NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 [Psalm Of Asaph] My people, listen to my teaching, pay attention to what I say.	1 Poema de Asaf. Pueblo mío, escucha mi enseñanza, presta atención a las palabras de mi boca:
2 I will speak to you in poetry, unfold the mysteries of the past.	2 yo voy a recitar un poema, a revelar enigmas del pasado.
3 What we have heard and know, what our ancestors have told us	3 Lo que hemos oído y aprendido, lo que nos contaron nuestros padres,
4 we shal not conceal from their descendants, but wil tell to a generation stil to come: the praises ofYahweh, his power, the wonderful deeds he has done.	4 no queremos ocultarlo a nuestros hijos, lo narraremos a la próxima generación: son las glorias del Señor y su poder, las maravillas que él realizó.
5 He instituted a witness in Jacob, he established a law in Israel, he commanded our ancestors to handit down to their descendants,	5 El dio una norma a Jacob, estableció una ley en Israel, y ordenó a nuestros padres enseñar estas cosas a sus hijos.
6 that a generation stil to come might know it, children yet to be born. They should be sure to tel theirown children,	6 Así las aprenderán las generaciones futuras y los hijos que nacerán después; y podrán contarlas a sus propios hijos,
7 and should put their trust in God, never forgetting God's great deeds, always keeping his commands,	7 para que pongan su confianza en Dios, para que no se olviden de sus proezas y observen sus mandamientos.
8 and not, like their ancestors, be a stubborn and rebel ious generation, a generation weak of purpose,their spirit fickle towards God.	8 Así no serán como sus padres, una raza obstinada y rebelde, una raza de corazón inconstante y de espíritu infiel a Dios:
9 The archer sons of Ephraim turned tail when the time came for fighting;	9 como los arqueros de la tribu de Efraím, que retrocedieron en el momento del combate.
10 they failed to keep God's covenant, they refused to fol ow his Law;	10 Ellos no mantuvieron su alianza con Dios, se negaron a seguir su Ley;
11 they had forgotten his great deeds, the marvels he had shown them;	11 olvidaron sus proezas y las maravillas que les hizo ver,
12 he did marvels in the sight of their ancestors in Egypt, in the plains of Tanis.	12 cuando hizo prodigios a la vista de sus padres, en la tierra de Egipto, en los campos de Tanis:
13 He split the sea and brought them through, made the waters stand up like a dam;	13 abrió el Mar para darles paso y contuvo las aguas como un dique;
14 he led them with a cloud by day, and al the night with the light of a fire;	14 de día los guiaba con la nube y de noche, con el resplandor del fuego.
15 he split rocks in the desert, let them drink as though from the limitless depths;	15 Partió las rocas en el desierto y les dio de beber a raudales:
16 he brought forth streams from a rock, made waters flow down in torrents.	16 sacó manantiales del peñasco, hizo correr las aguas como ríos.
17 But they only sinned against him more than ever, defying the Most High in barren country;	17 Pero volvieron a pecar contra él y a rebelarse contra el Altísimo en el desierto:
18 they deliberately chal enged God by demanding food to their hearts' content.	18 tentaron a Dios en sus corazones, pidiendo comida a su antojo.
19 They insulted God by saying, 'Can God make a banquet in the desert?	19 Hablaron contra Dios, diciendo: «¿Acaso tiene Dios poder suficiente para preparar una mesa en el desierto?
20 True, when he struck the rock, waters gushed out and flowed in torrents; but what of bread? Can hegive that, can he provide meat for his people?'	20 Es verdad que cuando golpeó la roca, brotó el agua y desbordaron los torrentes; pero ¿podrá también darnos pan y abastecer de carne a su pueblo?».
21 When he heard them Yahweh vented his anger, fire blazed against Jacob, his anger mountedagainst Israel,	21 El Señor, al oírlos, se indignó, y un fuego se encendió contra Jacob; su enojo se alzó contra Israel,
22 because they had no faith in God, no trust in his power to save.	22 porque no creyeron en Dios ni confiaron en su auxilio.
