NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
1 On my bed at night I sought the man who is my sweetheart: I sought but could not find him!1 In lectulo meo, per noctes,
quæsivi quem diligit anima mea :
quæsivi illum, et non inveni.
2 So I shal get up and go through the city; in the streets and in the squares, I shall seek my sweetheart. Isought but could not find him!2 Surgam, et circuibo civitatem :
per vicos et plateas
quæram quem diligit anima mea :
quæsivi illum, et non inveni.
3 I came upon the watchmen -- those who go on their rounds in the city: 'Have you seen my sweetheart?'3 Invenerunt me vigiles qui custodiunt civitatem :
Num quem diligit anima mea vidistis ?
4 Barely had I passed them when I found my sweetheart. I caught him, would not let him go, not til I hadbrought him to my mother's house, to the room where she conceived me!4 Paululum cum pertransissem eos,
inveni quem diligit anima mea :
tenui eum, nec dimittam,
donec introducam illum in domum matris meæ,
et in cubiculum genetricis meæ.
5 LOVER: I charge you, daughters of Jerusalem, by gazel es and wild does, do not rouse, do not wake mybeloved before she pleases.5 (Sponsus)Adjuro vos, filiæ Jerusalem,
per capreas cervosque camporum,
ne suscitetis, neque evigilare faciatis dilectam,
donec ipsa velit.
6 POET: What is this coming up from the desert like a column of smoke, breathing of myrrh andfrankincense and every exotic perfume?6 (Chorus)Quæ est ista quæ ascendit per desertum
sicut virgula fumi ex aromatibus myrrhæ,
et thuris, et universi pulveris pigmentarii ?
7 Here comes Solomon's litter. Around it are sixty champions, the flower of the warriors of Israel;7 En lectulum Salomonis sexaginta fortes ambiunt
ex fortissimis Israël,
8 al of them skil ed swordsmen, expert in war. Each man has his sword at his side, against alarms bynight.8 omnes tenentes gladios, et ad bella doctissimi :
uniuscujusque ensis super femur suum
propter timores nocturnos.
9 King Solomon has had a palanquin made of wood from Lebanon.9 Ferculum fecit sibi rex Salomon
de lignis Libani ;
10 He has had the posts made of silver, the canopy of gold, the seat of purple; the centre is inlaid withebony.10 columnas ejus fecit argenteas,
reclinatorium aureum, ascensum purpureum ;
media caritate constravit,
propter filias Jerusalem.
11 Daughters of Zion, come and see King Solomon, wearing the diadem with which his mother crownedhim on his wedding day, on the day of his heart's joy.11 Egredimini et videte, filiæ Sion,
regem Salomonem in diademate quo coronavit illum mater sua
in die desponsationis illius,
et in die lætitiæ cordis ejus.
