Sirach 11

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA MARTINI
1 Wisdom enables the poor to stand erect, and gives to the poor a place with the great.	1 La saggezza dell'umile lo innalzerà, e farallo sedere nel consesso de' magnati.
2 Do not praise anyone for good looks, nor dislike anyone for mere appearance.	2 Non lodare un uomo per la sua avvenenza, e non disprezzare alcuno per quel, che di lui apparisce:
3 Smal among winged creatures is the bee but her produce is the sweetest of the sweet.	3 Piccola cosa trai volatili è l'ape, ma il suo frutto ogni dolcezza sorpassa.
4 Do not grow proud when people honour you; for the works of the Lord are wonderful but hidden fromhuman beings.	4 Non ti gloriare delle vestimenta, e non ti invanire quando sarai innalzato agli onori; perocché solo dell'Altissimo son mirabili le opere; e le opere di lui sono gloriose, e segrete, e non conosciute.
5 Many monarchs have been made to sit on the ground, and the person nobody thought of has worn thecrown.	5 Sederono in trono molti tiranni: e tal portò il diadema, a cui nissuno pensava.
6 Many influential people have been utterly disgraced, and prominent people have fal en into the power ofothers.	6 Molti potenti caddero in grande oppressione; e i magnati furon dati in potere altrui.
7 Do not find fault before making thorough enquiry; first reflect, then give a reprimand.	7 Non biasimare nissuno prima di informarti; e quando sarai informato, riprenderai con giustizia.
8 Listen before you answer, and do not interrupt a speech before it is finished.	8 Non risponder parola prima di aver sentito; e non interrompere l'altrui discorso.
9 Do not wrangle about something that does not concern you, do not interfere in the quarrels of sinners.	9 Non contendere per cosa, che nulla a te importa; e non unirti a giudicare con quei, che peccano.
10 My child, do not take on a great amount of business; if you multiply your interests, you are bound to suffer for it; hurry as fast as you can, yet you wil never arrive, nor wil you escape by running away.	10 Figliuolo non impicciarti in molte cose; perocché se diverai ricco, non sarai esente da colpa. E andando dietro (a molte cose) non verrai a capo di alcuna; e qualunque diligenza tu facci, non potrai trarti fuora.
11 Some people work very hard at top speed, only to find themselves fal ing further behind.	11 Taluno si affanna, e si da da fare, e patisce, essendo privo di pietà, e tanto meno arricchisce:
12 Or there is the slow kind of person, needing help, poor in possessions and rich in poverty; and theLord turns a favourable eye on him, lifts him out of his wretched condition,	12 Tal altro è languido, e bisognoso di ajuto, e privo di forze, e ricco di miseria:
13 and enables him to hold his head high, thus causing general astonishment.	13 E l'occhio di Dio mira costui benignamente, e lo solleva dal suo abbattimento, e gli fa alzare la testa, e molti ne restano ammirati, e a Dio ne rendono onore.
14 Good and bad, life and death, poverty and wealth, al come from the Lord.	14 I beni, e i mali, la vita, e la morte, la povertà, e la ricchezza vengon da Dio.
15	15 La sapienza, e la disciplina, e la scienza della legge sono da Dio: la carità, e le opere de' buoni sono da lui.
16	16 L'errore, e le tenebre sono ingenite ai peccatori: e quelli, che esultano nel male, invecchiano nella malizia.
17 To the devout the Lord's gift remains constant, and his favour will be there to lead them for ever.	17 Il dono di Dio rimane presso de' giusti, e con vantaggiosi progressi anderà crescendo continuamente.
18 Others grow rich by pinching and scraping, and here is the reward they receive for it:	18 Taluno si fa ricco colla parsimonia, e questo sol frutto ha per sua mercede,
19 although they say, 'Now I can sit back and enjoy the benefit of what I have got,' they do not know howlong this wil last; they will have to leave their goods to others and die.	19 Che dice: Io son contento, e adesso mangerò de' miei beni io solo.
20 Stick to your job, work hard at it and grow old at your work.	20 Ma egli non sa quanto tempo vi sia, perché la morte si accosti, ed egli lasci ad altri ogni cosa, e si muoja.
21 Do not admire the achievements of sinners, trust the Lord and mind your own business; since it is atrifle in the eyes of the Lord, in a moment, suddenly to make the poor rich.	21 Tienti costante al tuo patto, e sopra di questo ragiona, e invecchia nell'adempiere quel, che ti è comandato.
22 The blessing of the Lord is the reward of the devout, in a moment God brings his blessing to flower.	22 Non ti abbagli il fare de' peccatori; ma confida in Dio, e sta al tuo posto;
23 Do not say, 'What are my needs, how much shal I have in the future?'	23 Perocché è cosa facile dinanzi a Dio l'arricchire il povero in un momento.
24 And do not say, 'I am self-sufficient, what disaster can affect me now?'	24 La benedizione di Dio corre a rimunerare il giusto, e in brev'ora fa, che egli cresca, e fruttifichi.
25 In prosperous times, disasters are forgotten and in times of disaster, no one remembers prosperity.	25 Non dire: Che ho io da fare? e qual bene omai avrò io?
26 Yet it is a trifle for the Lord on the day someone dies to repay him as his conduct deserves.	26 Non dire: io basto a me stesso: e qual male può mai venirmi?
27 A moment's adversity, and pleasures are forgotten; in a person's last hour his deeds wil standrevealed.	27 Nel dì felice non ti scordare de' cattivi giorni, e nel giorno cattivo non ti scordare del giorno felice:
28 Cal no one fortunate before his death; it is by his end that someone wil be known.	28 Ed è cosa facile a Dio il rendere a ciascheduno secondo le opere sue nel dì della morte.
29 Do not bring everyone home with you, for many are the traps of the crafty.	29 Il male di un'ora fa dimenticare le grandi delizie; perché nella fine dell'uomo si manifestano le sue operazioni.
30 Like a captive partridge in a cage, so is the heart of the proud: like a spy he watches for your downfal ,	30 Non lodar verun uomo prima della sua morte; perocché l'uomo si riconosce da' suoi figliuoli.
31 ever on the look-out, turning good into bad and finding fault with what is praiseworthy.	31 Non introdurre in casa tua ogni sorta di persone; perocché molte sono le insidie degli ingannatori;
32 A hearthful of glowing coals starts from a single spark, and the sinner lurks for the chance to spilblood.	32 Perocché come uno stomaco fetido getta dei rutti, e come la pernice è condotta alla gabbia, e il daino al laccio, cosi va la cosa riguardo al cuor del superbo, che osserva come da una vedetta la caduta del suo prossimo.
33 Beware of a scoundrel and his evil contrivances, in case he puts a smear on you for ever.	33 Perocché egli il bene convertendo in male sta tendendo insidie, e agli eletti stessi apporrà delle macchie.
34 Give a home to a stranger and he wil start trouble and estrange you from your own family.	34 Da una sola scintilla divampa il fuoco: e un solo ingannatore moltiplica le stragi; perché l'uom peccatore tende a spargere il sangue.
	35 Guardati dall'uomo malizioso macchinatore di guai, affinchè egli non abbia a tirarti addosso infamia per petua.
	36 Ricevi in tua casa lo straniero, ed egli la metterà sottosopra, e ti rovinerà, e ti spoglierà anche del tuo.
