1 The king's command and decree came into force on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, Adar, andthe day on which the enemies of the Jews had hoped to crush them produced the very opposite effect: the Jewsit was who crushed their enemies.	1 No dia treze do duodécimo mês, que, como já dissemos, se chama Adar, quando estava destinada a matança de todos os Judeus e quando os seus inimigos estavam ansiosos do seu sangue, os Judeus, pelo contrário, começaram a ser mais fortes e a vingar-se dos seus adversários.
2 In their towns throughout the provinces of King Ahasuerus, the Jews assembled to strike at those whohad planned to injure them. No one resisted them, since the various peoples were now al afraid of them.	2 Juntaram-se em cada uma das cidades, aldeias e lugares, para atacarem os seus inimigos e perseguidores. Ninguém ousava resistir-lhes, porque o medo do seu poder tinha-se apoderado de todos os povos.
3 Provincial officers-of-state, satraps, governors and royal officials, al supported the Jews for fear ofMordecai.	3 Na verdade todos os chefes das províncias, os sátrapas, os governadores, os funcionários do rei, apoiaram os Judeus, por causa do temor que tinham de Mardoqueu,
4 And indeed Mordecai was a power in the palace and his fame was spreading through al the provinces;Mordecai was steadily growing more powerful.	4 o qual eles sabiam ser poderoso no palácio real, crescendo a fama do seu nome de dia para dia, voando pelas bocas de todos.
5 So the Jews struck down al their enemies with the sword, with resulting slaughter and destruction, andworked their wil on their opponents.	5 Fizeram, pois, os Judeus um grande estrago nos seus inimigos, mataram-nos, infligindo-lhes o mal que lhes apeteceu.
6 In the citadel of Susa alone, the Jews put to death and slaughtered five hundred men,	6 Em Susa mataram quinhentos homens, sem contar os dez fihos de Aman Agagita, inimigo dos Judeus, cujos nomes são estes;
7 notably Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,	7 Farsandata, Delfon, Esfata,
8 Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha,	8 Forata, Adalia, Aridata,
9 Parmashtha, Arisai, Aridai and Jezatha,	9 Fermesta, Arisai, e Aridai, Jezata.
10 the ten sons of Haman son of Hammedatha, the persecutor of the Jews. But they took no plunder.	10 Tendo-os matado, não quiseram os Judeus tocar no despojo de seus bens.
11 The number of those kil ed in the citadel of Susa was reported to the king that same day.	11 Foi logo referido ao rei o número dos que tinham sido mortos em Susa.
12 The king said to Queen Esther, 'In the citadel of Susa the Jews have killed five hundred men and alsothe ten sons of Haman. What must they have done in the other provinces of the realm? Tel me your request; Igrant it to you. Tel me what else you would like; it is yours for the asking.'	12 Ele disse à rainha: Na cidade de Susa mataram os Judeus quinhentos homens, afora os dez filhos de Aman ; quão grande cuidas tu que seja a mortandade que eles terão feito em todas as províncias? Que mais pedes, que queres tu que eu mande que se faça?
13 'If such is the king's pleasure,' Esther replied, 'let the Jews of Susa be al owed to enforce today'sdecree tomorrow as well. And as for the ten sons of Haman, let their bodies be hanged on the gal ows.'	13 E a respoudeu-lhe: Se assim apraz ao rei, seja dado poder aos Judeus de fazerem ainda amanhã em Susa, o que fizeram hoje, e os dez filhos de Aman sejam pendurados em patíbulos.
14 Whereupon, the king having given the order, the edict was promulgated in Susa and the ten sons ofHaman were hanged.	14 O rei ordenou que assim fosse feito, e logo foi afixado em Susa o edito, e os dez filhos de Aman foram pendurados.
15 Thus the Jews of Susa reassembled on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and kil ed threehundred men in the city. But they took no plunder.	15 Reunidos os Judeus no dia catorze do mês de Adar, foram mortos trezentos homens em Susa; porém não saquearam os seus bens.
16 The other Jews who lived in the king's provinces also assembled to defend their lives and ridthemselves of their enemies. They slaughtered seventy-five thousand of their opponents. But they took noplunder.	16 Da mesma sorte por todas as províncias que estavam sujeitas ao império do rei, puseram-se os Judeus em defesa das suas vidas, matando os seus inimigos e perseguidores, em tão grande número que chegaram os mortos a setenta e cinco mil homens. Todavia nenhum (judeu) pôs a mão em coisa alguma dos seus bens.
17 This was on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar. On the fourteenth day they rested and made it aday of feasting and gladness.	17 No dia treze do mês de Adar começou a matança em toda a parte, e cessou no dia catorze. Ordenaram que este dia fosse solene, e que se celebrasse por todos os séculos seguintes com banquetes, regozijos e festins.
18 But for the Jews of Susa, who had assembled on the thirteenth and fourteenth days, the fifteenth wasthe day they rested, making that a day of feasting and gladness.	18 Os que tinham executado a mortandade na cidade de Susa, empregaram nela os dias treze e catorze do mesmo mês; cessaram de matar no dia quinze. Por esta razão estabeleceram que se solenizasse o mesmo dia com banquetes e regozijos.
