Exodus 14

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	1 O Senhor disse a Moisés:
2 'Tel the Israelites to turn back and pitch camp in front of Pi-Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea,facing Baal-Zephon. You must pitch your camp opposite this place, beside the sea,	2 "Dize aos israelitas que mudem de direção e venham acampar diante de Fiairot, entre Magdalum e o mar, defronte de Beelsefon: acampareis defronte desse lugar, perto do mar.
3 and then Pharaoh wil think, "The Israelites are wandering to and fro in the countryside; the desert hasclosed in on them."	3 O faraó vai pensar: os israelitas perderam-se no país, e o deserto os encerrou.
4 I shal then make Pharaoh stubborn and he wil set out in pursuit of them; and I shall win glory formyself at the expense of Pharaoh and his whole army, and then the Egyptians wil know that I am Yahweh.' Andthe Israelites did this.	4 Endurecerei o coração do faraó, e ele os perseguirá; mas eu triunfarei gloriosamente sobre o faraó e sobre todo o seu exército, e os egípcios saberão que eu sou o Senhor." Os israelitas obedeceram.
5 When Pharaoh king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, he and his officials changed theirattitude towards the people. 'What have we done,' they said, 'allowing Israel to leave our service?'	5 Quando se anunciou ao rei do Egito que o povo tinha fugido, o coração do faraó e de seus servos voltou-se contra o povo: "Que fizemos, disseram eles, deixando partir Israel e renunciando assim ao seu serviço!"
6 So Pharaoh had his chariot harnessed and set out with his troops,	6 O faraó mandou preparar seu carro e levou com ele suas tropas.
7 taking six hundred of the best chariots and al the other chariots in Egypt, with officers in each.	7 Escolheu seiscentos carros dos melhores e todos os carros egípcios com homens de guerra em cada um deles.
8 Yahweh made Pharaoh king of Egypt stubborn, and he gave chase to the Israelites. The Israelitesmarched confidently away,	8 O Senhor endureceu o coração do faraó, rei do Egito, e este se pôs a perseguir os filhos de Israel. Eles haviam partido de cabeça erguida.
9 but the Egyptians, al Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, his horsemen and his army, gave chase andcaught up with them where they lay encamped beside the sea near Pi-Hahiroth, facing Baal-Zephon.	9 Puseram-se os egípcios a persegui-los e alcançaram-nos em seu acampamento à beira do mar: todos os cavalos dos carros do faraó, seus cavaleiros e seu exército alcançaram-nos perto de Fiairot, defronte de Beelsefon.
10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up -- and there were the Egyptians in pursuit of them!The Israelites were terrified and cried out to Yahweh for help.	10 Aproximando-se o faraó, os israelitas, ao levantarem os olhos, viram os egípcios que vinham ao seu encalço. Foram tomados de espanto e invocaram o Senhor, clamando em alta voz.
11 To Moses they said, 'Was it for lack of graves in Egypt, that you had to lead us out to die in thedesert? What was the point of bringing us out of Egypt?	11 E disseram a Moisés: "Não havia, porventura, túmulos no Egito, para que nos conduzisses a morrer no deserto? Por que nos fizeste isso, tirando-nos do Egito?
12 Did we not tell you as much in Egypt? Leave us alone, we said, we would rather work for theEgyptians! We prefer to work for the Egyptians than to die in the desert!'	12 Não te dizíamos no Egito: deixa-nos servir os egípcios! É melhor ser escravos dos egípcios do que morrer no deserto."
13 Moses said to the people, 'Do not be afraid! Stand firm, and you wil see what Yahweh wil do torescue you today: the Egyptians you see today you wil never see again.	13 Moisés respondeu ao povo: "Não temais! Tende ânimo, e vereis a libertação que o Senhor vai operar hoje em vosso favor. Os egípcios que hoje vedes, não os tornareis a ver jamais.
14 Yahweh will do the fighting for you; al you need to do is to keep calm.'	14 O Senhor combaterá por vós; quanto a vós, nada tereis a fazer."
15 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Why cry out to me? Tel the Israelites to march on.	15 O Senhor disse a Moisés: "Por que clamas a mim? Dize aos filhos de Israel que se ponham a caminho.
16 Your part is to raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that theIsraelites can walk through the sea on dry ground,	16 E tu, levanta a tua vara, estende a mão sobre o mar e fere-o, para que os israelitas possam atravessá-lo a pé enxuto.
