Sirach 22

1 An idler is like a stone covered in filth, everyone whistles at his disgrace.	1 Con sassi lordati è lapidato il pigro, e tutti parleranno di lui con disprezzo.
2 An idler is like a lump of dung, anyone picking it up shakes it off his hand.	2 Il pigro è lapidato collo sterco di bue: tutti quelli che lo toccheranno scoteranno le mani.
3 It is a disgrace to have fathered a badly brought-up son, but the birth of any daughter is a loss;	3 Il figlio maleducato è la vergogna del padre, ma la figlia ne sarà l'umiliazione.
4 a sensible daughter wil find a husband, but a shameless one is a grief to her father.	4 La fanciulla prudente è un'eredità pel suo marito, ma quella che fa arrossire è il disonore del genitore.
5 A brazen daughter puts father and mother to shame, and wil be disowned by both.	5 La figlia sfacciata copre di confusione il padre e il marito, non la cederà agli empi, e sarà vilipesa dall'uno e dall'altro.
6 An untimely remonstrance is like music at a funeral, but a thrashing and correction are wisdom at altimes.	6 Come musica tra il lutto è il racconto inopportuno, ma la frusta e l'istruzione son sapienza in ogni tempo.

9 Teaching a fool is like gluing bits of pottery together -- you are rousing someone who is besotted withsleep.	9 Parla con uno che dorme chi spiega allo stolto la sapienza, e quello alla fine del discorso dirà: « Che c'è? ».
10 You might as wel talk to someone sound asleep; when you have finished the fool will say, 'What'sup?'	10 Piangi sopra un morto, perchè si è spenta la sua luce; piangi sopra lo stolto, perchè gli manca il giudizio.
11 Shed tears for the dead, who has left the light behind; shed tears for the fool, who has left his witsbehind. Shed quieter tears for the dead who is at rest, for the fool life is worse than death.	11 Piangi poco sul morto, perchè è nel riposo;
12 Mourning for the dead lasts seven days, for the foolish and ungodly al the days of their lives.	12 ma la pessima vita dell'empio stolto è peggiore della morte.
13 Do not waste many words on the stupid, do not go near a dolt. Beware of him, or you wil have troubleand be soiled by contact with him; keep away from him, and you will have peace of mind and not be exasperatedby his fol y.	13 Il lutto per un morto dura sette giorni, ma per lo stolto e per l'empio tutto il tempo della loro vita.
14 What is heavier than lead, and what is its name if not 'fool'?	14 Coll'imprudente non parlare molto, e non andare insieme col l'insensato.
15 Sand and salt and a lump of iron are a lighter burden than a dolt.	15 Guardati da lui per non aver molestie, e non sarai contaminato dal suo peccato.
16 A tie-beam bonded into a building will not be dislodged by an earthquake; so too, a heart resolvedafter due reflection will not flinch at the critical moment.	16 Allontanati da lui ed avrai pace, e non sarai infastidito dalla sua stoltezza.
17 A heart founded on intel igent reflection is like a stucco decoration on a smooth wall.	17 Qual cosa è più pesante del piombo? E qual nome può avere se non quello di stolto?
18 Pebbles placed on top of a wal wil not stand up to the wind; no more can the heart of a fool frightenedat his own thoughts stand up to fear.	18 E' più facile sopportare la rena, il sale, una massa di ferro, che l'imprudente, lo stolto, l'empio.
19 Prick an eye and you wil draw a tear, prick a heart and you reveal its feelings.	19 Travi collegate tra loro e col fondamento dell'edifizio non si scompaginano, così un cuore reso forte da bene ispirato consiglio.
20 Throw stones at birds and you scare them away, reproach a friend and you destroy a friendship.	20 Le risoluzioni dell'uomo prudente non saranno mai alterate dal timore.
21 If you have drawn your sword on a friend, do not despair; there is a way back.	21 Come i pali sulle alture e i muri a secco non resistono all'urto dei venti,
22 If you have opened your mouth against your friend, do not worry; there is hope for reconciliation; butinsult, arrogance, betrayal of secrets, and the stab in the back -- in these cases any friend is lost.	22 così il cuore timido a causa dei pensieri dello stolto non resisterà all'impeto del timore.
23 Win your neighbour's confidence when he is poor, so that you may enjoy his later good fortune withhim; stand by him in times of trouble, in order to have your share when he comes into a legacy.	23 Come il cuore, fatto pauroso dai pensieri dello stolto, non sempre teme, così colui che sta saldo nei comandamenti di Dio è sempre senza timore.
24 Fire is heralded by the reek of the furnace and smoke, so too, bloodshed by insults.	24 Chi punge l'occhio ne fa sgorgare le lacrime, chi punge il cuore ne trae fuori i sentimenti.
25 I shal not be ashamed to shelter a friend nor shal I hide away from him,	25 Chi tira sassi agli uccelli li fa scappare, così chi insulta l'amico rompe l'amicizia.
26 and if evil comes to me through him, everyone who hears about it will beware of him.	26 Anche se tu avessi tirata fuori la spada contro l'amico non disperare, perchè puoi tornare indietro;
27 Who wil set a guard on my mouth, and an efficient seal on my lips, to keep me from fal ing, and mytongue from causing my ruin?	27 se avrai dette all'amico parole amare, non temere, c'è la riconciliazione, se non c'è stato oltraggio, improperio, superbia, rivelazione di segreti e colpo di tradimento; in tutti questi casi l'amico fuggirà.
	28 Serba fede all'amico nella sua povertà, se vuoi godere nella sua prosperità.
	29 Rimani a lui fedele nel tempo della sventura, per aver parte alla sua eredità.
	30 Avanti il fuoco, nella fornace, s'innalza il vapore e il fumo del fuoco, così le maledizioni, le contumelie e le minacce precedono il sangue.
	31 Non mi vergognerò di salutare l'amico, non ne sfuggirò l'incontro; se da lui mi viene del male, lo sopporterò; 5
	32 ma chiunque lo verrà a sapere si guarderà da lui.
	33 Chi metterà una guardia alla mia bocca, un sigillo inviolabile sopra le mie labbra, affinchè io non cada per loro colpa, e la mia lingua non sia la mia perdizione?
