Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
'Tel the Israelites to turn back and pitch camp in front of Pi-Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, facing Baal-Zephon. You must pitch your camp opposite this place, beside the sea,2 “Speak to the sons of Israel. Let them turn back and encamp away from the region of Pihahiroth, which is between Migdol and the sea, opposite Baal-zephon. In its sight you shall place your camp, above the sea.
and then Pharaoh wil think, "The Israelites are wandering to and fro in the countryside; the desert hasclosed in on them."3 And Pharaoh will say about the sons of Israel, ‘They have been confined by the land; the desert has enclosed them.’
I shal then make Pharaoh stubborn and he wil set out in pursuit of them; and I shall win glory formyself at the expense of Pharaoh and his whole army, and then the Egyptians wil know that I am Yahweh.' Andthe Israelites did this.4 And I will harden his heart, and so he will pursue you. And I will be glorified in Pharaoh, and in all his army. And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” And they did so.
When Pharaoh king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, he and his officials changed theirattitude towards the people. 'What have we done,' they said, 'allowing Israel to leave our service?'5 And it was reported to the king of the Egyptians that the people had fled. And the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was changed about the people, and they said, “What did we intend to do, so that we released Israel from serving us?”
So Pharaoh had his chariot harnessed and set out with his troops,6 Therefore, he harnessed his chariot, and he took all his people with him.
taking six hundred of the best chariots and al the other chariots in Egypt, with officers in each.7 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and whatever chariots were in Egypt, and also the leaders of the whole army.
Yahweh made Pharaoh king of Egypt stubborn, and he gave chase to the Israelites. The Israelitesmarched confidently away,8 And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he pursued the sons of Israel. But they were taken away by an exalted hand.
but the Egyptians, al Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, his horsemen and his army, gave chase andcaught up with them where they lay encamped beside the sea near Pi-Hahiroth, facing Baal-Zephon.9 And when the Egyptians followed the footsteps of those who preceded them, they found them in a camp above the sea. All the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and the entire army, were in Pihahiroth, opposite Baal-zephon.
As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up -- and there were the Egyptians in pursuit of them! The Israelites were terrified and cried out to Yahweh for help.10 And when Pharaoh had drawn near, the sons of Israel, lifting up their eyes, saw the Egyptians behind them. And they were very afraid. And they cried out to the Lord.
To Moses they said, 'Was it for lack of graves in Egypt, that you had to lead us out to die in thedesert? What was the point of bringing us out of Egypt?11 And they said to Moses: “Perhaps there were no graves in Egypt, for which reason you took us to die in the wilderness. What is it that you intended to do, in leading us out of Egypt?
Did we not tell you as much in Egypt? Leave us alone, we said, we would rather work for theEgyptians! We prefer to work for the Egyptians than to die in the desert!'12 Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying: Withdraw from us, so that we may serve the Egyptians? For it was much better to serve them, than to die in the wilderness.”
Moses said to the people, 'Do not be afraid! Stand firm, and you wil see what Yahweh wil do torescue you today: the Egyptians you see today you wil never see again.13 And Moses said to the people: “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and see the great wonders of the Lord, which he will do today. For the Egyptians, whom you now see, will never again be seen, forever.
Yahweh will do the fighting for you; al you need to do is to keep calm.'14 The Lord will fight on your behalf, and you will remain silent.”
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Why cry out to me? Tel the Israelites to march on.15 And the Lord said to Moses: “Why cry out to me? Tell the sons of Israel to continue on.
Your part is to raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that theIsraelites can walk through the sea on dry ground,16 Now, lift up your staff, and extend your hand over the sea and divide it, so that the sons of Israel may walk through the midst of the sea on dry ground.
while I, for my part, shal make the Egyptians so stubborn that they wil follow them, and I shall winglory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and al his army, chariots and horsemen.17 Then I will harden the heart of the Egyptians, so as to pursue you. And I will be glorified in Pharaoh, and in all his army, and in his chariots, and in his horsemen.
And when I have won glory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and his chariots and horsemen, theEgyptians wil know that I am Yahweh.'18 And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord, when I will be glorified in Pharaoh, and in his chariots, as well as in his horsemen.”
Then the angel of God, who preceded the army of Israel, changed station and fol owed behind them. The pil ar of cloud moved from their front and took position behind them.19 And the Angel of God, who preceded the camp of Israel, lifting himself up, went behind them. And the pillar of cloud, together with him, left the front for the rear
It came between the army of the Egyptians and the army of Israel. The cloud was dark, and the nightpassed without the one drawing any closer to the other the whole night long.20 and stood between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. And it was a dark cloud, yet it illuminated the night, so that they could not succeed at approaching one another at any time all that night.
Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Yahweh drove the sea back with a strongeasterly wind al night and made the sea into dry land. The waters were divided21 And when Moses had extended his hand over the sea, the Lord took it away by an intense burning wind, blowing throughout the night, and he turned it into dry ground. And the water was divided.
and the Israelites went on dry ground right through the sea, with wal s of water to right and left ofthem.22 And the sons of Israel went in through the midst of the dried sea. For the water was like a wall at their right hand and at their left hand.
The Egyptians gave chase, and all Pharaoh's horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea afterthem.23 And the Egyptians, pursuing them, went in after them, along with all of the horses of Pharaoh, his chariots and horsemen, through the midst of the sea.
In the morning watch, Yahweh looked down on the army of the Egyptians from the pil ar of fire andcloud and threw the Egyptian army into confusion.24 And now the morning watch had arrived, and behold, the Lord, looking down upon the camp of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of cloud, put to death their army.
He so clogged their chariot wheels that they drove on only with difficulty, which made the Egyptianssay, 'Let us flee from Israel, for Yahweh is fighting on their side against the Egyptians!'25 And he overturned the wheels of the chariots, and they were carried into the deep. Therefore, the Egyptians said: “Let us flee from Israel. For the Lord fights on their behalf against us.”
Then Yahweh said to Moses, 'Stretch out your hand over the sea and let the waters flow back on theEgyptians and on their chariots and their horsemen.'26 And the Lord said to Moses: “Extend your hand over the sea, so that the waters may return on the Egyptians, over their chariots and horsemen.”
Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and, as day broke, the sea returned to its bed. The fleeingEgyptians ran straight into it, and Yahweh overthrew the Egyptians in the middle of the sea.27 And when Moses had extended his hand opposite the sea, it was returned, at first light, to its former place. And the fleeing Egyptians met with the waters, and the Lord immersed them in the midst of the waves.
The returning waters washed right over the chariots and horsemen of Pharaoh's entire army, whichhad fol owed the Israelites into the sea; not a single one of them was left.28 And the waters were returned, and they covered the chariots and horsemen of the entire army of Pharaoh, who, in following, had entered into the sea. And not so much as one of them was left alive.
The Israelites, however, had marched through the sea on dry ground, with wal s of water to right andleft of them.29 But the sons of Israel continued directly through the midst of the dried sea, and the waters were to them like a wall on the right and on the left.
That day, Yahweh rescued Israel from the clutches of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptianslying dead on the sea-shore.30 And so the Lord freed Israel on that day from the hand of the Egyptians.
When Israel saw the mighty deed that Yahweh had performed against the Egyptians, the peoplerevered Yahweh and put their faith in Yahweh and in Moses, his servant.31 And they saw the Egyptians dead on the shore of the sea and the great hand that the Lord had exercised against them. And the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in Moses his servant.