23 Even so he gave orders to the skies above, he opened the sluice-gates of heaven;	23 Entonces mandó a las nubes en lo alto y abrió las compuertas del cielo:
24 he rained down manna to feed them, he gave them the wheat of heaven;	24 hizo llover sobre ellos el maná, les dio como alimento un trigo celestial;
25 mere mortals ate the bread of the Mighty, he sent them as much food as they could want.	25 todos comieron en pan de ángeles, les dio comida hasta saciarlos.
26 He roused an east wind in the heavens, despatched a south wind by his strength;	26 Hizo soplar desde el cielo el viento del este, atrajo con su poder el viento del sur;
27 he rained down meat on them like dust, birds thick as sand on the seashore,	27 hizo llover sobre ellos carne como polvo y pájaros como arena del mar:
28 tumbling into the middle of his camp, al around his dwel ing-place.	28 los dejó caer en medio del campamento, alrededor de sus carpas.
29 They ate as much food as they wanted, he satisfied al their cravings;	29 Ellos comieron y se hartaron, pues les dio lo que habían pedido;
30 but their cravings were still upon them, the food was stil in their mouths,	30 pero apenas saciaron su avidez, cuando aún estaban con la boca llena,
31 when the wrath of God attacked them, slaughtering their strongest men, laying low the flower ofIsrael.	31 la ira de Dios se desató contra ellos: hizo estragos entre los más fuertes y abatió a lo mejor de Israel.
32 Despite al this, they went on sinning, they put no faith in his marvels.	32 A pesar de todo, volvieron a pecar y no creyeron en sus maravillas;
33 He made their days vanish in mist, their years in sudden ruin.	33 por eso él acabó sus días como un soplo, y sus años en un solo instante.
34 Whenever he slaughtered them, they began to seek him, they turned back and looked eagerly forhim,	34 Cuando los hacía morir, lo buscaban y se volvían a él ansiosamente;
35 recalling that God was their rock, God the Most High, their redeemer.	35 recordaban que Dios era su Roca, y el Altísimo, su libertador.
36 They tried to hoodwink him with their mouths, their tongues were deceitful towards him;	36 Pero lo elogiaban de labios para afuera y mentían con sus lenguas;
37 their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.	37 su corazón no era sincero con él y no eran fieles a su alianza.
38 But in his compassion he forgave their guilt instead of kil ing them, time and again repressing hisanger instead of rousing his full wrath,	38 Pero él, que es compasivo, los perdonaba en lugar de exterminarlos; una y otra vez reprimió su enojo y no dio rienda suelta a su furor:
39 remembering they were creatures of flesh, a breath of wind that passes, never to return.	39 sabía que eran simples mortales, un soplo que pasa y ya no vuelve.
40 How often they defied him in the desert! How often they grieved him in the wastelands!	40 ¡Cuántas veces lo irritaron en el desierto y lo afligieron en medio de la soledad!
41 Repeatedly they chal enged God, provoking the Holy One of Israel,	41 Volvían a tentar a Dios y a exasperar al Santo de Israel,
42 not remembering his hand, the time when he saved them from the oppressor,	42 sin acordarse de lo que hizo su mano, cuando los rescató de la opresión.
43 he who did his signs in Egypt, his miracles in the plains of Tanis,	43 Porque él hizo portentos en Egipto y prodigios en los campos de Tanis;
44 turning their rivers to blood, their streams so that they had nothing to drink.	44 convirtió en sangre sus canales, y también sus ríos, para que no bebieran;
45 He sent horseflies to eat them up, and frogs to devastate them,	45 les mandó tábanos voraces y ranas que hacían estragos.
46 consigning their crops to the caterpil ar, the fruit of their hard work to the locust;	46 Entregó sus cosechas al pulgón y el fruto de sus trabajos a las langostas;
47 he kil ed their vines with hail, their sycamore trees with frost,	47 destruyó sus viñedos con el granizo y sus higueras con la helada;
48 delivering up their cattle to hail, and their flocks to thunderbolts.	48 desató la peste contra el ganado y la fiebre contra los rebaños.
