Exodus 14

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	1 El Señor habló a Moisés en estos términos:
2 'Tel the Israelites to turn back and pitch camp in front of Pi-Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea,facing Baal-Zephon. You must pitch your camp opposite this place, beside the sea,	2 «Ordena a los israelitas que vuelvan atrás y acampen delante de Pihajirot, entre Migdol y el mar, frente a Baal Sefón. Acampen a orillas del mar, frente al lugar indicado.
3 and then Pharaoh wil think, "The Israelites are wandering to and fro in the countryside; the desert hasclosed in on them."	3 Así el Faraón creerá que ustedes vagan sin rumbo por el país y que el desierto les cierra el paso.
4 I shal then make Pharaoh stubborn and he wil set out in pursuit of them; and I shall win glory formyself at the expense of Pharaoh and his whole army, and then the Egyptians wil know that I am Yahweh.' Andthe Israelites did this.	4 Yo, por mi parte, endureceré su corazón para que salga a perseguirlos, y me cubriré de gloria a expensas de él y de todo su ejército. Así los egipcios sabrán que yo soy el Señor». Los israelitas cumplieron esta orden.
5 When Pharaoh king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, he and his officials changed theirattitude towards the people. 'What have we done,' they said, 'allowing Israel to leave our service?'	5 Cuando informaron al rey de Egipto que el pueblo había huido, el Faraón y sus servidores cambiaron de idea con respecto al pueblo, y exclamaron: «¿Qué hemos hecho? Dejando partir a Israel, nos veremos privados de sus servicios».
6 So Pharaoh had his chariot harnessed and set out with his troops,	6 Entonces el Faraón hizo enganchar su carro de guerra y alistó sus tropas.
7 taking six hundred of the best chariots and al the other chariots in Egypt, with officers in each.	7 Tomó seiscientos carros escogidos y todos los carros de Egipto, con tres hombres en cada uno.
8 Yahweh made Pharaoh king of Egypt stubborn, and he gave chase to the Israelites. The Israelitesmarched confidently away,	8 El Señor endureció el corazón del Faraón, el rey de Egipto, y este se lanzó en persecución de los israelitas, mientras ellos salían triunfalmente.
9 but the Egyptians, al Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, his horsemen and his army, gave chase andcaught up with them where they lay encamped beside the sea near Pi-Hahiroth, facing Baal-Zephon.	9 Los egipcios los persiguieron los caballos y los carros de guerra del Faraón, los conductores de los carros y todo su ejército; y los alcanzaron cuando estaban acampados junto al mar, cerca de Pihajirot, frente a Baal Sefón.
10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up -- and there were the Egyptians in pursuit of them!The Israelites were terrified and cried out to Yahweh for help.	10 Cuando el Faraón ya estaba cerca, los israelitas levantaron los ojos y, al ver que los egipcios avanzaban detrás de ellos, se llenaron de pánico e invocaron a gritos al Señor.
11 To Moses they said, 'Was it for lack of graves in Egypt, that you had to lead us out to die in thedesert? What was the point of bringing us out of Egypt?	11 Y dijeron a Moisés: «¿No había tumbas en Egipto para que nos trajeras a morir en el desierto? ¿Qué favor nos has hecho sacándonos de allí?
12 Did we not tell you as much in Egypt? Leave us alone, we said, we would rather work for theEgyptians! We prefer to work for the Egyptians than to die in the desert!'	12 Ya te lo decíamos cuando estábamos en Egipto: "¡Déjanos tranquilos! Queremos servir a los egipcios, porque más vale estar al servicio de ellos que morir en el desierto"».
13 Moses said to the people, 'Do not be afraid! Stand firm, and you wil see what Yahweh wil do torescue you today: the Egyptians you see today you wil never see again.	13 Moisés respondió al pueblo: «¡No teman! Manténganse firmes, porque hoy mismo ustedes van a ver lo que hará el Señor para salvarlos. A esos egipcios que están viendo hoy, nunca más los volverán a ver.
14 Yahweh will do the fighting for you; al you need to do is to keep calm.'	14 El Señor combatirá por ustedes, sin que ustedes tengan que preocuparse por nada».
15 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Why cry out to me? Tel the Israelites to march on.	15 Después el Señor dijo a Moisés: «¿Por qué me invocas con esos gritos? Ordena a los israelitas que reanuden la marcha.
16 Your part is to raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that theIsraelites can walk through the sea on dry ground,	16 Y tú, con el bastón en alto, extiende tu mano sobre el mar y divídelo en dos, para que puedan cruzarlo a pie.
