¹ So, Job, please listen to my words and attend to al I have to say.	¹ Ascolta, dunque, Giobbe, le mie parole, presta orecchio a tutti i miei detti!
² Now as I open my mouth, and my tongue shapes words against my palate,	² Ecco, apro la mia bocca, parla la mia lingua entro il mio palato.
³ I shal utter words of wisdom from the heart, my lips will speak in all sincerity.	³ Parlo con cuore sincero; le mie labbra diranno la pura verità.
⁴ God's was the spirit that made me, Shaddai's the breath that gave me life.	⁴ Lo spirito di Dio mi ha fatto, e il soffio dell'Onnipotente mi ha dato la vita.
⁵ Refute me, if you can. Prepare yourself, take up your position!	⁵ Se puoi, rispondimi; preparati pure a resistermi.
⁶ Look, I am your equal, not some god, like you I was moulded out of clay.	⁶ Ecco, io sono tuo eguale davanti a Dio; anch'io sono stato tratto dal fango.
⁷ No fear of me, therefore, need affright you, my hand wil not lie heavy over you.	⁷ Così non avrai timore di me, né graverà su di te la mia autorità.
⁸ How could you say in my hearing -- for the sound of your words did not escape me-	⁸ Tu hai ben detto alle mie orecchie, e ho udito il suono delle tue parole:
⁹ 'I am clean, and sinless, I am pure, without fault.	⁹ "Puro sono io, senza peccato, sono innocente, non ho colpa!
¹⁰ But he keeps inventing excuses against me and regards me as his enemy.	¹⁰ Eppure Dio trova pretesti contro di me, e mi considera come suo nemico;
¹¹ He puts me in the stocks, he watches my every path'?	¹¹ pone in ceppi i miei piedi e scruta tutti i miei passi".
¹² In saying so, I tel you, you are wrong: for God is greater than any human being.	¹² Ebbene, in questo non hai ragione, io ti rispondo, perché Dio è più grande dell'uomo.
¹³ Why then quarrel with him for not replying to you, word for word?	¹³ Perché gli hai intentato un processo, dato che non risponde ad ogni tua parola?
¹⁴ God speaks first in one way, and then in another, although we do not realise it.	¹⁴ Dio sa parlare in un modo o in un altro e nessuno fa attenzione:
¹⁵ In dreams and in night-visions, when slumber has settled on humanity and people are asleep in bed,	¹⁵ nel sogno, in una visione notturna, quando il torpore piomba sugli uomini, addormentati nel loro giaciglio.
¹⁶ he speaks in someone's ear, frightens him with apparitions	¹⁶ Allora egli apre l'orecchio degli uomini e vi sigilla gli avvertimenti che rivolge loro,
¹⁷ to turn him from what he is doing and to put an end to his pride.	¹⁷ per distogliere l'uomo dalle sue cattive azioni e preservare il mortale dall'orgoglio,
¹⁸ And thus he preserves his soul from the abyss, his life from passing down the Canal.	¹⁸ per impedirgli di cadere nella fossa e di passare il canale.
¹⁹ Or again, he corrects by the sufferings of the sick-bed, when someone's bones tremble continuously	¹⁹ Lo corregge pure sul suo letto con il dolore e con l'incessante tortura delle sue ossa,
²⁰ and the thought of food revolts him, however tasty it is,	²⁰ quando ha nausea del cibo e gli ripugna la vivanda delicata;
²¹ and his flesh rots away while you watch it and the bones beneath begin to show,	²¹ quando la sua carne si consuma a vista d'occhio e le ossa, che non si vedevano prima, spuntano fuori.
²² and his soul is drawing nearer to the abyss and his life to the dwel ing of the dead.	²² Allora la sua esistenza si avvicina alla fossa e la sua vita agli sterminatori.
²³ Then, if there is an Angel near him, a Mediator, one in a thousand, to remind him where his duty lies,	²³ Se c'è con lui un angelo, un solo intercessore tra mille, per annunciare all'uomo il suo dovere,
²⁴ to take pity on him and to say, 'Spare him from going down to the abyss: I have found the ransom forhis life,'	²⁴ che abbia compassione di lui e dica: "Preservalo dallo scendere nella fossa; ho trovato per lui il riscatto!".
²⁵ his flesh wil recover its childhood freshness, he wil return to the days of his youth.	²⁵ Allora la sua carne sarà più florida che in gioventù, tornerà ai giorni della sua adolescenza;
²⁶ He wil pray to God who has restored him to favour, and wil come into his presence with joy. He wiltel others how he has received saving justice	²⁶ invocherà Dio che gli sarà propizio, gridando di gioia vedrà la sua faccia; canterà agli uomini la propria salvezza.
²⁷ and sing this hymn before his companions, 'I sinned and left the path of right, but God has notpunished me as my sin deserved.	²⁷ Rivolgendosi agli uomini dirà: "Ho peccato e violato la giustizia, ma Dio non si è comportato con me come meritavo.
²⁸ He has spared my soul from going down to the abyss and is making my life see the light.'	²⁸ Mi ha scampato dalla fossa e la mia vita contempla la luce".
²⁹ All this is what God keeps doing again and yet again for human beings,	²⁹ Ecco, Dio fa tutto questo, due volte, tre volte con l'uomo,
³⁰ to snatch souls back from the abyss and to make the light of the living stil shine.	³⁰ per sottrarlo vivo dalla fossa e illuminarlo con la luce dei viventi.
³¹ Pay attention, Job, listen to me: keep quiet, I have more to say.	³¹ Giobbe, sta' attento, ascoltami, sta' in silenzio e io parlerò.
³² If you have anything to say, refute me, speak out, for I would gladly accept that you are upright.	³² Se hai qualcosa da dire, rispondimi; parla, perché vorrei darti ragione.
³³ If not, then listen to me: keep quiet, and I wil teach you wisdom.	³³ Se non ne hai, ascoltami; taci, e io ti insegnerò la sapienza".
