Ecclesiastes/Qohelet 8

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Who compares with the sage? Who else knows how to explain things? Wisdom lights up the face,enlivening a grim expression.	1 Qui est comme le sage? Qui sait expliquer quelque chose? La sagesse de l'homme fait luire sonvisage et son air austère est changé.
2 Obey the king's command and, because of the divine promise,	2 Ecoute l'ordre du roi, et à cause du serment divin,
3 be in no hurry to depart from it; do not be obstinate in a bad cause, since the king wil do as he likes inany case.	3 ne te presse pas de t'en écarter; ne t'entête pas dans un mauvais cas, parce qu'il fait ce qui luiplaît.
4 Since the word of a king is sovereign, what is the point of saying, 'Why do that?'	4 Parce que la parole du roi est souveraine, qui lui dira: "Que fais-tu?"
5 One who obeys the command will come to no harm; the heart of the sage knows the right moment andverdict,	5 Celui qui garde le commandement ne connaît aucun malheur; le coeur du sage connaît le tempset le jugement,
6 for there is a right moment and verdict for everything; but misfortune lies heavy upon anyone	6 car il y a un temps et un jugement pour toute chose. Mais le malheur de l'homme est grave pourlui,
7 who does not know what the outcome wil be, no one is going to say how things wil turn out.	7 car il ne sait pas ce qui arrivera: qui pourrait lui annoncer comment ce sera?
8 No one can control the wind and stop it from blowing, no one can control the day of death. From warthere is no escape, no more can wickedness save the person who commits it.	8 Aucun homme n'est maître du vent pour retenir le vent, personne n'est maître du jour de la mort.Il n'y a pas de sursis à la guerre, et la méchanceté ne sauve pas celui qui la commet.
9 I have seen al this to be so, having careful y studied everything taking place under the sun, while oneperson tyrannises over another to the former's detriment.	9 Tout cela je l'ai vu, en mettant tout mon coeur à tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil, au temps oùl'homme est maître de l'homme, pour son malheur.
10 And again, I have observed the wicked carried to their graves, and people leaving the holy place and,once out in the city, forgetting how the wicked used to behave; how futile this is too!	10 Et ainsi j'ai vu des méchants emmenés à leur tombeau, et l'on s'en va du lieu saint, et l'on oubliedans la ville comment ils ont agi, cela aussi est vanité!
11 Because the sentence on the evil-doer is not carried out on the instant, people's hearts are ful ofdesire to do wrong.	11 Parce que la sentence contre celui qui fait le mal n'est pas vite exécutée, le coeur des enfantsdes hommes est plein de l'envie de mal faire.
12 The sinner who does wrong a hundred times lives on. But this too I know, that there is good in store forpeople who fear God, because they fear him,	12 Que le pécheur fasse cent fois le mal, il survit. Mais moi je sais aussi qu'il arrive du bien à ceuxqui craignent Dieu parce qu'ils le craignent,
13 but there is no good in store for the wicked because he does not fear God, and so, like a shadow, hewil not prolong his days.	13 mais qu'il n'arrive pas de bien au méchant et que, comme l'ombre, il ne prolongera pas sesjours, parce qu'il ne craint pas Dieu.
14 Another futile thing that happens on earth: upright people being treated as though they were wickedand wicked people being treated as though they were upright. To me this is one more example of futility.	14 Il y a une vanité qui se fait sur la terre: il y a des justes qui sont traités selon la conduite desméchants et des méchants qui sont traités selon la conduite des justes. Je dis que cela aussi est vanité.
15 And therefore I praise joy, since human happiness lies only in eating and drinking and in takingpleasure; this comes from what someone achieves during the days of life that God gives under the sun.	15 Et je fais l'éloge de la joie, car il n'y a de bonheur pour l'homme que dans le manger, le boire etle plaisir qu'il prend; c'est cela qui accompagne son travail aux jours de la vie que Dieu lui donne sous le soleil.
16 Having applied myself to acquiring wisdom and to observing the activity taking place in the world -- forday and night our eyes enjoy no rest-	16 Après avoir mis tout mon coeur à connaître la sagesse et à observer la tâche qu'on exerce sur laterre -- car ni jour ni nuit on ne voit de ses yeux le repos --
17 I have scrutinised God's whole creation: you cannot get to the bottom of everything taking place underthe sun; you may wear yourself out in the search, but you wil never find it. Not even a sage can get to thebottom of it, even if he says that he has done so.	17 j'ai observé toute l'oeuvre de Dieu: l'homme ne peut découvrir toute l'oeuvre qui se fait sous lesoleil; quoique l'homme se fatigue à chercher, il ne trouve pas. Et même si un sage dit qu'il sait, il ne peuttrouver.