17 while I, for my part, shal make the Egyptians so stubborn that they wil follow them, and I shall winglory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and al his army, chariots and horsemen.	17 Yo voy a endurecer el corazón de los egipcios, y ellos entrarán en el mar detrás de los israelitas. Así me cubriré de gloria a expensas del Faraón y de su ejército, de sus carros y de sus guerreros.
18 And when I have won glory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and his chariots and horsemen, theEgyptians wil know that I am Yahweh.'	18 Los egipcios sabrán que soy el Señor, cuando yo me cubra de gloria a expensas del Faraón, de sus carros y de sus guerreros».
19 Then the angel of God, who preceded the army of Israel, changed station and fol owed behind them.The pil ar of cloud moved from their front and took position behind them.	19 El Angel de Dios, que avanzaba al frente del campamento de Israel, retrocedió hasta colocarse detrás de ellos; y la columna de nube se desplazó también de delante hacia atrás,
20 It came between the army of the Egyptians and the army of Israel. The cloud was dark, and the nightpassed without the one drawing any closer to the other the whole night long.	20 interponiéndose entre el campamento egipcio y el de Israel. La nube era tenebrosa para unos, mientras que para los otros iluminaba la noche, de manera que en toda la noche no pudieron acercarse los unos a los otros.
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Yahweh drove the sea back with a strongeasterly wind al night and made the sea into dry land. The waters were divided	21 Entonces Moisés extendió su mano sobre el mar, y el Señor hizo retroceder el mar con un fuerte viento del este, que sopló toda la noche y transformó el mar en tierra seca. Las aguas se abrieron,
22 and the Israelites went on dry ground right through the sea, with wal s of water to right and left ofthem.	22 y los israelitas entraron a pie en el cauce del mar, mientras las aguas formaban una muralla a derecha e izquierda.
23 The Egyptians gave chase, and all Pharaoh's horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea afterthem.	23 Los egipcios los persiguieron, y toda la caballería del Faraón, sus carros y sus guerreros, entraron detrás de ellos en medio del mar.
24 In the morning watch, Yahweh looked down on the army of the Egyptians from the pil ar of fire andcloud and threw the Egyptian army into confusion.	24 Cuando estaba por despuntar el alba, el Señor observó las tropas egipcias desde la columna de fuego y de nube, y sembró la confusión entre ellos.
25 He so clogged their chariot wheels that they drove on only with difficulty, which made the Egyptianssay, 'Let us flee from Israel, for Yahweh is fighting on their side against the Egyptians!'	25 Además, frenó las ruedas de sus carros de guerra, haciendo que avanzaran con dificultad. Los egipcios exclamaron: «Huyamos de Israel, porque el Señor combate en favor de ellos contra Egipto».
26 Then Yahweh said to Moses, 'Stretch out your hand over the sea and let the waters flow back on theEgyptians and on their chariots and their horsemen.'	26 El Señor dijo a Moisés: «Extiende tu mano sobre el mar, para que las aguas se vuelvan contra los egipcios, sus carros y sus guerreros».
27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and, as day broke, the sea returned to its bed. The fleeingEgyptians ran straight into it, and Yahweh overthrew the Egyptians in the middle of the sea.	27 Moisés extendió su mano sobre el mar y, al amanecer, el mar volvió a su cauce. Los egipcios ya habían emprendido la huida, pero se encontraron con las aguas, y el Señor los hundió en el mar.
28 The returning waters washed right over the chariots and horsemen of Pharaoh's entire army, whichhad fol owed the Israelites into the sea; not a single one of them was left.	28 Las aguas envolvieron totalmente a los carros y a los guerreros de todo el ejército del Faraón que habían entrado en medio del mar para perseguir a los israelitas. Ni uno solo se salvó.
29 The Israelites, however, had marched through the sea on dry ground, with wal s of water to right andleft of them.	29 Los israelitas, en cambio, fueron caminando por el cauce seco del mar, mientras las aguas formaban una muralla, a derecha e izquierda.
30 That day, Yahweh rescued Israel from the clutches of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptianslying dead on the sea-shore.	30 Aquel día, el Señor salvó a Israel de las manos de los egipcios. Israel vio los cadáveres de los egipcios que yacían a la orilla del mar,
31 When Israel saw the mighty deed that Yahweh had performed against the Egyptians, the peoplerevered Yahweh and put their faith in Yahweh and in Moses, his servant.	31 y fue testigo de la hazaña que el Señor realizó contra Egipto. El pueblo temió al Señor, y creyó en él y en Moisés, su servidor.
