Sirach 11

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Wisdom enables the poor to stand erect, and gives to the poor a place with the great.	1 La sabiduría del humilde le hace erguir la frente, y lo hace sentar en medio de los poderosos.
2 Do not praise anyone for good looks, nor dislike anyone for mere appearance.	2 No alabes a un hombre por su buena presencia ni desprecies a nadie por su aspecto.
3 Smal among winged creatures is the bee but her produce is the sweetest of the sweet.	3 La abeja es pequeña entre los animales que vuelan, pero lo que produce es más dulce que todo.
4 Do not grow proud when people honour you; for the works of the Lord are wonderful but hidden fromhuman beings.	4 No te gloríes de la ropa que te cubre ni te enorgullezcas en los días de gloria, porque las obras del Señor son admirables y están ocultas a los ojos de los hombres.
5 Many monarchs have been made to sit on the ground, and the person nobody thought of has worn thecrown.	5 Muchos tiranos se sentaron en el suelo y el que menos lo pensaba se ciñó la diadema.
6 Many influential people have been utterly disgraced, and prominent people have fal en into the power ofothers.	6 Muchos potentados se hundieron en el deshonor y hombres ilustres cayeron en manos de otros.
7 Do not find fault before making thorough enquiry; first reflect, then give a reprimand.	7 No censures antes de averiguar: reflexiona primero, y luego reprocha.
8 Listen before you answer, and do not interrupt a speech before it is finished.	8 No respondas antes de escuchar y no interrumpas cuando otro habla.
9 Do not wrangle about something that does not concern you, do not interfere in the quarrels of sinners.	9 No discutas sobre lo que no te corresponde ni te entrometas en las disputas de los pecadores.
10 My child, do not take on a great amount of business; if you multiply your interests, you are bound to suffer for it; hurry as fast as you can, yet you wil never arrive, nor wil you escape by running away.	10 Hijo mío, no pretendas hacer demasiadas cosas: si lo haces, no quedarás libre de culpa. Si pretendes demasiado, no lo alcanzarás y aunque quieras huir, no escaparás.
11 Some people work very hard at top speed, only to find themselves fal ing further behind.	11 Hay quien se esfuerza, se fatiga y se apura, y tanto más desprovisto se ve.
12 Or there is the slow kind of person, needing help, poor in possessions and rich in poverty; and theLord turns a favourable eye on him, lifts him out of his wretched condition,	12 Otro es débil, necesitado de ayuda, falto de fuerza y lleno de privaciones; pero el Señor lo mira con bondad y lo levanta de su humillación;
13 and enables him to hold his head high, thus causing general astonishment.	13 el Señor le hace erguir la frente y muchos quedan maravillados a causa de él.
14 Good and bad, life and death, poverty and wealth, al come from the Lord.	14 Bienes y males, vida y muerte, pobreza y riqueza vienen del Señor.
15	15 [La sabiduría, la ciencia y el conocimiento de la Ley vienen del Señor; el amor y el camino de las buenas obras proceden de él.]
16	16 [La necedad y la oscuridad han sido creadas para los pecadores; los que se complacen en el mal envejecen en él.]
17 To the devout the Lord's gift remains constant, and his favour will be there to lead them for ever.	17 el don del Señor permanece con los buenos y su benevolencia les asegura el éxito para siempre.
18 Others grow rich by pinching and scraping, and here is the reward they receive for it:	18 Un hombre se enriquece a fuerza de empeño y ahorro, ¿y qué recompensa le toca?
19 although they say, 'Now I can sit back and enjoy the benefit of what I have got,' they do not know howlong this wil last; they will have to leave their goods to others and die.	19 Cuando dice: Ya puedo descansar, ahora voy a disfrutar de mis bienes», él no sabe cuánto tiempo pasará hasta que muera y deje sus bienes a otros.
20 Stick to your job, work hard at it and grow old at your work.	20 Sé fiel a tu obligación, entrégate a ella, y envejece en tu oficio.
21 Do not admire the achievements of sinners, trust the Lord and mind your own business; since it is atrifle in the eyes of the Lord, in a moment, suddenly to make the poor rich.	21 No admires las obras del pecador: confía en el Señor y persevera en tu trabajo, porque es cosa fácil a los ojos del Señor enriquecer de un solo golpe al indigente.
22 The blessing of the Lord is the reward of the devout, in a moment God brings his blessing to flower.	22 La bendición del Señor es la recompensa de los buenos, y en un instante él hace florecer su bendición.
23 Do not say, 'What are my needs, how much shal I have in the future?'	23 No digas: «¿Qué me hace falta? ¿Qué bienes puedo esperar todavía?».
24 And do not say, 'I am self-sufficient, what disaster can affect me now?'	24 No digas: «Ya tengo bastante; ¿qué males pueden sobrevenirme aún?».
25 In prosperous times, disasters are forgotten and in times of disaster, no one remembers prosperity.	25 En los días buenos se olvidan los malos, y en los malos, se olvidan los buenos.
26 Yet it is a trifle for the Lord on the day someone dies to repay him as his conduct deserves.	26 Porque es fácil para el Señor, en el día de la muerte, retribuir a cada hombre según su conducta.
27 A moment's adversity, and pleasures are forgotten; in a person's last hour his deeds wil standrevealed.	27 Una hora de infortunio hace olvidar la dicha, y las obras de un hombre se revelan al fin de su vida.
28 Cal no one fortunate before his death; it is by his end that someone wil be known.	28 No proclames feliz a nadie antes que llegue su fin, porque sólo al final se conoce bien a un hombre.
29 Do not bring everyone home with you, for many are the traps of the crafty.	29 No hagas entrar a cualquiera en tu casa, porque el falso tiende muchas emboscadas.
30 Like a captive partridge in a cage, so is the heart of the proud: like a spy he watches for your downfal ,	30 El corazón del soberbio es como una carnada, igual que un espía, espera que des un mal paso.
31 ever on the look-out, turning good into bad and finding fault with what is praiseworthy.	31 Está al acecho para deformar el bien en mal y es capaz de manchar las cosas más limpias.
32 A hearthful of glowing coals starts from a single spark, and the sinner lurks for the chance to spilblood.	32 Una chispa enciende muchos carbones y el pecador tiende emboscadas sangrientas.
33 Beware of a scoundrel and his evil contrivances, in case he puts a smear on you for ever.	33 Cuídate del malhechor, porque él engendra maldades, no sea que te deje manchado para siempre.
34 Give a home to a stranger and he wil start trouble and estrange you from your own family.	34 Alberga a un extraño, y te traerá complicaciones, y hará de ti un extraño para tus propios parientes.
