NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Wisdom enables the poor to stand erect, and gives to the poor a place with the great.	1 Le pauvre, s’il est un sage, va la tête haute; il a sa place parmi les notables.
2 Do not praise anyone for good looks, nor dislike anyone for mere appearance.	2 Ne t’emballe pas pour quelqu’un parce qu’il se présente bien, ne prends personne en dégoût pour son seul aspect.
3 Smal among winged creatures is the bee but her produce is the sweetest of the sweet.	3 L’abeille est fort petite parmi la gent ailée, mais vient la première pour la douceur de son miel.
4 Do not grow proud when people honour you; for the works of the Lord are wonderful but hidden fromhuman beings.	4 Ne tire pas vanité de l’habit que tu portes, ne sois pas orgueilleux parce que les gens t’honorent; sais-tu ce que le Seigneur prépare sans qu’on le remarque?
5 Many monarchs have been made to sit on the ground, and the person nobody thought of has worn thecrown.	5 Bien des dictateurs ont été renversés, et la couronne est allée à celui qu’on n’attendait pas.
6 Many influential people have been utterly disgraced, and prominent people have fal en into the power ofothers.	6 Beaucoup qui étaient puissants ont tout perdu, des gens dont tout le monde parlait sont tombés aux mains d’un nouveau venu.
7 Do not find fault before making thorough enquiry; first reflect, then give a reprimand.	7 Ne reprends personne si tu n’es pas d’abord bien informé; commence par examiner le cas et tu feras ensuite des reproches.
8 Listen before you answer, and do not interrupt a speech before it is finished.	8 Ne réponds pas avant d’avoir écouté, n’interviens pas au beau milieu du discours.
9 Do not wrangle about something that does not concern you, do not interfere in the quarrels of sinners.	9 Ne te mêle pas de ce qui ne te regarde pas, ne prends pas parti dans les disputes entre pécheurs.
10 My child, do not take on a great amount of business; if you multiply your interests, you are bound to suffer for it; hurry as fast as you can, yet you wil never arrive, nor wil you escape by running away.	10 Mon enfant, n’entreprends pas trop de choses à la fois; si tu continues d’en rajouter, tu ne seras pas sans reproches; tu auras beau courir, tu n’y arriveras pas, et tu ne pourras pas davantage t’en dégager.
11 Some people work very hard at top speed, only to find themselves fal ing further behind.	11 Il y en a qui se fatiguent au travail, s’épuisent et se tourmentent, et ils se retrouvent plus pauvres qu’avant.
12 Or there is the slow kind of person, needing help, poor in possessions and rich in poverty; and theLord turns a favourable eye on him, lifts him out of his wretched condition,	12 D’autres sont faibles et vulnérables, sans ressources et manquant de tout, mais le Seigneur les regarde d’un œil favorable.
13 and enables him to hold his head high, thus causing general astonishment.	13 Il les tire de leur abaissement et leur fait redresser la tête, à tel point que beaucoup s’en étonnent.
14 Good and bad, life and death, poverty and wealth, al come from the Lord.	14 Prospérité et malheur, vie et mort, pauvreté et richesse, tout vient du Seigneur.

17 To the devout the Lord's gift remains constant, and his favour will be there to lead them for ever.	17 Les hommes droits peuvent compter sur la générosité du Seigneur, sa bienveillance les guidera en toute occasion.
18 Others grow rich by pinching and scraping, and here is the reward they receive for it:	18 Pense au sort d’un homme qui s’est enrichi à force de calculs et d’économies.
19 although they say, 'Now I can sit back and enjoy the benefit of what I have got,' they do not know howlong this wil last; they will have to leave their goods to others and die.	19 Peut-être se dit-il: “J’ai bien gagné mon repos, je peux vivre maintenant sur ce que j’ai acquis”. Mais il ne sait pas le temps qui lui reste, il mourra bien et laissera tout à d’autres.
20 Stick to your job, work hard at it and grow old at your work.	20 Sois fidèle à ton devoir, consacres-y ta vie et poursuis ton œuvre jusqu’en tes vieux jours.
21 Do not admire the achievements of sinners, trust the Lord and mind your own business; since it is atrifle in the eyes of the Lord, in a moment, suddenly to make the poor rich.	21 Ne te scandalise pas de la réussite des pécheurs; mets ta confiance dans le Seigneur et persévère dans ton labeur. C’est chose facile pour le Seigneur que de faire riche le pauvre en un instant.
22 The blessing of the Lord is the reward of the devout, in a moment God brings his blessing to flower.	22 La bénédiction du Seigneur vient récompenser l’homme droit; soudain, sans se faire annoncer, elle porte ses fruits.
23 Do not say, 'What are my needs, how much shal I have in the future?'	23 Ne dis pas: “De quoi est-ce que je manque, que pourrais-je avoir ou désirer de plus?”
24 And do not say, 'I am self-sufficient, what disaster can affect me now?'	24 Ne dis pas: “J’ai tout ce qu’il me faut, quel malheur à présent pourrait m’arriver?”
25 In prosperous times, disasters are forgotten and in times of disaster, no one remembers prosperity.	25 Dans les bons jours on oublie les mauvais, dans les mauvais jours on ne se souvient plus des bons.
26 Yet it is a trifle for the Lord on the day someone dies to repay him as his conduct deserves.	26 Même quand la fin est proche, il est facile pour le Seigneur de rendre à chacun selon sa conduite.
27 A moment's adversity, and pleasures are forgotten; in a person's last hour his deeds wil standrevealed.	27 L’heure de l’épreuve fait oublier tous les plaisirs, c’est quand se termine la vie d’un homme que ses actions prennent tout leur sens.
28 Cal no one fortunate before his death; it is by his end that someone wil be known.	28 Ne parle pas de vie comblée de bénédictions tant que la personne n’est pas morte: tu ne la connaîtras qu’à la fin.
29 Do not bring everyone home with you, for many are the traps of the crafty.	29 N’introduis pas n’importe qui dans ta maison, car les profiteurs adroits sont nombreux.
30 Like a captive partridge in a cage, so is the heart of the proud: like a spy he watches for your downfal ,	30 La pensée de l’orgueilleux est comme la perdrix encagée pour attirer le gibier: il t’observe et cherche tes points faibles;
31 ever on the look-out, turning good into bad and finding fault with what is praiseworthy.	31 il change le bien en mal, il pose ses pièges, il calomnie ce qu’il y a de meilleur.
32 A hearthful of glowing coals starts from a single spark, and the sinner lurks for the chance to spilblood.	32 L’étincelle fera flamber les charbons, le pécheur avec ses pièges fera couler le sang.
33 Beware of a scoundrel and his evil contrivances, in case he puts a smear on you for ever.	33 Méfie-toi du méchant car il complote le mal; il pourrait détruire ta réputation pour toujours.
34 Give a home to a stranger and he wil start trouble and estrange you from your own family.	34 Introduis un étranger dans ta maison, il te causera des problèmes; il te brouillera avec les gens de ta maison.
