Sirach 11

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Wisdom enables the poor to stand erect, and gives to the poor a place with the great.	1 La sapienza dell'umile lo innalzerà e lo farà sedere tra i grandi.
2 Do not praise anyone for good looks, nor dislike anyone for mere appearance.	2 Non lodare un uomo per la sua bellezza, e non disprezzare una persona per il suo aspetto.
3 Smal among winged creatures is the bee but her produce is the sweetest of the sweet.	3 Piccola cosa tra i volatili è l'ape, eppure il suo frutto ha il primato della dolcezza.
4 Do not grow proud when people honour you; for the works of the Lord are wonderful but hidden fromhuman beings.	4 Non ti gloriar mai del tuo vestito, non t'insuperbire quando sarai onorato; perchè soltanto le opere dell'Altissimo son maravigliose, le opere di lui son gloriose, nascoste, invisibili.
5 Many monarchs have been made to sit on the ground, and the person nobody thought of has worn thecrown.	5 Sederono sul trono molti tiranni, e portò il diadema colui al quale nessuno pensava.
6 Many influential people have been utterly disgraced, and prominent people have fal en into the power ofothers.	6 Molti potenti sono stati profondamente umiliati, e chi era nella gloria fu dato in altrui potere.
7 Do not find fault before making thorough enquiry; first reflect, then give a reprimand.	7 Non biasimare avanti d'esserti informato, quando ti sarai informato riprenderai con giustizia.
8 Listen before you answer, and do not interrupt a speech before it is finished.	8 Non rispondere prima d'aver ascoltato, e non interrompere l'altrui discorso.
9 Do not wrangle about something that does not concern you, do not interfere in the quarrels of sinners.	9 Non contendere per cosa che non ti molesta, e non ti mettere a giudicar coi peccatori.
10 My child, do not take on a great amount of business; if you multiply your interests, you are bound to suffer for it; hurry as fast as you can, yet you wil never arrive, nor wil you escape by running away.	10 Figlio, non t'impicciare in molte cose: se diverrai ricco, non sarai immune da colpa; se andrai dietro (a molte) non ne porterai in fondo (una), ed anche fuggendo, non ti trarrai d'impaccio.
11 Some people work very hard at top speed, only to find themselves fal ing further behind.	11 C'è chi fatica, s'affretta e patisce, e, essendo empio, tanto meno arricchisce.
12 Or there is the slow kind of person, needing help, poor in possessions and rich in poverty; and theLord turns a favourable eye on him, lifts him out of his wretched condition,	12 C'è invece un disgraziato bisognoso d'aiuto, privo d'ogni forza e ricco di miseria;
13 and enables him to hold his head high, thus causing general astonishment.	13 ma l'occhio di Dio lo guarda benignamente, lo solleva dalla sua umile condizione, gli fa alzare la testa, e molti ne restano ammirati e glorificano Dio.
14 Good and bad, life and death, poverty and wealth, al come from the Lord.	14 I beni e i mali, la vita e la morte, la povertà e la ricchezza vengono da Dio.
15	15 La sapienza, la disciplina e la scienza della legge son da Dio, son da lui l'amore e le vie del bene.
16	16 L'errore e le tenebre sono ingenite nei peccatori, e chi esulta nel male invecchia nella malizia.
17 To the devout the Lord's gift remains constant, and his favour will be there to lead them for ever.	17 Il dono di Dio rimane ai giusti, e il suo progresso avrà dei successi in eterno.
18 Others grow rich by pinching and scraping, and here is the reward they receive for it:	18 C'è chi arricchisce a forza di risparmi, ed ecco la parte che gli tocca in ricompensa:
19 although they say, 'Now I can sit back and enjoy the benefit of what I have got,' they do not know howlong this wil last; they will have to leave their goods to others and die.	19 che può dire: « Ho trovato riposo, ed ora mi godrò da solo i miei beni »
20 Stick to your job, work hard at it and grow old at your work.	20 e non sa quanto tempo debba passare avanti che s'avvicini la morte, quando morrà lasciando tutto agli altri.
21 Do not admire the achievements of sinners, trust the Lord and mind your own business; since it is atrifle in the eyes of the Lord, in a moment, suddenly to make the poor rich.	21 Stai al tuo patto, di esso ragiona, e invecchia nell'adempimento di quanto t'è comandato.
22 The blessing of the Lord is the reward of the devout, in a moment God brings his blessing to flower.	22 Non rimanere stupito dell'agire dei peccatori, ma confida in Dio e rimani al tuo posto;
23 Do not say, 'What are my needs, how much shal I have in the future?'	23 perché è facile davanti a Dio arricchire in un momento il povero.
24 And do not say, 'I am self-sufficient, what disaster can affect me now?'	24 La benedizione di Dio s'affretta a ricompensare il giusto, e in breve ora fa fruttificare i suoi progressi.
25 In prosperous times, disasters are forgotten and in times of disaster, no one remembers prosperity.	25 Non dire: « Di che ho bisogno? E quali beni potrò avere da qui in avanti? »
26 Yet it is a trifle for the Lord on the day someone dies to repay him as his conduct deserves.	26 Non dire: « Io basto a me stesso; e qual disgrazia ormai mi potrà, accadere? »
27 A moment's adversity, and pleasures are forgotten; in a person's last hour his deeds wil standrevealed.	27 Nel giorno della felicità non ti dimenticare della sventura, e nel giorno della sventura non ti dimenticare della felicità.
28 Cal no one fortunate before his death; it is by his end that someone wil be known.	28 E' cosa facile a Dio, nel giorno della morte, rendere a ciascuno secondo la sua condotta.
29 Do not bring everyone home with you, for many are the traps of the crafty.	29 Il male d'un'ora fa dimenticare i grandi piaceri, e alla fine dell'uomo le sue opere saranno svelate.
30 Like a captive partridge in a cage, so is the heart of the proud: like a spy he watches for your downfal ,	30 Non lodar nessuno avanti la sua morte, perchè l'uomo si conosce dai suoi figlioli.
31 ever on the look-out, turning good into bad and finding fault with what is praiseworthy.	31 Non menare in casa tua ogni sorta di persone, perchè son molte le insidie dell'ingannatore.
32 A hearthful of glowing coals starts from a single spark, and the sinner lurks for the chance to spilblood.	32 Come lo stomaco guasto rutta fetidi odori, come la pernice è attirata nella gabbia e il daino nel laccio, così fa il cuore del superbo, e come chi spia per vedere la caduta del prossimo.
33 Beware of a scoundrel and his evil contrivances, in case he puts a smear on you for ever.	33 Infatti, convertendo il bene in male, tende insidie, e alle doti migliori apporrà delle macchie.
34 Give a home to a stranger and he wil start trouble and estrange you from your own family.	34 Da una sola scintilla divamperà l'incendio, da un solo ingannatore saran moltiplicate le stragi; e l'uomo perverso attenta alla vita.
	35 Guardati dal corruttore, che ordisce guai, affinchè non abbia a tirarti addosso eterno scherno.
	36 Metti in casa uno straniero, ed egli ti metterà sottosopra e in tempesta, e ti alienerà dai tuoi.
