1 Who compares with the sage? Who else knows how to explain things? Wisdom lights up the face,enlivening a grim expression.	1 - La sapienza dell'uomo risplende sul suo voltoe trasfigura la durezza del suo viso.
2 Obey the king's command and, because of the divine promise,	2 Io [ti dico]: Bad[a] alla bocca del re, e ai comandi del giuramento di Dio.
3 be in no hurry to depart from it; do not be obstinate in a bad cause, since the king wil do as he likes inany case.	3 Non affrettarti a partir dal suo cospetto, non t'ostinar nell'azione malvagia; perchè tutto ciò che vuole egli la fa.
4 Since the word of a king is sovereign, what is the point of saying, 'Why do that?'	4 Potente è invero la parola del re, nè può dirgli alcuno: «Perchè fai tu così?».
5 One who obeys the command will come to no harm; the heart of the sage knows the right moment andverdict,	5 Chi osserva il comandamento, non proverà male alcuno: tempo e opportunità sa discernere il cuore del savio.
6 for there is a right moment and verdict for everything; but misfortune lies heavy upon anyone	6 C'è infatti per ogni cosa tempo e opportunità; ma grande miseria pesa sull'uomo,
7 who does not know what the outcome wil be, no one is going to say how things wil turn out.	7 perchè egli ignora quel che avverrà, e da nessuno non può aver notizia del futuro.
8 No one can control the wind and stop it from blowing, no one can control the day of death. From warthere is no escape, no more can wickedness save the person who commits it.	8 Non è in poter dell'uomo di rattener lo spirito, nè ha potere sul giorno della morte; non c'è riposo per lui mentre infuria la battaglia, nè la malvagità salverà il malvagio.
9 I have seen al this to be so, having careful y studied everything taking place under the sun, while oneperson tyrannises over another to the former's detriment.	9 Tutto questo io considerai, mentre applicavo l'animo mio a quanto si fa sotto il sole. C'è talora un uomo che domina sull'altro a suo proprio danno.
10 And again, I have observed the wicked carried to their graves, and people leaving the holy place and,once out in the city, forgetting how the wicked used to behave; how futile this is too!	10 Vidi gli empi onorati di sepoltura, che, ancor vivi, eran nel luogo santoe avevan fama in città come [persone] di giuste azioni. Anche questo è vanità!
11 Because the sentence on the evil-doer is not carried out on the instant, people's hearts are ful ofdesire to do wrong.	11 Poichè non subito si fa giustizia de' malvagi, perciò senza timore alcuno gli uomini commettono il male.
12 The sinner who does wrong a hundred times lives on. But this too I know, that there is good in store forpeople who fear God, because they fear him,	12 Ma se anche il peccatore faccia il male cento volte e sia tollerato con pazienza [per una lunga vita], io so che la felicità è per chi teme Iddio, per chi paventa al suo cospetto.
13 but there is no good in store for the wicked because he does not fear God, and so, like a shadow, hewil not prolong his days.	13 Non vi può esser felicità per l'empio, nè saran prolungati i suoi giorni; ma passeran come un'ombraquei che non temono il cospetto di Dio.
14 Another futile thing that happens on earth: upright people being treated as though they were wickedand wicked people being treated as though they were upright. To me this is one more example of futility.	14 C'è un'altra vanità che avviene sulla terra: ci son giusti cui toccan mali, come se avessero agito da empi, ed empi che se ne vivono così sicuri, come se avessero i meriti de' giusti. E anche questa ritengo vanità suprema!
15 And therefore I praise joy, since human happiness lies only in eating and drinking and in takingpleasure; this comes from what someone achieves during the days of life that God gives under the sun.	15 Lodai pertanto l'allegria, perchè non c'è altro bene per l'uomo sotto il sole, che mangiare e bere e godersela, e questo solo e' ricava dalla sua fatica, ne' giorni di sua vita che Dio gli ha dato sotto il sole.
16 Having applied myself to acquiring wisdom and to observing the activity taking place in the world -- forday and night our eyes enjoy no rest-	16 Applicai l'animo mio a imparar la sapienza, e a considerar l'affaccendarsi che avvien sulla terra: c'è chi nè giorno nè nottegusta sonno con i suoi occhi!
17 I have scrutinised God's whole creation: you cannot get to the bottom of everything taking place underthe sun; you may wear yourself out in the search, but you wil never find it. Not even a sage can get to thebottom of it, even if he says that he has done so.	17 E compresi come, [a proposito] di tutte le opere divine, nessuna ragione può trovar l'uomodi ciò che accade sotto il sole; e quanto più s'affatica a cercare, tanto meno trova. Anche se il sapiente dice di sapere, [in realtà] non potrà scoprire [nulla].
