1 Who compares with the sage? Who else knows how to explain things? Wisdom lights up the face,enlivening a grim expression.	1 La sapienza dell'uomo risplende nella sua faccia, e il potentissimo gli cangerà il volto.
2 Obey the king's command and, because of the divine promise,	2 Io osservo i comandi del re e i precetti del giuramento di Dio.
3 be in no hurry to depart from it; do not be obstinate in a bad cause, since the king wil do as he likes inany case.	3 Non t'affrettare ad allontanarti dalla sua faccia e non persistere in azione cattiva, perchè Egli può fare tutto ciò che vuole,
4 Since the word of a king is sovereign, what is the point of saying, 'Why do that?'	4 e la sua parola è piena di potenza, e nessuno può dire a lui: « Perchè fai in questa maniera? »
5 One who obeys the command will come to no harm; the heart of the sage knows the right moment andverdict,	5 Chi osserva il precetto non proverà alcun male. Il cuore del sapiente conosce il tempo e la risposta.
6 for there is a right moment and verdict for everything; but misfortune lies heavy upon anyone	6 Per ogni cosa v'è il suo tempo e la sua opportunità; ma è di grande afflizione per l'uomo
7 who does not know what the outcome wil be, no one is going to say how things wil turn out.	7 l'ignorare il passato e non poter avere nessuna notizia dell'avvenire.
8 No one can control the wind and stop it from blowing, no one can control the day of death. From warthere is no escape, no more can wickedness save the person who commits it.	8 Non è in potere dell'uomo trattener lo spirito, non ha autorità sul giorno della morte, non gli è permesso di riposare in tempo di guerra, e l'empietà non salverà l'empio.
9 I have seen al this to be so, having careful y studied everything taking place under the sun, while oneperson tyrannises over another to the former's detriment.	9 Tutte queste cose ho io considerate, applicando la mia mente a tutte le opere che si fanno sotto il sole. Qualche volta un uomo domina sugli altri per sua sventura.
10 And again, I have observed the wicked carried to their graves, and people leaving the holy place and,once out in the city, forgetting how the wicked used to behave; how futile this is too!	10 Ho visti degli empi onorati di sepoltura, i quali, quando erauo ancora vivi, stavano nel luogo santo, ed eran lodati nella città come dediti ad opere sante. Ma anche questo è vanità.
11 Because the sentence on the evil-doer is not carried out on the instant, people's hearts are ful ofdesire to do wrong.	11 Perchè la sentenza non è data subito contro i cattivi, senza alcun timore i figli degli uomini commettono il male.
12 The sinner who does wrong a hundred times lives on. But this too I know, that there is good in store forpeople who fear God, because they fear him,	12 Ma dall'essere il peccatore tollerato con pazienza, anche dopo che ha fatto cento volte il male, io ho compreso che il bene sarà riserbato a quelli che temono Dio e lo riveriscono,
13 but there is no good in store for the wicked because he does not fear God, and so, like a shadow, hewil not prolong his days.	13 e che non avrà bene l'empio, che non saran prolungati i suoi giorni, ma passeranno come ombra quelli che non temono la faccia del Signore.
14 Another futile thing that happens on earth: upright people being treated as though they were wickedand wicked people being treated as though they were upright. To me this is one more example of futility.	14 V'è pure un'altra vanità che avviene sopra la terra: vi son dei giusti a cui toccano i mali, come se avessero operato da empi, e vi son degli empi tanto tranquilli, come se avessero operato da giusti; ma anche questo io la giudico vanissima cosa.
15 And therefore I praise joy, since human happiness lies only in eating and drinking and in takingpleasure; this comes from what someone achieves during the days of life that God gives under the sun.	15 Io dunque ho lodata l'allegria, perchè l'uomo non ha altro bene sotto il sole, se non mangiare e bere e star contento, e questo solo può ritrarre dalle sue fatiche nel tempo di vita a lui conceduta sotto il sole da Dio.
16 Having applied myself to acquiring wisdom and to observing the activity taking place in the world -- forday and night our eyes enjoy no rest-	16 Or io applicai la mia mente per imparar la sapienza e capire il gran da fare che domina la terra: vi son degli uomini che non chiudono gli occhi nè giorno nè notte per dormire.
17 I have scrutinised God's whole creation: you cannot get to the bottom of everything taking place underthe sun; you may wear yourself out in the search, but you wil never find it. Not even a sage can get to thebottom of it, even if he says that he has done so.	17 E compresi che di tutte le opere di Dio che si fanno sotto il sole, l'uomo non può trovare nessuna spiegazione, e quanto piu s'affanna a cercarla tanto meno la trova, e se anche il sapiente dicesse di sapere non potrà scoprir niente.
