Exodus 14

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	1 Yahvé parla à Moïse et lui dit:
2 'Tel the Israelites to turn back and pitch camp in front of Pi-Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea,facing Baal-Zephon. You must pitch your camp opposite this place, beside the sea,	2 "Dis aux Israélites de rebrousser chemin et de camper devant Pi-Hahirot, entre Migdol et la mer,devant Baal-Cephôn; vous camperez face à ce lieu, au bord de la mer.
3 and then Pharaoh wil think, "The Israelites are wandering to and fro in the countryside; the desert hasclosed in on them."	3 Pharaon dira des Israélites: Les voilà qui errent dans le pays, le désert s'est refermé sur eux.
4 I shal then make Pharaoh stubborn and he wil set out in pursuit of them; and I shall win glory formyself at the expense of Pharaoh and his whole army, and then the Egyptians wil know that I am Yahweh.' Andthe Israelites did this.	4 J'endurcirai le coeur de Pharaon et il se lancera à leur poursuite. Je me glorifierai aux dépens dePharaon et de toute son armée, et les Egyptiens sauront que je suis Yahvé." C'est ce qu'ils firent.
5 When Pharaoh king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, he and his officials changed theirattitude towards the people. 'What have we done,' they said, 'allowing Israel to leave our service?'	5 Lorsqu'on annonça au roi d'Egypte que le peuple avait fui, le coeur de Pharaon et de ses serviteurschangea à l'égard du peuple. Ils dirent: "Qu'avons-nous fait là, de laisser Israël quitter notre service!"
6 So Pharaoh had his chariot harnessed and set out with his troops,	6 Pharaon fit atteler son char et emmena son armée.
7 taking six hundred of the best chariots and al the other chariots in Egypt, with officers in each.	7 Il prit 600 des meilleurs chars et tous les chars d'Egypte, chacun d'eux monté par des officiers.
8 Yahweh made Pharaoh king of Egypt stubborn, and he gave chase to the Israelites. The Israelitesmarched confidently away,	8 Yahvé endurcit le coeur de Pharaon, le roi d'Egypte, qui se lança à la poursuite des Israélites sortantla main haute.
9 but the Egyptians, al Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, his horsemen and his army, gave chase andcaught up with them where they lay encamped beside the sea near Pi-Hahiroth, facing Baal-Zephon.	9 Les Egyptiens se lancèrent à leur poursuite et les rejoignirent alors qu'ils campaient au bord de lamer -- tous les chevaux de Pharaon, ses chars, ses cavaliers et son armée -- près de Pi-Hahirot, devant Baal-Cephôn.
10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up -- and there were the Egyptians in pursuit of them!The Israelites were terrified and cried out to Yahweh for help.	10 Comme Pharaon approchait, les Israélites levèrent les yeux, et voici que les Egyptiens lespoursuivaient. Les Israélites eurent grand-peur et crièrent vers Yahvé.
11 To Moses they said, 'Was it for lack of graves in Egypt, that you had to lead us out to die in thedesert? What was the point of bringing us out of Egypt?	11 Ils dirent à Moïse: "Manquait-il de tombeaux en Egypte, que tu nous aies menés mourir dans ledésert? Que nous as-tu fait en nous faisant sortir d'Egypte?
12 Did we not tell you as much in Egypt? Leave us alone, we said, we would rather work for theEgyptians! We prefer to work for the Egyptians than to die in the desert!'	12 Ne te disions-nous pas en Egypte: Laisse-nous servir les Egyptiens, car mieux vaut pour nousservir les Egyptiens que de mourir dans le désert?"
13 Moses said to the people, 'Do not be afraid! Stand firm, and you wil see what Yahweh wil do torescue you today: the Egyptians you see today you wil never see again.	13 Moïse dit au peuple: "Ne craignez pas! Tenez ferme et vous verrez ce que Yahvé va faire pourvous sauver aujourd'hui, car les Egyptiens que vous voyez aujourd'hui, vous ne les reverrez plus jamais.
14 Yahweh will do the fighting for you; al you need to do is to keep calm.'	14 Yahvé combattra pour vous; vous, vous n'aurez qu'à rester tranquilles."
15 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Why cry out to me? Tel the Israelites to march on.	15 Yahvé dit à Moïse: "Pourquoi cries-tu vers moi? Dis aux Israélites de repartir.
16 Your part is to raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that theIsraelites can walk through the sea on dry ground,	16 Toi, lève ton bâton, étends ta main sur la mer et fends-la, que les Israélites puissent pénétrer à piedsec au milieu de la mer.
