1 Who compares with the sage? Who else knows how to explain things? Wisdom lights up the face,enlivening a grim expression.	1 La sapienza dell'uomo sulla faccia di lui risplende: e colui che può il tutto gli cangia il volto.
2 Obey the king's command and, because of the divine promise,	2 Io sto intento alle parole, e ai precetti del Re Iddio, confermati con giuramento.
3 be in no hurry to depart from it; do not be obstinate in a bad cause, since the king wil do as he likes inany case.	3 Non ti allontanar di leggeri dalla sua faccia, e non perseverare nella mala opera: perocché egli fa tutto quello che vuole:
4 Since the word of a king is sovereign, what is the point of saying, 'Why do that?'	4 E la sua parola è sommamente potente, e, nessuno può dire a lui: Perché fai tu così?
5 One who obeys the command will come to no harm; the heart of the sage knows the right moment andverdict,	5 Chi osserva i precetti non sentirà verun male: il cuore del saggio conosce il tempo, e la maniera di rispondere.
6 for there is a right moment and verdict for everything; but misfortune lies heavy upon anyone	6 Per ogni cosa v' ha il suo tempo opportuno: ma è di grande afflizione per l'uomo.
7 who does not know what the outcome wil be, no one is going to say how things wil turn out.	7 Il non sapere il passato, e il non potere aver novella del futuro.
8 No one can control the wind and stop it from blowing, no one can control the day of death. From warthere is no escape, no more can wickedness save the person who commits it.	8 Non è in petere dell'uomo il rattenere lo spirito, ne egli ha autorità sopra il giorno di sua morte, né gli è permesso di starsi in pace, venuta che èl a guerra; el'empietà non salverà l'empio.
9 I have seen al this to be so, having careful y studied everything taking place under the sun, while oneperson tyrannises over another to the former's detriment.	9 Io considerai tutte queste cose, e applicai il mio cuore a tutte le cose, che si fanno sotto del sole. Talora un uomo ha impero sopra un altro uomo per sua sciagura.
10 And again, I have observed the wicked carried to their graves, and people leaving the holy place and,once out in the city, forgetting how the wicked used to behave; how futile this is too!	10 Vidi degli empj portati alla sepoltura, i quali mentre tuttor viveano, stavano nel luogo santo, ed erano celebrati nella città, come persone date al bene: ma questo pure è vanità;
11 Because the sentence on the evil-doer is not carried out on the instant, people's hearts are ful ofdesire to do wrong.	11 Perocché a motivo, che non così subito è proferita la sentenza contro i cattivi, per questo i figliuoli degli uomini fanno il male senza paura.
12 The sinner who does wrong a hundred times lives on. But this too I know, that there is good in store forpeople who fear God, because they fear him,	12 Ma dall'essere tollerato con pazienza il peccatore quando cento volte ha peccato, io ho compreso, che saran felici quelli che temono Dio, e stanno con timore dinanzi a lui.
13 but there is no good in store for the wicked because he does not fear God, and so, like a shadow, hewil not prolong his days.	13 Non abbia bene l'empio, e non siano lunghi i suoi giorni, ma passino com'ombra quelli, che non temono la faccia del Signore.
14 Another futile thing that happens on earth: upright people being treated as though they were wickedand wicked people being treated as though they were upright. To me this is one more example of futility.	14 V'ha pure un'altra vanità, che avviene sopra la terra: Vi sono de' giusti, che soffrono calamità come se avessero operato da empi, e vi sono degli empj tanto tranquilli, come se avessero operato da giusti: ma questa pure io la credo cosa vanissima.
15 And therefore I praise joy, since human happiness lies only in eating and drinking and in takingpleasure; this comes from what someone achieves during the days of life that God gives under the sun.	15 Quindi io lodai il viver lieto, perché altro bene non abbia l'uomo sotto del sole, se non mangiare, e bere e questo solo egli ritragga dalle sue fatiche nel tempo, di vita conceduto a lui quaggiù da Dio.
16 Having applied myself to acquiring wisdom and to observing the activity taking place in the world -- forday and night our eyes enjoy no rest-	16 Or io applicai il mio cuore ad apprendere la sapienza, e ad osservare le distrazioni, che occupano la terra: V'ha taluno, che non chiude occhio per dormire né di giorno né di notte.
17 I have scrutinised God's whole creation: you cannot get to the bottom of everything taking place underthe sun; you may wear yourself out in the search, but you wil never find it. Not even a sage can get to thebottom of it, even if he says that he has done so.	17 E conobbi come di tutte le opere di Dio di quelle, che si fanno sotto del sole, nessun uomo trovar può la ragione; e quanto più si affatica in tal ricerca, tanto meno troverà: e quand'anche il saggio dicesse di saperla, non potrà rintracciarla.
