NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 There is the rebuke that is untimely, and there is the person who keeps quiet, and he is the shrewd one.	1 Hay reprensiones que son inoportunas, y hay silencios que revelan al hombre prudente.
2 But how much better to rebuke than to fume!	2 Más vale reprender que guardarse el enojo,
3 The person who acknowledges a fault wards off punishment.	3 y el que confiesa su falta se libra de la desgracia.
4 Like a eunuch trying to take a girl's virginity is someone who tries to impose justice by force.	4 Como un castrado que ansía desflorar a una joven, así es el que quiere hacer justicia por la fuerza.
5 There is the person who keeps quiet and is considered wise, another incurs hatred for talking too much.	5 Uno se calla, y es tenido por sabio, y otro se hace odioso por su locuacidad.
6 There is the person who keeps quiet, not knowing how to answer, another keeps quiet, knowing whento speak.	6 Uno se calla porque no tiene qué responder y otro, porque espera la oportunidad.
7 The wise wil keep quiet til the right moment, but a garrulous fool wil always misjudge it.	7 El sabio guarda silencio hasta el momento oportuno, pero el petulante y necio no se fija en el tiempo.
8 Someone who talks too much wil earn dislike, and someone who usurps authority wil earn hatred.	8 El que habla demasiado se vuelve abominable y el que pretende imponerse se hace odioso.
9 There is the person who finds misfortune a boon, and the piece of luck that turns to loss.	9 A veces se saca provecho de la adversidad, y oras veces, la suerte acaba en desgracia.
10 There is the gift that affords you no profit, and the gift that repays you double.	10 Hay regalos que no te dan provecho, y hay otros, que reditúan el doble.
11 There is the honour that leads to humiliation, and there are people in a low state who raise theirheads.	11 Hay desgracias que provienen de los honores, y hay gente humilde que pudo levantar cabeza.
12 There is the person who buys much for little, yet pays for it seven times over.	12 Hay quien compra mucho a bajo precio, y después lo paga siete veces más.
13 The wise wins love with words, while fools may shower favours in vain.	13 El sabio se hace amar por sus palabras, pero los cumplidos del necio caen en el vacío.
14 The gift of the stupid wil bring you no advantage, his eyes look for seven times as much in return.	14 El regalo del insensato no te aprovechará, porque él espera que le devuelvan mucho más:
15 He gives little and reviles much, he opens his mouth like the town crier, he lends today and demandspayment tomorrow; he is a detestable fellow.	15 de poco y echa en cara mucho, abre la boca como un pregonero, presta hoy y mañana exige. ¡Qué detestable es un hombre así!
16 The fool will say, 'I have no friends, I get no gratitude for my good deeds;	16 El necio dice: «No tengo ni un amigo; nadie agradece mis beneficios;
17 those who eat my bread have malicious tongues.' How often he wil be laughed at, and by how many!	17 los que comen mi pan tienen la lengua olvidadiza». ¡Cuántos y cuántas veces se reirán de él!
18 Better a slip on the pavement than a slip of the tongue; this is how ruin takes the wicked by surprise.	18 Más vale resbalar en el piso que con la lengua; así es como de repente caen los malvados.
19 A coarse-grained person is like an indiscreet story endlessly retold by the ignorant.	19 Un hombre grosero es como un cuento inoportuno, que siempre está en boca de los mal educados.
20 A maxim is rejected when coming from a fool, since the fool does not utter it on the apt occasion.	20 Nadie aprueba el proverbio dicho por un necio, porque nunca lo dice en el momento oportuno.
21 There is a person who is prevented from sinning by poverty; no qualms of conscience disturb thatperson's rest.	21 A algunos la indigencia los preserva del pecado y, cuando descansan, no sienten remordimientos.
22 There is a person who courts destruction out of false shame, courts destruction for the sake of a fool'sopinion.	22 Hay quien se pierde por timidez, y se pierde por temor a un insensato.
23 There is a person who out of false shame makes promises to a friend, and so makes an enemy fornothing.	23 Hay quien por timidez hace promesas a un amigo y se gana un enemigo inútilmente.
24 Lying is an ugly blot on anyone, and ever on the lips of the undisciplined.	24 La mentira es para el hombre una mancha infamante: siempre está en boca de los ignorantes.
25 A thief is preferable to an inveterate liar, but both are heading for ruin.	25 Es preferible un ladrón a un mentiroso inveterado, aunque uno y otro heredarán la perdición.
26 Lying is an abominable habit, the liar's disgrace lasts for ever.	26 El que se acostumbra a mentir cae en la deshonra y su ignominia lo acompaña constantemente.
27 The wise gains advancement by words, the shrewd wins favour from the great.	27 El sabio se abre camino con sus palabras y el hombre prudente agrada a los poderosos.
28 Whoever til s the soil wil have a full harvest, whoever wins favour from the great wil secure pardon foroffences.	28 El que cultiva la tierra levanta bien alto su parva, y el que agrada a los grandes se hace perdonar la injusticia.
29 Presents and gifts blind the eyes of the wise and stifle rebukes like a muzzle on the mouth.	29 Dones y regalos ciegan a los sabios y son como un bozal que acalla las críticas.
30 Wisdom concealed, and treasure undiscovered, what use is either of these?	30 Sabiduría escondida y tesoro oculto: ¿de qué sirven una cosa y la otra?
31 Better one who conceals his fol y than one who conceals his wisdom.	31 Es preferible el hombre que disimula su necedad al que oculta su sabiduría.
