1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	1 E il Signore parlò a Mosè e disse:
2 'Tel the Israelites to turn back and pitch camp in front of Pi-Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea,facing Baal-Zephon. You must pitch your camp opposite this place, beside the sea,	2 Di' ai figli d'Israele che, tornando in dietro, si accampino dinanzi a Fihahirot, che è tra Magdalum e il mare, di fronte a Beelsefon: accampatevi di faccia a quel luogo, presso il mare.
3 and then Pharaoh wil think, "The Israelites are wandering to and fro in the countryside; the desert hasclosed in on them."	3 Così Faraone dirà dei figli d'Israele: Son rinchiusi nel paese, sono serrati dal deserto.
4 I shal then make Pharaoh stubborn and he wil set out in pursuit of them; and I shall win glory formyself at the expense of Pharaoh and his whole army, and then the Egyptians wil know that I am Yahweh.' Andthe Israelites did this.	4 « Allora io indurerò il suo cuore ed egli v'inseguirà, ma io sarò glorificato in Faraone e in tutto il suo esercito; e gli Egiziani conosceranno che io sono il Signore ». Ed essi cosi fecero.
5 When Pharaoh king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, he and his officials changed theirattitude towards the people. 'What have we done,' they said, 'allowing Israel to leave our service?'	5 Essendo annunziata al re degli Egiziani la fuga del popolo, il cuore di Faraone e dei suoi servi mutò sentimento a riguardo del popolo, e dissero: « Che abbiamo inteso di fare col lasciar partire Israele in modo che non ci serva più? »
6 So Pharaoh had his chariot harnessed and set out with his troops,	6 E Faraone allora fece attaccare il suo cocchio, e prese con sè tutto il suo popolo;
7 taking six hundred of the best chariots and al the other chariots in Egypt, with officers in each.	7 e prese seicento cocchi scelti, e tutti i cocchi d'Egitto e i capi di tutto l'esercito.
8 Yahweh made Pharaoh king of Egypt stubborn, and he gave chase to the Israelites. The Israelitesmarched confidently away,	8 Il Signore indurò il cuore di Faraone re d'Egitto, che inseguì i figli d'Israele; ma essi erano usciti sotto una mano potente.
9 but the Egyptians, al Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, his horsemen and his army, gave chase andcaught up with them where they lay encamped beside the sea near Pi-Hahiroth, facing Baal-Zephon.	9 Or dunque gli Egiziani, inseguendo gli Israeliti che erano avanti, li raggiunsero mentre stavano accampati; tutta la cavalleria e i cocchi di Faraone e tutto l'esercito erano in Fihahirot, di fronte a Beelsefon.
10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up -- and there were the Egyptians in pursuit of them!The Israelites were terrified and cried out to Yahweh for help.	10 E quando Faraone fu vicino, i figli d'Israele, alzando gli occhi e vedendo gli Egiziani alle spalle, ebbero grande paura e gridarono al Signore.
11 To Moses they said, 'Was it for lack of graves in Egypt, that you had to lead us out to die in thedesert? What was the point of bringing us out of Egypt?	11 E dissero a Mosè: « Mancavan forse sepolture in Egitto, che tu ci hai con dotti a morire nel deserto? Che hai inteso di fare col trarci dall'Egitto?
12 Did we not tell you as much in Egypt? Leave us alone, we said, we would rather work for theEgyptians! We prefer to work for the Egyptians than to die in the desert!'	12 Non te lo dicevamo in Egitto: Lasciaci stare, lasciaci servire agli Egiziani? Certo era meglio servire ad essi che morire nel deserto! »
13 Moses said to the people, 'Do not be afraid! Stand firm, and you wil see what Yahweh wil do torescue you today: the Egyptians you see today you wil never see again.	13 E Mosè disse al popolo: « Non temete: state fermi a vedere i prodigi che oggi farà il Signore: gli Egiziani che or vedete non li vedrete mai più in eterno.
14 Yahweh will do the fighting for you; al you need to do is to keep calm.'	14 Il Signore combatterà per voi che starete quieti e tranquilli ».
15 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Why cry out to me? Tel the Israelites to march on.	15 E il Signore disse a Mosè: « Perchè gridi verso di me? Di' ai figli d'Israele che si mettano in viaggio.
16 Your part is to raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that theIsraelites can walk through the sea on dry ground,	16 E tu alza la tua verga, e, stendendo la tua mano sopra il mare, dividilo, affinchè i figli d'Israele camminino in mezzo al mare per l'asciutto.
