Exodus 14

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	1 Il Signore disse a Mosè:
2 'Tel the Israelites to turn back and pitch camp in front of Pi-Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea,facing Baal-Zephon. You must pitch your camp opposite this place, beside the sea,	2 "Di' ai figli d'Israele di ritornare e di accamparsi di fronte a Pi-Achirot, tra Migdol e il mare, di fronte a Baal-Zefon: vi accamperete davanti a quel luogo, ai bordi del mare.
3 and then Pharaoh wil think, "The Israelites are wandering to and fro in the countryside; the desert hasclosed in on them."	3 Il faraone penserà dei figli d'Israele: "Vagano qua e là nel paese; il deserto si è chiuso su di loro".
4 I shal then make Pharaoh stubborn and he wil set out in pursuit of them; and I shall win glory formyself at the expense of Pharaoh and his whole army, and then the Egyptians wil know that I am Yahweh.' Andthe Israelites did this.	4 E indurirò il cuore del faraone e li inseguirà, e io prenderò gloria dal faraone e da tutto il suo esercito, e l'Egitto saprà che io sono il Signore". Essi fecero così.
5 When Pharaoh king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, he and his officials changed theirattitude towards the people. 'What have we done,' they said, 'allowing Israel to leave our service?'	5 Fu annunciato al re d'Egitto che il popolo era fuggito, e il cuore del faraone e dei suoi servi si rivoltò verso il popolo e dissero: "Perché abbiamo fatto questo: mandar via Israele dal nostro servizio?".
6 So Pharaoh had his chariot harnessed and set out with his troops,	6 Fece preparare il suo carro e prese con sé il suo popolo.
7 taking six hundred of the best chariots and al the other chariots in Egypt, with officers in each.	7 Prese seicento carri scelti e tutti i carri d'Egitto, con il terzo uomo su ognuno di quelli.
8 Yahweh made Pharaoh king of Egypt stubborn, and he gave chase to the Israelites. The Israelitesmarched confidently away,	8 Il Signore indurì il cuore del faraone, re d'Egitto, e questi inseguì i figli d'Israele; i figli d'Israele uscirono con mano alta.
9 but the Egyptians, al Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, his horsemen and his army, gave chase andcaught up with them where they lay encamped beside the sea near Pi-Hahiroth, facing Baal-Zephon.	9 Gli Egiziani li inseguirono e li raggiunsero quando erano accampati presso il mare, a Pi-Achirot, davanti a Baal-Zefon: tutti i cavalli, i carri del faraone, i suoi cavalieri e il suo esercito.
10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up -- and there were the Egyptians in pursuit of them!The Israelites were terrified and cried out to Yahweh for help.	10 Il faraone si avvicinava: i figli d'Israele alzarono gli occhi, ed ecco gli Egiziani si muovevano dietro a loro! I figli d'Israele ebbero molta paura e gridarono al Signore.
11 To Moses they said, 'Was it for lack of graves in Egypt, that you had to lead us out to die in thedesert? What was the point of bringing us out of Egypt?	11 Dissero a Mosè: "Eravamo forse senza tombe in Egitto, per portarci a morire nel deserto? Perché hai fatto questo, di farci uscire dall'Egitto?
12 Did we not tell you as much in Egypt? Leave us alone, we said, we would rather work for theEgyptians! We prefer to work for the Egyptians than to die in the desert!'	12 Non era forse questo che ti dicevamo in Egitto: lasciaci stare a lavorare in Egitto, perché è meglio per noi lavorare in Egitto che morire nel deserto?".
13 Moses said to the people, 'Do not be afraid! Stand firm, and you wil see what Yahweh wil do torescue you today: the Egyptians you see today you wil never see again.	13 Mosè disse al popolo: "Non temete: siate saldi e vedrete la salvezza che il Signore opera per voi oggi: poiché gli Egiziani che vedete oggi non li vedrete mai più.
14 Yahweh will do the fighting for you; al you need to do is to keep calm.'	14 Il Signore combatterà per voi e voi sarete tranquilli".
15 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Why cry out to me? Tel the Israelites to march on.	15 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Perché gridi verso di me? Di' ai figli d'Israele di partire.
16 Your part is to raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that theIsraelites can walk through the sea on dry ground,	16 Tu alza il tuo bastone e stendi la tua mano sopra il mare e si separi, e i figli d'Israele passino in mezzo al mare all'asciutto.
