Sirach 11

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Wisdom enables the poor to stand erect, and gives to the poor a place with the great.	1 Le pauvre, s'il est sage, tient la tête haute et s'assied parmi les grands.
2 Do not praise anyone for good looks, nor dislike anyone for mere appearance.	2 Ne félicite pas un homme pour sa prestance et ne prend personne en grippe d'après sonapparence.
3 Smal among winged creatures is the bee but her produce is the sweetest of the sweet.	3 L'abeille est petite parmi les êtres ailés, mais ce qu'elle produit est d'une douceur exquise.
4 Do not grow proud when people honour you; for the works of the Lord are wonderful but hidden fromhuman beings.	4 Ne t'enorgueillis pas lorsqu'on t'honore: car les oeuvres du Seigneur sont admirables, maiselles sont cachées aux hommes.
5 Many monarchs have been made to sit on the ground, and the person nobody thought of has worn thecrown.	5 Souvent des souverains ont été assis sur le pavé et un inconnu a reçu le diadème.
6 Many influential people have been utterly disgraced, and prominent people have fal en into the power ofothers.	6 Souvent des puissants ont été durement humiliés et des hommes illustres sont tombés aupouvoir d'autrui.
7 Do not find fault before making thorough enquiry; first reflect, then give a reprimand.	7 Ne blâme pas avant d'avoir examiné, réfléchis d'abord, puis exprime tes reproches.
8 Listen before you answer, and do not interrupt a speech before it is finished.	8 Ne réponds pas avant d'avoir écouté, n'interviens pas au milieu du discours.
9 Do not wrangle about something that does not concern you, do not interfere in the quarrels of sinners.	9 Ne t'échauffe pas pour une affaire qui ne te regarde pas et ne te mêle pas des querelles despécheurs.
10 My child, do not take on a great amount of business; if you multiply your interests, you are bound to suffer for it; hurry as fast as you can, yet you wil never arrive, nor wil you escape by running away.	10 Mon fils n'entreprends pas beaucoup d'affaires; si tu les multiplies, tu ne t'en tireras pasindemne; même en courant, tu n'arriveras pas et tu ne pourras échapper par la fuite.
11 Some people work very hard at top speed, only to find themselves fal ing further behind.	11 Il en est qui peinent, se fatiguent et se hâtent pour n'en être que mieux distancés.
12 Or there is the slow kind of person, needing help, poor in possessions and rich in poverty; and theLord turns a favourable eye on him, lifts him out of his wretched condition,	12 Il y a des faibles qui réclament de l'aide, pauvres de biens et riches de dénuement; leSeigneur les regarde avec faveur, il les relève de leur misère.
13 and enables him to hold his head high, thus causing general astonishment.	13 Il leur fait relever la tête et beaucoup s'en étonnent.
14 Good and bad, life and death, poverty and wealth, al come from the Lord.	14 Bien et mal, vie et mort, pauvreté et richesse, tout vient du Seigneur.

17 To the devout the Lord's gift remains constant, and his favour will be there to lead them for ever.	17 Le don du Seigneur reste fidèle aux hommes pieux et sa bienveillance les conduira àjamais.
18 Others grow rich by pinching and scraping, and here is the reward they receive for it:	18 Il y a des gens qui s'enrichissent à force d'avarice, voici quelle sera leur récompense:
19 although they say, 'Now I can sit back and enjoy the benefit of what I have got,' they do not know howlong this wil last; they will have to leave their goods to others and die.	19 Le jour où ils se disent: "J'ai trouvé le repos, maintenant je peux vivre sur mes biens", ilsne savent pas combien de temps cela durera: il leur faudra laisser cela à d'autres et mourir.
20 Stick to your job, work hard at it and grow old at your work.	20 Sois attaché à ta besogne, occupe-t'en bien et vieillis dans ton travail.
21 Do not admire the achievements of sinners, trust the Lord and mind your own business; since it is atrifle in the eyes of the Lord, in a moment, suddenly to make the poor rich.	21 N'admire pas les oeuvres du pécheur, confie-toi dans le Seigneur et tiens-toi à ta besogne.Car c'est chose facile aux yeux du Seigneur, rapidement, en un instant, d'enrichir un pauvre.
22 The blessing of the Lord is the reward of the devout, in a moment God brings his blessing to flower.	22 La bénédiction du Seigneur est la récompense de l'homme pieux, en un instant Dieu faitfleurir sa bénédiction.
23 Do not say, 'What are my needs, how much shal I have in the future?'	23 Ne dis pas: "De quoi ai-je besoin? Désormais quel sera mon avoir?"
24 And do not say, 'I am self-sufficient, what disaster can affect me now?'	24 Ne dis pas: "J'ai suffisamment, quelle malchance pourrait m'atteindre?"
25 In prosperous times, disasters are forgotten and in times of disaster, no one remembers prosperity.	25 Au jour du bonheur on ne se souvient pas des maux et au jour du malheur on oublie lebonheur.
26 Yet it is a trifle for the Lord on the day someone dies to repay him as his conduct deserves.	26 C'est qu'il est aisé au Seigneur, au jour de la mort, de rendre à chacun selon ses actes.
27 A moment's adversity, and pleasures are forgotten; in a person's last hour his deeds wil standrevealed.	27 Une heure d'épreuve fait oublier le bien-être et c'est à sa dernière heure que les oeuvresd'un homme sont dévoilées.
28 Cal no one fortunate before his death; it is by his end that someone wil be known.	28 Ne vante le bonheur de personne avant la fin, car c'est dans sa fin qu'on se fait connaître.
29 Do not bring everyone home with you, for many are the traps of the crafty.	29 N'introduis pas chez toi n'importe qui, car nombreuses sont les ruses de l'intrigant.
30 Like a captive partridge in a cage, so is the heart of the proud: like a spy he watches for your downfal ,	30 Comme une perdrix captive dans sa cage, ainsi le coeur de l'orgueilleux, comme l'espion ilattend ta ruine.
31 ever on the look-out, turning good into bad and finding fault with what is praiseworthy.	31 Changeant le bien en mal, il est à l'affût, aux meilleures qualités il trouve des tares.
32 A hearthful of glowing coals starts from a single spark, and the sinner lurks for the chance to spilblood.	32 Une étincelle allume un grand brasier, le pécheur est à l'affût pour faire couler le sang.
33 Beware of a scoundrel and his evil contrivances, in case he puts a smear on you for ever.	33 Prends garde au méchant car il complote le mal, crains qu'il ne t'inflige une flétrissureéternelle.
34 Give a home to a stranger and he wil start trouble and estrange you from your own family.	34 Introduis l'étranger, il mettra le trouble chez toi et il t'aliénera ta maisonnée.
