1 There is the rebuke that is untimely, and there is the person who keeps quiet, and he is the shrewd one.	1 Quanto è meglio il riprendere, e non proibir di parlare a chi con fessa (la colpa), che il nudrir l'ira!
2 But how much better to rebuke than to fume!	2 Un impudico eunuco disonora una verginella:
3 The person who acknowledges a fault wards off punishment.	3 Cosi taluno iniquamente viola la giustizia.
4 Like a eunuch trying to take a girl's virginity is someone who tries to impose justice by force.	4 Quanto buona cosa ell' è nella correzione dimostrar pentimento! perocchè così tu fuggirai il peccato volontario.
5 There is the person who keeps quiet and is considered wise, another incurs hatred for talking too much.	5 V'ha chi saggio dimostrasi col tacere: ed havvi chi è odioso per la intemperanza del parlare.
6 There is the person who keeps quiet, not knowing how to answer, another keeps quiet, knowing whento speak.	6 Uno si tace, perché non ha senno per parlare; e uno si tace, perché sa qual'è il tempo approposito.
7 The wise wil keep quiet til the right moment, but a garrulous fool wil always misjudge it.	7 L'uomo saggio tacerà fino a un dato tempo; ma l'uomo vano, e l'imprudente non badano al tempo.
8 Someone who talks too much wil earn dislike, and someone who usurps authority wil earn hatred.	8 Chi molto parla, farà danno all'anima propria, e chi si arroga ingiusto potere, sarà odiato.
9 There is the person who finds misfortune a boon, and the piece of luck that turns to loss.	9 La prosperità è un male per l'uomo scorretto: e i tesori trovati gli diveutan dannosi.
10 There is the gift that affords you no profit, and the gift that repays you double.	10 Tal dono v'ha, che è inutile; e ve n'ha tale, che ha doppia mercede.
11 There is the honour that leads to humiliation, and there are people in a low state who raise theirheads.	11 Taluno nell'esaltazione trova l'abbassamento; e a un altro l'umiliazione giova per innalzarsi.
12 There is the person who buys much for little, yet pays for it seven times over.	12 Taluno compera molte cose a vii prezzo; ma poi gli tocca a pagarne il settuplo.
13 The wise wins love with words, while fools may shower favours in vain.	13 Il saggio si rende amabile con sue parole, ma le grazie degli stolti sono gettate.
14 The gift of the stupid wil bring you no advantage, his eyes look for seven times as much in return.	14 Il dono dello stolte non sarà utile a te; perocché egli ha sette occhi:
15 He gives little and reviles much, he opens his mouth like the town crier, he lends today and demandspayment tomorrow; he is a detestable fellow.	15 Ei darà poco, e molti farà rimproveri, e aperta la bocca, getterà fuoco.
16 The fool will say, 'I have no friends, I get no gratitude for my good deeds;	16 Egli è uno, che oggi da in prestito, e ridimanda domane: un tal uomo è odioso.
17 those who eat my bread have malicious tongues.' How often he wil be laughed at, and by how many!	17 Lo stolto non avrà un amico, e i suoi doni non saranno graditi:
18 Better a slip on the pavement than a slip of the tongue; this is how ruin takes the wicked by surprise.	18 Conciossiachè quelli, che mangiano il pane di lui sono falsi di lingua: e quanti, e quanto spesso si burleranno di lui?
19 A coarse-grained person is like an indiscreet story endlessly retold by the ignorant.	19 Perché egli senza giudizio dona o quello, che dovea serbare, e quello ancora, che non doveva serbare.
20 A maxim is rejected when coming from a fool, since the fool does not utter it on the apt occasion.	20 Le cadute della lingua fallace, sono come di chi cade dal tetto; così repentina sarà la caduta dei cattivi.
21 There is a person who is prevented from sinning by poverty; no qualms of conscience disturb thatperson's rest.	21 L'uomo sgraziato è come una favola senza sugo di quelle, che van sempre per le bocche di gente mal allevata.
22 There is a person who courts destruction out of false shame, courts destruction for the sake of a fool'sopinion.	22 La parabola non ha grazia in bocca dello stolto, perché egli la dice fuori di tempo.
23 There is a person who out of false shame makes promises to a friend, and so makes an enemy fornothing.	23 V'ha chi non pecca, perché non ne ha il modo, e si cruccia di stare nell'inazione.
24 Lying is an ugly blot on anyone, and ever on the lips of the undisciplined.	24 V'ha chi manda in rovina l'anima propria per uman rispetto, e la rovina in grazia di un imprudente, e per riguardo ad un tal uomo si perde.
25 A thief is preferable to an inveterate liar, but both are heading for ruin.	25 V'ha chi per uman rispetto promette all'amico, e il guadagno, che ne ha, è di farselo gratuitamente nimico.
26 Lying is an abominable habit, the liar's disgrace lasts for ever.	26 Pessimo vitupero dell'uomo ella è la bugia, ma questa sta di continuo nella bocca dei male allevati.
27 The wise gains advancement by words, the shrewd wins favour from the great.	27 E men cattivo il ladro, che il mentitore perpetuo: tua e l'uno, e l'altro avranno in retaggio la perdizione.
28 Whoever til s the soil wil have a full harvest, whoever wins favour from the great wil secure pardon foroffences.	28 I costumi de' mentitori sono disonorati, e si sta sempre con essi la loro ignominia.
29 Presents and gifts blind the eyes of the wise and stifle rebukes like a muzzle on the mouth.	29 Il saggio col suo parlare si accredita, e l'uom prudente sarà accetto ai magnati.
30 Wisdom concealed, and treasure undiscovered, what use is either of these?	30 Chi coltiva la sua terra, farà più alto cumulo di grasce: e chi fa opere di giustizia sarà esaltato; e chi è accetto ai magnati, fuggirà l'iniquità.
31 Better one who conceals his fol y than one who conceals his wisdom.	31 I regali, è i donativi accecano gli animi de' giudici, e rattengono le loro riprensioni, facendoli come mutoli.
	32 La sapienza, che si tiene occulta, e il tesoro, che non si vede, a che giovano l'una, e l'altro?
	33 E più da stimarsi chi nasconde la sua stoltezza, che chi tiene occulto il suo sapere.
