinner is careless of his guarantor's prosperity, the ungrateful forgets his deliverer.	16 Mais le pécheur gaspille les biens de son répondant; c’est un ingrat, il oublie celui qui l’a sauvé.
17 Going surety has ruined many who were prosperous, tossing them about in a heavy sea.	17 Une caution a ruiné bien des gens à l’aise, elle les a secoués comme l’écume des mers.
18 It has driven the powerful from home to wander among foreign nations.	18 Elle a forcé des hommes puissants à s’expatrier, faisant d’eux des errants en des nations étrangères.
19 A wicked man in a hurry to stand guarantor in the hope of profit, is hurrying to be sentenced.	19 Le pécheur se porte garant quand il pense en tirer profit, mais ce sont des procès qu’il va récolter.
20 Come to your neighbour's help as far as you can, but take care not to fall into the same plight.	20 Viens en aide à ton prochain autant que tu le peux, mais veille à ne pas tomber toi-même.
21 The first thing in life is water, and bread, and clothing, and a house for the sake of privacy.	21 L’indispensable pour vivre, c’est l’eau, le pain, le vêtement, et une maison pour s’abriter.
22 Better the life of the poor under a roof of planks, than lavish fare in somebody else's house.	22 Mieux vaut vivre comme un pauvre sous ses planches que manger comme un prince chez des étrangers.
23 Whether you have little or much, be content with it, and you wil not hear your household complaining.	23 Accommode-toi du peu ou du beaucoup que tu as: cela vaut mieux que d’entendre les reproches de quelqu’un qui t’héberge.
24 It is a miserable life, going from house to house; wherever you stay, you dare not open your mouth,	24 C’est une triste vie que d’aller de maison en maison; là où tu es, tu n’oses ouvrir la bouche.
25 you do not belong, you receive no thanks for the drink you pour out and hear embittering words intothe bargain:	25 Tu as beau être celui qui donne à manger et à boire, tu entends les paroles amères d’un ingrat:
26 'Come along, stranger, lay the table, what have you got ready? give me something to eat!'	26 “Viens ici, l’étranger, prépare la table; si tu as quelque chose, donne-moi à manger!”
27 'Go away, stranger, make room for someone important; my brother is coming to stay, I need thehouse.'	27 Ou encore: “Va-t’en, l’étranger, c’était inattendu! Mon frère vient en visite et j’ai besoin de la maison!”
28 It is hard for the reasonable to be begrudged hospitality to be shamed like a debtor.	28 Quand on se respecte, c’est dur de s’entendre reprocher l’hospitalité et d’être traité comme un débiteur.