17 while I, for my part, shal make the Egyptians so stubborn that they wil follow them, and I shall winglory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and al his army, chariots and horsemen.	17 Vou endurecer o coração dos egípcios, para que se ponham ao teu encalço, e triunfarei gloriosamente sobre o faraó e sobre todo o seu exército, seus carros e seus cavaleiros.
18 And when I have won glory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and his chariots and horsemen, theEgyptians wil know that I am Yahweh.'	18 Os egípcios saberão que eu sou o Senhor quando tiver alcançado esse glorioso triunfo sobre o faraó, seus carros e seus cavaleiros."
19 Then the angel of God, who preceded the army of Israel, changed station and fol owed behind them.The pil ar of cloud moved from their front and took position behind them.	19 O anjo de Deus, que marchava à frente do exército dos israelitas, mudou de lugar e passou para trás; a coluna de nuvens que os precedia pôs-se detrás deles,
20 It came between the army of the Egyptians and the army of Israel. The cloud was dark, and the nightpassed without the one drawing any closer to the other the whole night long.	20 entre o acampamento dos egípcios e o de Israel. Era obscura, e alumiava a noite. E não puderam aproximar-se um do outro, durante a noite inteira.
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Yahweh drove the sea back with a strongeasterly wind al night and made the sea into dry land. The waters were divided	21 Moisés estendeu a mão sobre o mar. O Senhor fê-lo recuar com um vento impetuoso vindo do oriente, que soprou toda a noite. E pôs o mar a seco. As águas dividiram-se
22 and the Israelites went on dry ground right through the sea, with wal s of water to right and left ofthem.	22 e os israelitas desceram a pé enxuto no meio do mar, enquanto as águas formavam uma muralha à direita e à esquerda.
23 The Egyptians gave chase, and all Pharaoh's horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea afterthem.	23 Os egípcios os perseguiram: todos os cavalos do faraó, seus carros e seus cavaleiros internaram-se após eles no leito do mar.
24 In the morning watch, Yahweh looked down on the army of the Egyptians from the pil ar of fire andcloud and threw the Egyptian army into confusion.	24 À vigília da manhã, o Senhor, do alto da coluna de fogo e da de nuvens, olhou para o acampamento dos egípcios e semeou o pânico no meio deles.
25 He so clogged their chariot wheels that they drove on only with difficulty, which made the Egyptianssay, 'Let us flee from Israel, for Yahweh is fighting on their side against the Egyptians!'	25 Embaraçou-lhes as rodas dos carros de tal sorte que, só dificilmente, conseguiam avançar. Disseram então os egípcios: "Fujamos diante de Israel, porque o Senhor combate por eles contra o Egito."
26 Then Yahweh said to Moses, 'Stretch out your hand over the sea and let the waters flow back on theEgyptians and on their chariots and their horsemen.'	26 O Senhor disse a Moisés: "Estende tua mão sobre o mar, e as águas voltar-se-ão sobre os egípcios, seus carros e seus cavaleiros."
27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and, as day broke, the sea returned to its bed. The fleeingEgyptians ran straight into it, and Yahweh overthrew the Egyptians in the middle of the sea.	27 Moisés estendeu a mão sobre o mar, e este, ao romper da manhã, voltou ao seu nível habitual. Os egípcios que fugiam foram de encontro a ele, e o Senhor derribou os egípcios no meio do mar.
28 The returning waters washed right over the chariots and horsemen of Pharaoh's entire army, whichhad fol owed the Israelites into the sea; not a single one of them was left.	28 As águas voltaram e cobriram os carros, os cavaleiros e todo o exército do faraó que havia descido no mar ao encalço dos israelitas. Não ficou um sequer.
29 The Israelites, however, had marched through the sea on dry ground, with wal s of water to right andleft of them.	29 Mas os israelitas tinham andado a pé enxuto no leito do mar, enquanto as águas formavam uma muralha à direita e à esquerda.
30 That day, Yahweh rescued Israel from the clutches of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptianslying dead on the sea-shore.	30 Foi assim que naquele dia o Senhor livrou Israel da mão dos egípcios. E Israel viu os cadáveres dos egípcios na praia do mar.
31 When Israel saw the mighty deed that Yahweh had performed against the Egyptians, the peoplerevered Yahweh and put their faith in Yahweh and in Moses, his servant.	31 Viu Israel o grande poder que o Senhor tinha exercido contra os egípcios. Por isso, o povo temeu o Senhor e confiou nele e em seu servo Moisés.