19 This is why Jewish country people, those who live in undefended vil ages, keep the fourteenth day ofthe month of Adar as a day of gladness, feasting and holiday-making, and the exchanging of presents with oneanother, (a) whereas for those who live in cities the day of rejoicing and exchanging presents with theirneighbours is the fifteenth day of Adar.	19 Os Judeus, porém, que habitavam nas cidades sem muros, e nas aldeias, destinaram o dia catorze do mês de Adar para os banquetes e regozijos, de modo que neste dia fazem grandes divertimentos e mandam uns aos outros alguma coisa dos seus banquetes e iguarias.
20 Mordecai committed these events to writing. Then he sent letters to all the Jews living in the provincesof King Ahasuerus, both near and far,	20 Mardoqueu escreveu todas estas coisas, e, resumindo-as numa carta, mandou-a aos Judeus que habitavam em todas as províncias do rei, tanto nas mais próximas, como nas mais remotas,
21 enjoining them to celebrate the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar every year,	21 a fim de que o dia catorze e o dia quinze do mês de Adar fossem para eles dias de festa, celebrados, todos os anos, com honras solenes,
22 as the days on which the Jews had rid themselves of their enemies, and the month in which theirsorrow had been turned into gladness, and mourning into a holiday. He therefore told them to keep these asdays of festivity and gladness when they were to exchange presents and make gifts to the poor.	22 porque nestes dias se vingaram os Judeus dos seus inimigos, e o seu luto e tristeza converteram-se em festa e alegria. Assim estes dias deviam ser de banquete e de regozijo, e neles deviam mandar uns aos outros porções das suas iguarias e distribuir donativos aos pobres.
23 Once having begun, the Jews continued observing these practices, Mordecai having written them anaccount	23 Os Judeus admitiram entre os seus ritos solenes tudo o que começaram a fazer naquele tempo, e que Mardoqueu na sua carta lhes ordenou que fizessem.
24 of how Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the persecutor of al the Jews, had plotted theirdestruction and had cast the pur, that is, the lot, for their overthrow and ruin;	24 Com efeito, Aman, filho de Amadati, da linhagem de Agag, inimigo e adversário dos Judeus, formara contra eles o mau projecto de os matar e de os extinguir, e lançara sobre isto o Pur, que significa sorte.
25 but how, when he went back to the king to ask him to order the hanging of Mordecai, the wickedscheme which he had devised against the Jews recoiled on his own head, and both he and his sons werehanged on the gallows;	25 Porém, tendo-se apresentado Ester ao rei, este ordenou, por escrito, que caísse sobre a cabeça do seu autor, o projecto perverso que Aman formara contra os Judeus, e que ele (Aman) e seus filhos fossem crucificados.
26 and that, hence, these days were cal ed Purim, from the word pur. And so, because of what waswritten in this letter, and because of what they had seen for themselves and of what had happened to them,	26 Desde aquele tempo, estes dias foram chamados Purim, isto é, das sortes, porque o Pur, ou a sorte, foi lançada na urna. Todas as coisas que aconteceram estão contidas no volume desta carta, isto é, deste livro.
27 the Jews wil ingly bound themselves, their descendants and al who should join them, to celebratethese two days without fail, in the manner prescribed and at the time appointed, year after year.	27 Em memória do que sofreram e da (feliz) mudança que depois houve, os Judeus obrigaram-se por si e pelos seus descendentes, e por todos os que quiseram agregar-se à sua religião, que a nenhum fosse licito passar sem solenidade estes dois dias que são indicados neste escrito, e se observam, em tempos determinados, pelos anos sucessivos.
28 Thus commemorated and celebrated from generation to generation, in every family, in every province,in every city, these days of Purim will never be abrogated among the Jews, nor will their memory perish fromtheir race.	28 Estes são dias que nunca serão esquecidos, e os quais todas as províncias de geração em geração celebrarão por toda a terra; não há cidade alguma onde os dias de Purim, isto é, das sortes, não sejam solenizados pelos Judeus e pela sua descendência, que está obrigada a estas cerimônias.
29 Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, wrote with ful authority to ratify this second letter,	29 A rainha Ester, filha de Abiail, e Mardoqueu, judeu, escreveram também uma segunda carta, para que com o maior cuidado ficasse estabelecido este dia solene para o futuro.
30 and sent letters to all the Jews of the hundred and twenty-seven provinces of the realm of Ahasuerus,in terms of peace and loyalty	30 Enviaram-na a todos os Judeus, que moravam nas cento e vinte e sete províncias do rei Assuero, para que tivessem paz e recebessem a verdade,
31 enjoining them to observe these days of Purim at the appointed time, as Mordecai the Jew hadrecommended, and in the manner prescribed for themselves and their descendants, with additional ordinancesfor fasts and lamentations.	31 observando os dias das sortes, e celebrando-os a seu tempo com grande alegria, como Mardoqueu e Ester tinham estabelecido; eles se obrigaram , por si e pela sua descendência, a guardar os jejuns, os clamores (a Deus), os dias das sortes,
32 The ordinance of Esther fixed the law of Purim, which was then recorded in a book.	32 tudo o que se contém na história deste livro, que se intitula Ester.