49 He loosed against them the ful heat of his anger, fury, rage and destruction, a detachment ofdestroying angels;	49 Lanzó contra ellos el ardor de su enojo, su ira, su furor y su indignación –un tropel de mensajeros de desgracias–
50 he gave free course to his anger. He did not exempt their own selves from death, delivering up theirlives to the plague.	50 dando así libre curso a su furor; no los quiso librar de la muerte, hizo que la peste acabara con sus vidas.
51 He struck all the first-born in Egypt, the flower of the youth in the tents of Ham.	51 Hirió a los primogénitos de Egipto, a los hijos mayores de la tierra de Cam;
52 He brought out his people like sheep, guiding them like a flock in the desert,	52 sacó a su pueblo como a un rebaño, y los guió como a ovejas por el desierto:
53 leading them safe and unafraid, while the sea engulfed their enemies.	53 los condujo seguros y sin temor, mientras el Mar cubría a sus adversarios.
54 He brought them to his holy land, the hil -country won by his right hand;	54 Los llevó hasta su Tierra santa, hasta la Montaña que adquirió con su mano;
55 he dispossessed nations before them, measured out a heritage for each of them, and settled thetribes of Israel in their tents.	55 delante de ellos expulsó a las naciones, les asignó por sorteo una herencia e instaló en sus carpas a las tribus de Israel.
56 But stil they chal enged the Most High God and defied him, refusing to keep his decrees;	56 Pero ellos tentaron e irritaron a Dios, no observaron los preceptos del Altísimo;
57 as perverse and treacherous as their ancestors, they gave way like a faulty bow,	57 desertaron y fueron traidores como sus padres, se desviaron como un arco fallido.
58 provoking him with their high places, rousing his jealousy with their idols.	58 Lo afligieron con sus lugares de culto, le provocaron celos con sus ídolos:
59 God listened and vented his wrath, he totally rejected Israel;	59 Dios lo advirtió y se llenó de indignación, y rechazó duramente a Israel.
60 he forsook his dwelling in Shiloh, the tent where he used to dwel on the earth.	60 Abandonó la Morada de Silo, la Carpa donde habitaba entre los hombres;
61 He abandoned his power to captivity, his splendour to the enemy's clutches;	61 entregó su Fortaleza al cautiverio, su Arca gloriosa en manos del enemigo
62 he gave up his people to the sword, he vented his wrath on his own heritage.	62 Entregó su pueblo a la espada, se enfureció contra su herencia;
63 Fire devoured their young men, their young girls had no wedding-song;	63 el fuego devoró a sus jóvenes, y no hubo canto nupcial para sus vírgenes;
64 their priests fel by the sword and their widows sang no dirge.	64 sus sacerdotes cayeron bajo la espada, y sus viudas no pudieron celebrar el duelo.
65 The Lord arose as though he had been asleep, like a strong man fighting-mad with wine,	65 Pero el Señor se levantó como de un sueño, como un guerrero adormecido por el vino:
66 he struck his enemies on the rump, and put them to everlasting shame.	66 él hirió al enemigo con la espada, le infligió una derrota completa.
67 Rejecting the tents of Joseph, passing over the tribe of Ephraim,	67 Rechazó a los campamentos de José y no eligió a la tribu de Efraím:
68 he chose the tribe of Judah, his wel -loved mountain of Zion;	68 eligió a la tribu de Judá, a la montaña de Sión, su predilecta.
69 he built his sanctuary like high hil s, like the earth set it firm for ever.	69 Construyó su Santuario como el cielo en lo alto, como la tierra, que cimentó para siempre;
70 He chose David to be his servant, took him from the sheepfold,	70 y eligió a David, su servidor, sacándolo de entre los rebaños de ovejas.
71 took him from tending ewes to pasture his servant Jacob, and Israel his heritage.	71 Cuando iba detrás de las ovejas, lo llamó para que fuera pastor de Jacob, su pueblo, y de Israel, su herencia;
72 He pastured them with unblemished heart, with a sensitive hand he led them.	72 él los apacentó con integridad de corazón y los guió con la destreza de su mano.