17 while I, for my part, shal make the Egyptians so stubborn that they wil follow them, and I shall winglory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and al his army, chariots and horsemen.	17 Ed io indurerò il cuore degli Egiziani, affinchè v'inseguano e sarò glorificato in Faraone e in tutto il suo esercito e nei suoi cocchi e nei suoi cavalieri.
18 And when I have won glory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and his chariots and horsemen, theEgyptians wil know that I am Yahweh.'	18 E gli Egiziani sapranno che io sono il Signore, quando sarò stato glorificato in Faraone, nei suoi cocchi e nei suoi cavalieri.
19 Then the angel of God, who preceded the army of Israel, changed station and fol owed behind them.The pil ar of cloud moved from their front and took position behind them.	19 Allora l'angelo del Signore che precedeva le schiere d'Israele si mosse e andò alle loro spalle, e con lui anche la colonna di nube, lasciando il fronte, andò di dietro,
20 It came between the army of the Egyptians and the army of Israel. The cloud was dark, and the nightpassed without the one drawing any closer to the other the whole night long.	20 omettendosi tra il campo degli Egiziani e quello degli Ebrei, e la nube (da un lato) tenebrosa, (dall'altro) illuminava la notte, in modo che per tutto il tempo della notte non poterono avvicinarsi gli uni agli altri.
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Yahweh drove the sea back with a strongeasterly wind al night and made the sea into dry land. The waters were divided	21 Or avendo Mosè stesa la sua mano sul mare, il Signore fece che il mare si ritirasse, e facendo soffiare per tutta la notte un vento im petuoso e ardente, lo asciugò, e l'acqua fu divisa.
22 and the Israelites went on dry ground right through the sea, with wal s of water to right and left ofthem.	22 E i figli d'Israele entrarono in mezzo al mare asciutto, mentre le acque stavano a guisa di muro alla loro destra e alla loro sinistra.
23 The Egyptians gave chase, and all Pharaoh's horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea afterthem.	23 E gli Egiziani, e tutta la cavalleria di Faraone, e i suoi cocchi e cavalieri entrarono dietro a loro nel mare.
24 In the morning watch, Yahweh looked down on the army of the Egyptians from the pil ar of fire andcloud and threw the Egyptian army into confusion.	24 Era già la vigilia del mattino, quand'ecco il Signore, guardando dalla colonna di fuoco e dalla nuvola il campo degli Egiziani, lo fece perire.
25 He so clogged their chariot wheels that they drove on only with difficulty, which made the Egyptianssay, 'Let us flee from Israel, for Yahweh is fighting on their side against the Egyptians!'	25 Fece rovesciare le ruote dei cocchi che eran trascinati nel profondo. Dissero allora gli Egiziani: « Fuggiamo Israele, perchè il Signore combatte per loro contro di noi! »
26 Then Yahweh said to Moses, 'Stretch out your hand over the sea and let the waters flow back on theEgyptians and on their chariots and their horsemen.'	26 E il Signore disse a Mosè: « Stendi la tua mano sul mare, affinchè le acque piombino su gli Egiziani, sopra i loro cocchi e i loro cavalieri».
27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and, as day broke, the sea returned to its bed. The fleeingEgyptians ran straight into it, and Yahweh overthrew the Egyptians in the middle of the sea.	27 E avendo Mosè stesa la mano verso il mare, sul far della mattina, il mare tornò al suo posto di prima, e le acque piombarono addosso agli Egiziani che fuggivano: così il Signore li travolse in mezzo ai flutti.
28 The returning waters washed right over the chariots and horsemen of Pharaoh's entire army, whichhad fol owed the Israelites into the sea; not a single one of them was left.	28 E le acque, ritornando, coprirono i cocchi e i cavalieri di tutto l'esercito di Faraone, che per inseguire erano entrati nel mare: non ne scampò neppure uno.
29 The Israelites, however, had marched through the sea on dry ground, with wal s of water to right andleft of them.	29 Ma i figli d'Israele camminaron sull'asciutto in mezzo al mare, e le acque eran per loro come un muro a destra e a sinistra.
30 That day, Yahweh rescued Israel from the clutches of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptianslying dead on the sea-shore.	30 Così in quel giorno il Signore liberò Israele dalle mani degli Egiziani.
31 When Israel saw the mighty deed that Yahweh had performed against the Egyptians, the peoplerevered Yahweh and put their faith in Yahweh and in Moses, his servant.	31 E gl'israeliti videro sul lido del mare gli Egiziani morti e la grande potenza che il Signore aveva dimostrato contro di essi. E il popolo temette il Signore, e credette al Signore e a Mosè suo servo.