17 while I, for my part, shal make the Egyptians so stubborn that they wil follow them, and I shall winglory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and al his army, chariots and horsemen.	17 Moi, j'endurcirai le coeur des Egyptiens, ils pénétreront à leur suite et je me glorifierai aux dépensde Pharaon, de toute son armée, de ses chars et de ses cavaliers.
18 And when I have won glory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and his chariots and horsemen, theEgyptians wil know that I am Yahweh.'	18 Les Egyptiens sauront que je suis Yahvé quand je me serai glorifié aux dépens de Pharaon, de seschars et de ses cavaliers."
19 Then the angel of God, who preceded the army of Israel, changed station and fol owed behind them.The pil ar of cloud moved from their front and took position behind them.	19 L'Ange de Dieu qui marchait en avant du camp d'Israël se déplaça et marcha derrière eux, et lacolonne de nuée se déplaça de devant eux et se tint derrière eux.
20 It came between the army of the Egyptians and the army of Israel. The cloud was dark, and the nightpassed without the one drawing any closer to the other the whole night long.	20 Elle vint entre le camp des Egyptiens et le camp d'Israël. La nuée était ténébreuse et la nuits'écoula sans que l'un puisse s'approcher de l'autre de toute la nuit.
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Yahweh drove the sea back with a strongeasterly wind al night and made the sea into dry land. The waters were divided	21 Moïse étendit la main sur la mer, et Yahvé refoula la mer toute la nuit par un fort vent d'est; il lamit à sec et toutes les eaux se fendirent.
22 and the Israelites went on dry ground right through the sea, with wal s of water to right and left ofthem.	22 Les Israélites pénétrèrent à pied sec au milieu de la mer, et les eaux leur formaient une muraille àdroite et à gauche.
23 The Egyptians gave chase, and all Pharaoh's horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea afterthem.	23 Les Egyptiens les poursuivirent, et tous les chevaux de Pharaon, ses chars et ses cavalierspénétrèrent à leur suite au milieu de la mer.
24 In the morning watch, Yahweh looked down on the army of the Egyptians from the pil ar of fire andcloud and threw the Egyptian army into confusion.	24 A la veille du matin, Yahvé regarda de la colonne de feu et de nuée vers le camp des Egyptiens, etjeta la confusion dans le camp des Egyptiens.
25 He so clogged their chariot wheels that they drove on only with difficulty, which made the Egyptianssay, 'Let us flee from Israel, for Yahweh is fighting on their side against the Egyptians!'	25 Il enraya les roues de leurs chars qui n'avançaient plus qu'à grand-peine. Les Egyptiens dirent:"Fuyons devant Israël car Yahvé combat avec eux contre les Egyptiens!"
26 Then Yahweh said to Moses, 'Stretch out your hand over the sea and let the waters flow back on theEgyptians and on their chariots and their horsemen.'	26 Yahvé dit à Moïse: "Etends ta main sur la mer, que les eaux refluent sur les Egyptiens, sur leurschars et sur leurs cavaliers."
27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and, as day broke, the sea returned to its bed. The fleeingEgyptians ran straight into it, and Yahweh overthrew the Egyptians in the middle of the sea.	27 Moïse étendit la main sur la mer et, au point du jour, la mer rentra dans son lit. Les Egyptiens enfuyant la rencontrèrent, et Yahvé culbuta les Egyptiens au milieu de la mer.
28 The returning waters washed right over the chariots and horsemen of Pharaoh's entire army, whichhad fol owed the Israelites into the sea; not a single one of them was left.	28 Les eaux refluèrent et recouvrirent les chars et les cavaliers de toute l'armée de Pharaon, quiavaient pénétré derrière eux dans la mer. Il n'en resta pas un seul.
29 The Israelites, however, had marched through the sea on dry ground, with wal s of water to right andleft of them.	29 Les Israélites, eux, marchèrent à pied sec au milieu de la mer, et les eaux leur formèrent unemuraille à droite et à gauche.
30 That day, Yahweh rescued Israel from the clutches of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptianslying dead on the sea-shore.	30 Ce jour-là, Yahvé sauva Israël des mains des Egyptiens, et Israël vit les Egyptiens morts au bordde la mer.
31 When Israel saw the mighty deed that Yahweh had performed against the Egyptians, the peoplerevered Yahweh and put their faith in Yahweh and in Moses, his servant.	31 Israël vit la prouesse accomplie par Yahvé contre les Egyptiens. Le peuple craignit Yahvé, il cruten Yahvé et en Moïse son serviteur.
