Sirach 11

NEW JERUSALEM	KÁLDI-NEOVULGÁTA
1 Wisdom enables the poor to stand erect, and gives to the poor a place with the great.	1 Az alantas fejét felemeli bölcsessége, és főemberek között juttat neki helyet.
2 Do not praise anyone for good looks, nor dislike anyone for mere appearance.	2 Ne dicsérd meg senki fiát szépsége miatt, és meg ne vess senkit sem külsejéért!
3 Smal among winged creatures is the bee but her produce is the sweetest of the sweet.	3 Jelentéktelen a méh a repdesők között, de igen kiváló édesség a terméke.
4 Do not grow proud when people honour you; for the works of the Lord are wonderful but hidden fromhuman beings.	4 Soha se dicsekedj öltözeteddel, és ne bízd el magad megtiszteltetésed napján, mert csak a Magasságbeli művei csodásak, s az ő tettei a dicsők, rejtettek és a láthatatlanok.
5 Many monarchs have been made to sit on the ground, and the person nobody thought of has worn thecrown.	5 Sokan jutottak alacsony sorból a trónra, s akire ügyet sem vetettek, feltette a koronát.
6 Many influential people have been utterly disgraced, and prominent people have fal en into the power ofothers.	6 Sok magasrangút nyomtak el nagyon, és sok dicsőséges került mások kezébe.
7 Do not find fault before making thorough enquiry; first reflect, then give a reprimand.	7 Ne kárhoztass senkit, mielőtt utána nem jártál, miután érdeklődtél, korholj igazság szerint.
8 Listen before you answer, and do not interrupt a speech before it is finished.	8 Ne adj választ, mielőtt meg nem hallgattál, és más beszéde alatt ne szólj közbe.
9 Do not wrangle about something that does not concern you, do not interfere in the quarrels of sinners.	9 Ha a dolog nem illet téged, ne pereskedj, és ne állj oda a bűnösök perénél.
10 My child, do not take on a great amount of business; if you multiply your interests, you are bound to suffer for it; hurry as fast as you can, yet you wil never arrive, nor wil you escape by running away.	10 Fiam! Ne szaporítsd dolgaidat, mert ha így gazdagodsz, nem maradsz vétek nélkül! Ha törtetsz is utána, mégsem éred el, ha jársz is utána, mit sem találsz.
11 Some people work very hard at top speed, only to find themselves fal ing further behind.	11 Van gonosz, aki fárad, siet és töri magát, de annál kevésbé bővelkedik.
12 Or there is the slow kind of person, needing help, poor in possessions and rich in poverty; and theLord turns a favourable eye on him, lifts him out of his wretched condition,	12 Van olyan, aki lankad és segítségre szorul, igen szűkölködik erőben, és bővelkedik szegénységben,
13 and enables him to hold his head high, thus causing general astonishment.	13 de Isten szeme kegyesen tekint rá, és felemeli alacsony helyzetéből, felmagasztalja fejét, úgyhogy sokan elámulnak rajta, és dicsérik Istent.
14 Good and bad, life and death, poverty and wealth, al come from the Lord.	14 Jó- és balsors, élet és halál, szegénység és gazdagság Istentől vannak.
15	15 Bölcsesség, tudomány és törvénytudás Istennél van, őnála van a szeretet és a jók útjai.
16	16 Tévedés és sötétség a bűnösökkel jött a világra, s akik szeretik a rosszat, meg is vénülnek a rosszban.
17 To the devout the Lord's gift remains constant, and his favour will be there to lead them for ever.	17 Isten adománya megmarad az igazaknál, és vállalkozását mindvégig siker koronázza.
18 Others grow rich by pinching and scraping, and here is the reward they receive for it:	18 Van, aki takarékosság útján gazdagodik, és ez a jutalmának osztályrésze.
19 although they say, 'Now I can sit back and enjoy the benefit of what I have got,' they do not know howlong this wil last; they will have to leave their goods to others and die.	19 Amikor azt mondja: »Nyugalmat találtam magamnak, most pedig magam fogyasztom javaimat!«
20 Stick to your job, work hard at it and grow old at your work.	20 nem tudja, hogy az idő múlik, s a halál közeleg, másoknak hagy mindent, és meghal.
21 Do not admire the achievements of sinners, trust the Lord and mind your own business; since it is atrifle in the eyes of the Lord, in a moment, suddenly to make the poor rich.	21 Maradj hű szövetségedhez, és róla beszélj, parancsaid teljesítésében öregedj meg!
22 The blessing of the Lord is the reward of the devout, in a moment God brings his blessing to flower.	22 Ne tarts a bűnösök cselekedeteivel, bízzál Istenben, és maradj helyeden,
23 Do not say, 'What are my needs, how much shal I have in the future?'	23 mert könnyű Isten szemében a szegényt egy pillanat alatt gazdaggá tenni.
24 And do not say, 'I am self-sufficient, what disaster can affect me now?'	24 Isten áldása az igazat sietve jutalmazza, és haladása rövid óra alatt is gyümölcsöt terem.
25 In prosperous times, disasters are forgotten and in times of disaster, no one remembers prosperity.	25 Ne mondd: »Van-e egyéb kívánni valóm?« és: »Mi jó híján vagyok még?«
26 Yet it is a trifle for the Lord on the day someone dies to repay him as his conduct deserves.	26 Ne mondd: »Van nekem elég!« és: »Miféle baj érhetne ezután?«
27 A moment's adversity, and pleasures are forgotten; in a person's last hour his deeds wil standrevealed.	27 A jó napon ne feledkezz meg a rosszakról, és a rossz napon ne feledkezz meg a jókról!
28 Cal no one fortunate before his death; it is by his end that someone wil be known.	28 Mert könnyű Istennek, hogy kinek-kinek megfizessen útjai szerint a halála napján.
29 Do not bring everyone home with you, for many are the traps of the crafty.	29 A rossz óra elfeledteti a nagy élvezetet, s az ember élete végén lesznek cselekedetei nyilvánvalókká.
30 Like a captive partridge in a cage, so is the heart of the proud: like a spy he watches for your downfal ,	30 Halála előtt senkit se dicsérj, mert a végén lehet az embert megismerni.
31 ever on the look-out, turning good into bad and finding fault with what is praiseworthy.	31 Ne vezess be akárkit a házadba, mert sokfélék a ravasznak fondorlatai;
32 A hearthful of glowing coals starts from a single spark, and the sinner lurks for the chance to spilblood.	32 hisz amint a romló belek bűzt árasztanak, és mint a fogolymadarat a verembe csalják, a kőszáli kecskét pedig csapdába, éppúgy a dölyfösök szíve is, mint a kém, lesi társa elestét.
33 Beware of a scoundrel and his evil contrivances, in case he puts a smear on you for ever.	33 A jót rosszra csavarja el a besúgó, és hibát fog rá kedvelt emberekre.
34 Give a home to a stranger and he wil start trouble and estrange you from your own family.	34 Egyetlen szikrából nagy tűz támad, egy ármányos sok vért ont, mert a gonosz ember vér után leselkedik. Óvakodj a vészthozó embertől, mert gonoszat forral, hogy gúny tárgyává ne tegyen téged örök időre. Fogadj be idegent házadba, majd földhöz vág, mint a forgószél, és elidegenít téged a hozzád tartozóktól!