17 while I, for my part, shal make the Egyptians so stubborn that they wil follow them, and I shall winglory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and al his army, chariots and horsemen.	17 Ecco: io indurisco il cuore degli Egiziani: li seguiranno e io trarrò gloria dal faraone, da tutto il suo esercito, i suoi carri e i suoi cavalieri,
18 And when I have won glory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and his chariots and horsemen, theEgyptians wil know that I am Yahweh.'	18 e l'Egitto saprà che io sono il Signore, quando trarrò gloria dal faraone, dai suoi carri e cavalieri".
19 Then the angel of God, who preceded the army of Israel, changed station and fol owed behind them.The pil ar of cloud moved from their front and took position behind them.	19 L'angelo di Dio, che precedeva l'accampamento d'Israele, si mosse e andò dietro a loro, e anche la colonna di nube si mosse dal davanti e passò dietro:
20 It came between the army of the Egyptians and the army of Israel. The cloud was dark, and the nightpassed without the one drawing any closer to the other the whole night long.	20 venne così tra l'accampamento degli Egiziani e l'accampamento d'Israele. La nube era oscura per gli uni, mentre per gli altri illuminava la notte: e tutta la notte non ci si avvicinò l'uno all'altro.
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Yahweh drove the sea back with a strongeasterly wind al night and made the sea into dry land. The waters were divided	21 Mosè stese la sua mano sopra il mare e il Signore sospinse il mare con un forte vento dell'est tutta la notte e mise a secco il mare. Il mare si divise.
22 and the Israelites went on dry ground right through the sea, with wal s of water to right and left ofthem.	22 I figli d'Israele vennero in mezzo al mare all'asciutto e l'acqua era per loro un muro a destra e a sinistra.
23 The Egyptians gave chase, and all Pharaoh's horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea afterthem.	23 Gli Egiziani inseguirono, e tutti i cavalli del faraone, i suoi carri, i suoi cavalieri giunsero dietro a loro in mezzo al mare.
24 In the morning watch, Yahweh looked down on the army of the Egyptians from the pil ar of fire andcloud and threw the Egyptian army into confusion.	24 Nella veglia del mattino il Signore guardò l'accampamento egiziano attraverso la colonna di fuoco e la nube, e mise la confusione nell'accampamento egiziano.
25 He so clogged their chariot wheels that they drove on only with difficulty, which made the Egyptianssay, 'Let us flee from Israel, for Yahweh is fighting on their side against the Egyptians!'	25 Frenò le ruote dei loro carri, per cui guidavano a fatica. Gli Egiziani dissero: "Fuggiamo davanti a Israele, perché il Signore combatte per loro contro l'Egitto".
26 Then Yahweh said to Moses, 'Stretch out your hand over the sea and let the waters flow back on theEgyptians and on their chariots and their horsemen.'	26 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Stendi la tua mano sopra il mare e l'acqua torni sugli Egiziani, sui loro carri e sui loro cavalieri".
27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and, as day broke, the sea returned to its bed. The fleeingEgyptians ran straight into it, and Yahweh overthrew the Egyptians in the middle of the sea.	27 Mosè stese la sua mano sul mare: verso il mattino, il mare tornò al suo posto consueto, gli Egiziani fuggirono di fronte ad esso e il Signore travolse gli Egiziani nel mezzo del mare.
28 The returning waters washed right over the chariots and horsemen of Pharaoh's entire army, whichhad fol owed the Israelites into the sea; not a single one of them was left.	28 L'acqua ritornò e coprì i carri, i cavalieri e tutto l'esercito del faraone che veniva dietro a loro nel mare: di loro non ne restò neppure uno.
29 The Israelites, however, had marched through the sea on dry ground, with wal s of water to right andleft of them.	29 Invece i figli d'Israele avevano camminato all'asciutto in mezzo al mare e l'acqua fu per loro un muro a destra e a sinistra.
30 That day, Yahweh rescued Israel from the clutches of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptianslying dead on the sea-shore.	30 Quel giorno il Signore salvò Israele dalla mano dell'Egitto e Israele vide gli Egiziani morti ai bordi del mare.
31 When Israel saw the mighty deed that Yahweh had performed against the Egyptians, the peoplerevered Yahweh and put their faith in Yahweh and in Moses, his servant.	31 Israele vide la grande potenza che il Signore aveva usato contro l'Egitto e il popolo temette il Signore e credette a lui e a Mosè, suo servo.
