Sirach 11

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Wisdom enables the poor to stand erect, and gives to the poor a place with the great.	1 la saviezza dell'umile ne solleverà il capo, e lo farà sedere in mezzo ai grandi. Non giudicare dalle apparenze nè con leggerezza.
2 Do not praise anyone for good looks, nor dislike anyone for mere appearance.	2 Non lodare uno per la sua bellezza, nè ributtar alcuno per il suo aspetto.
3 Smal among winged creatures is the bee but her produce is the sweetest of the sweet.	3 Piccola tra i volatili è l'ape, e il suo frutto ha il primato della dolcezza. Non ti gloriar mai delle vesti, e non t'esaltare nel giorno del tuo splendore. Perchè mirabili son le opere del solo Altissimo,
4 Do not grow proud when people honour you; for the works of the Lord are wonderful but hidden fromhuman beings.	4 gloriose e nascoste e invisibili le sue opere.
5 Many monarchs have been made to sit on the ground, and the person nobody thought of has worn thecrown.	5 Molti principi sederono In terra, e tale a cui niuno pensava portò il diadema.
6 Many influential people have been utterly disgraced, and prominent people have fal en into the power ofothers.	6 Molti potenti furono fortemente oppressi e uomini illustri furon dati in mano altrui.
7 Do not find fault before making thorough enquiry; first reflect, then give a reprimand.	7 Prima d'informarti non biasimar nessuno, e informatoti, rimprovera con giustizia.
8 Listen before you answer, and do not interrupt a speech before it is finished.	8 Prima d'aver ascoltato non risponder parole, e nel mezzo de' discorsi non t'intromettere a parlare.
9 Do not wrangle about something that does not concern you, do not interfere in the quarrels of sinners.	9 Per cosa che non ti dà noia, non leticare, e quando i peccatori tengon giudizio, non ti seder con [loro].
10 My child, do not take on a great amount of business; if you multiply your interests, you are bound to suffer for it; hurry as fast as you can, yet you wil never arrive, nor wil you escape by running away.	10 Figliuolo, non perder in molte cose la tua attività, perchè se sarai ricco [di cure] non andrai esente da colpa. Se invero terrai dietro [a troppe cose], non le raggiungerai, e, spintoti innanzi, non te ne trarrai più fuori.
11 Some people work very hard at top speed, only to find themselves fal ing further behind.	11 C'è ohi lavora e s'affretta e si travaglia da empio, e tanto più soffre penuria.
12 Or there is the slow kind of person, needing help, poor in possessions and rich in poverty; and theLord turns a favourable eye on him, lifts him out of his wretched condition,	12 E c'è chi è sfinito e bisognoso d'aiuto, mancante di forze e abbondante di miseria;
13 and enables him to hold his head high, thus causing general astonishment.	13 ma l'occhio dei Signore si posa su lui a [suo] bene, e lo solleva dalla sua umiliazione, e rialza il suo capo, e l'ammiran molti, e ne glorificano Iddio.
14 Good and bad, life and death, poverty and wealth, al come from the Lord.	14 Beni e mali, vita e morte, povertà e ricchezza vengon dal Signore.
15	15 La sapienza e l'istruzione e la scienza delle Leggi son presso Dio: la carità e la condotta de' buoni son presso di lui.
16	16 L'errore e le tenebre furon create insieme con i peccatori, e quel che si compiacciono del male, nel male invecchiano.
17 To the devout the Lord's gift remains constant, and his favour will be there to lead them for ever.	17 Il dono del Signore rimane ai giusti, e il suo favore li farà prosperare mal sempre.
18 Others grow rich by pinching and scraping, and here is the reward they receive for it:	18 C'è chi arricchisce a forza di [oculatezza e di] parsimonia, e la sua parte di guadagno è questa,
19 although they say, 'Now I can sit back and enjoy the benefit of what I have got,' they do not know howlong this wil last; they will have to leave their goods to others and die.	19 ch'egli può dire: « Ho trovato il riposo, e mangerò ora del mio da solo ».
20 Stick to your job, work hard at it and grow old at your work.	20 Ma non sa quanto tempo ci sia ancora perchè s'avvicini la morte, ed ei lasci tutto ad altri e muoia!
21 Do not admire the achievements of sinners, trust the Lord and mind your own business; since it is atrifle in the eyes of the Lord, in a moment, suddenly to make the poor rich.	21 sta fermo nel tuo patto [col Signore] e vivi conforme ad esso, e nella pratica de' tuoi doveri invecchia.
22 The blessing of the Lord is the reward of the devout, in a moment God brings his blessing to flower.	22 Non ti meravigliare degli affari de' peccatori; ma confida nel Signore e persevera nel tuo lavoro.
23 Do not say, 'What are my needs, how much shal I have in the future?'	23 Perchè è facile agli occhi di Dio arricchire il povero a un tratto.
24 And do not say, 'I am self-sufficient, what disaster can affect me now?'	24 La benedizione del Signore s'affretta a premiare il giusto, e in ora brev'ora fa fruttificare i suoi passi.
25 In prosperous times, disasters are forgotten and in times of disaster, no one remembers prosperity.	25 Non dire: «Che bisogno ho io? e qual bene potrò avere ormai? ».
26 Yet it is a trifle for the Lord on the day someone dies to repay him as his conduct deserves.	26 Non dire: « Ho abbastanza, e che può accedermi ormai di male? ».
27 A moment's adversity, and pleasures are forgotten; in a person's last hour his deeds wil standrevealed.	27 Nel giorno de' beni non ti scordar de' mali, e nel giorno de' mali non ti scordar de' beni.
28 Cal no one fortunate before his death; it is by his end that someone wil be known.	28 Perchè è facile al Signore, nel giorno della morte, rendere a ciascuno secondo i suoi portamenti.
29 Do not bring everyone home with you, for many are the traps of the crafty.	29 Il male d'un'ora fa dimenticare le più grandi delizie, e nella fine dell'uomo [s'ha] la rivelazione delle sue opere.
30 Like a captive partridge in a cage, so is the heart of the proud: like a spy he watches for your downfal ,	30 Prima della morte non proclamar felice nessun uomo, perchè ne' suoi figli si riconosce l'uomo.
31 ever on the look-out, turning good into bad and finding fault with what is praiseworthy.	31 Non introdurre chiunque in casa tua, perchè molte sono le insidie del fraudolento.
32 A hearthful of glowing coals starts from a single spark, and the sinner lurks for the chance to spilblood.	32 Come invero erutta lo stomaco de' fetidi, e come la pernice è attratta nella gabbia e la capra nel laccio, cosi [è], il cuore de' superbi, e a mo' d'un esploratore adocchia la caduta del suo prossimo.
33 Beware of a scoundrel and his evil contrivances, in case he puts a smear on you for ever.	33 Convertendo il bene in male, egli tende insidie, e alle cose più nobili imprime una macchia.
34 Give a home to a stranger and he wil start trouble and estrange you from your own family.	34 Da una sola scintilla divampa gran fuoco, e per l'opera d'un solo fraudolento s'accresce la strage: il peccatore sta in agguato del sangue.
	35 Guardati dal furfante, perché egli macchina il male; onde non abbia a riversar su te vituperio per sempre.
	36 Ricevi presso di te uno straniero, e ti soppianterà con le turbolenze, e straniero ti renderà ai tuoi stessi [di casa],
