NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Who compares with the sage? Who else knows how to explain things? Wisdom lights up the face,enlivening a grim expression.	1 Quem é comparável ao sábio, que conhece a razão das coisas? A sabedoria de um homem ilumina-lhe o semblante e a severidade de seus traços é modificada por ela.
2 Obey the king's command and, because of the divine promise,	2 Observa a ordem do rei e, por causa do juramento feito a Deus,
3 be in no hurry to depart from it; do not be obstinate in a bad cause, since the king wil do as he likes inany case.	3 não te apresses a fugir de sua presença. Não te comprometas com um mau negócio, porque o rei faz tudo que lhe apraz.
4 Since the word of a king is sovereign, what is the point of saying, 'Why do that?'	4 Com efeito, sua palavra é soberana; e quem ousaria dizer-lhe: Que fazes tu?
5 One who obeys the command will come to no harm; the heart of the sage knows the right moment andverdict,	5 Aquele que observa o preceito não provará mal algum, e o coração de um sábio conhece o tempo e o julgamento.
6 for there is a right moment and verdict for everything; but misfortune lies heavy upon anyone	6 Porque para tudo há um tempo e um julgamento, e a desgraça pesa muito forte sobre o homem.
7 who does not know what the outcome wil be, no one is going to say how things wil turn out.	7 Ele não conhece o futuro; quem lhe poderia dizer como as coisas se passarão?
8 No one can control the wind and stop it from blowing, no one can control the day of death. From warthere is no escape, no more can wickedness save the person who commits it.	8 O homem não é senhor de seu sopro de vida, nem é capaz de o conservar. Ninguém tem poder sobre o dia de sua morte, nem faculdade de afastar esse combate; e o crime não pode salvar o criminoso.
9 I have seen al this to be so, having careful y studied everything taking place under the sun, while oneperson tyrannises over another to the former's detriment.	9 Eis o que eu vi, aplicando meu espírito a tudo que se faz debaixo do sol, quando um homem domina sobre outro homem para a desgraça deste último:
10 And again, I have observed the wicked carried to their graves, and people leaving the holy place and,once out in the city, forgetting how the wicked used to behave; how futile this is too!	10 vi ímpios receberem sepultura e gozarem de repouso, enquanto que aqueles que tinham feito o bem iam para longe do lugar santo e eram esquecidos na cidade. Isto é ainda vaidade.
11 Because the sentence on the evil-doer is not carried out on the instant, people's hearts are ful ofdesire to do wrong.	11 Porque a sentença contra os maus atos não é executada imediatamente, o coração dos homens se enche de desejo de fazer o mal;
12 The sinner who does wrong a hundred times lives on. But this too I know, that there is good in store forpeople who fear God, because they fear him,	12 porque o pecador culpado de cem crimes vê sua vida prolongada. Eu sei, no entanto, que a felicidade é para os que temem a Deus, que sua presença enche de respeito,
13 but there is no good in store for the wicked because he does not fear God, and so, like a shadow, hewil not prolong his days.	13 e que não haverá nenhuma felicidade para o ímpio, o qual, como a sombra, não prolongará sua vida, porque não tem temor a Deus.
14 Another futile thing that happens on earth: upright people being treated as though they were wickedand wicked people being treated as though they were upright. To me this is one more example of futility.	14 Há outra vaidade que aparece sobre a terra: há justos aos quais acontece o que conviria ao proceder de celerados; e há ímpios aos quais acontece o que conviria ao proceder de justos. Digo que isso é também vaidade.
15 And therefore I praise joy, since human happiness lies only in eating and drinking and in takingpleasure; this comes from what someone achieves during the days of life that God gives under the sun.	15 Por isso louvei a alegria, porque não há nada de melhor para o homem, debaixo do sol, do que comer, beber e se divertir; possa isto acompanhá-lo no seu trabalho, ao longo dos dias que Deus lhe outorgar debaixo do sol.
16 Having applied myself to acquiring wisdom and to observing the activity taking place in the world -- forday and night our eyes enjoy no rest-	16 Quando meu espírito se entregou ao estudo da sabedoria e à observação das coisas que se passam sobre a terra - porque nem de dia, nem de noite os olhos dos homens encontram repouso -,
17 I have scrutinised God's whole creation: you cannot get to the bottom of everything taking place underthe sun; you may wear yourself out in the search, but you wil never find it. Not even a sage can get to thebottom of it, even if he says that he has done so.	17 verifiquei, em toda a obra de Deus, que o homem nada pode descobrir do que se faz debaixo do sol. Ele se fatiga a investigar, mas não encontra, e se mesmo um sábio pensasse ter alcançado, isso não aconteceria.
