1 The king's command and decree came into force on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, Adar, andthe day on which the enemies of the Jews had hoped to crush them produced the very opposite effect: the Jewsit was who crushed their enemies.	1 Così il tredici del dodicesimo mese, chiamato, come abbiam detto. Adar, nel giorno stesso in cui per tutti i Giudei era preparato lo sterminio, e i loro nemici anelavano al sangue, avvenne il contrario: i Giudei divenuti i più forti presero vendetta dei loro avversari.
2 In their towns throughout the provinces of King Ahasuerus, the Jews assembled to strike at those whohad planned to injure them. No one resisted them, since the various peoples were now al afraid of them.	2 In tutte le città, i borghi, i luoghi, s'adunaron per stendere la mano contro i loro nemici e persecutori; e nessuno ardi resistere, perchè il timore della loro grandezza aveva invaso tutti i popoli,
3 Provincial officers-of-state, satraps, governors and royal officials, al supported the Jews for fear ofMordecai.	3 ed anche i giudici delle provincie, i satrapi, i governatori, le dignità preposte ad ogni luogo e ad ogni opera esaltavano i Giudei per timore di Mardocheo,
4 And indeed Mordecai was a power in the palace and his fame was spreading through al the provinces;Mordecai was steadily growing more powerful.	4 che, come ben sapevano, era principe del palazzo, aveva molto potere, e la fama del suo nome cresceva ogni giorno e volava per le bocche di tutti.
5 So the Jews struck down al their enemies with the sword, with resulting slaughter and destruction, andworked their wil on their opponents.	5 Così i Giudei fecero grande strage dei loro nemici, e li uccisero, rendendo loro quello che avevan cercato di fare ad essi.
6 In the citadel of Susa alone, the Jews put to death and slaughtered five hundred men,	6 In Susa uccisero cinquecento uomini, oltre i dieci figli d'Aman l'Agagite, nemico dei Giudei, dei quali figli ecco i nomi:
7 notably Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,	7 Farsandata, Delfon, Esfata,
8 Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha,	8 Forata, Adalia, Aridata,
9 Parmashtha, Arisai, Aridai and Jezatha,	9 Fermesta, Arisai, Aridai, Iezata.
10 the ten sons of Haman son of Hammedatha, the persecutor of the Jews. But they took no plunder.	10 Ma, uccisi che li ebbero, non vollero toccare le loro sostanze.
11 The number of those kil ed in the citadel of Susa was reported to the king that same day.	11 Essendogli stato riferito subito il nome degli uccisi in Susa,
12 The king said to Queen Esther, 'In the citadel of Susa the Jews have killed five hundred men and alsothe ten sons of Haman. What must they have done in the other provinces of the realm? Tel me your request; Igrant it to you. Tel me what else you would like; it is yours for the asking.'	12 Ìl re disse alla regina: « Nella città di Susa i Giudei hanno ucciso cinquecento uomini, oltre i dieci figli d'Aman: pensa quanto sarà grande la strage in tutte le provincie. Che chiedi ancora? Che ordini che si faccia? »
13 'If such is the king's pleasure,' Esther replied, 'let the Jews of Susa be al owed to enforce today'sdecree tomorrow as well. And as for the ten sons of Haman, let their bodies be hanged on the gal ows.'	13 Ester rispose: « Se così piace al re, sia concesso ai Giudei di fare anche domani in Susa quello che oggi han fatto, e di appendere al patibolo i dieci figli di Aman ».
14 Whereupon, the king having given the order, the edict was promulgated in Susa and the ten sons ofHaman were hanged.	14 Il re comandò che così fosse fatto: affissò subito l'editto in Susa, i dieci figli d'Aman furono impiccati,
15 Thus the Jews of Susa reassembled on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and kil ed threehundred men in the city. But they took no plunder.	15 i Giudei, radunatisi ai quattordici del mese d'Adar, uccisero in Susa trecento uomini, senza però saccheggiarne i beni.
16 The other Jews who lived in the king's provinces also assembled to defend their lives and ridthemselves of their enemies. They slaughtered seventy-five thousand of their opponents. But they took noplunder.	16 In tutte le provincie soggette all'impero del re, i Giudei difesero la loro vita coll'uccisione dei loro nemici e persecutori, in modo che vi furono settantacinque mila uccisi; però nessun Giudeo toccò la roba loro.
17 This was on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar. On the fourteenth day they rested and made it aday of feasting and gladness.	17 Il giorno tredici del mese di Adar fu per tutti il primo giorno della strage e il quattordici fu l'ultimo, e fu stabilito di renderlo solenne in modo che per l'avvenire tutto quel tempo fosse passato nei festini, nella gioia e nei banchetti.
18 But for the Jews of Susa, who had assembled on the thirteenth and fourteenth days, the fifteenth wasthe day they rested, making that a day of feasting and gladness.	18 Però quelli che avevan fatta la strage nella città di Susa, avendo fatta la strage il tredici e il quattordici dello stesso mese, e cessato di ammazzare il quindici, stabilirono di solennizzare quest'ultimo giorno con banchetti e allegria.
19 This is why Jewish country people, those who live in undefended vil ages, keep the fourteenth day ofthe month of Adar as a day of gladness, feasting and holiday-making, and the exchanging of presents with oneanother, (a) whereas for those who live in cities the day of rejoicing and exchanging presents with theirneighbours is the fifteenth day of Adar.	19 Invece i Giudei che dimoravano nelle città senza mura e nei villaggi, destinarono alla gioia e ai conviti il quattordici del mese d'Adar: in quel giorno fan gran festa e si mandano scambievolmente porzioni di vivande e cibi.
20 Mordecai committed these events to writing. Then he sent letters to all the Jews living in the provincesof King Ahasuerus, both near and far,	20 Mardocheo, scritte tutte queste cose e chiusele in una lettera, le mandò ai Giudei che abitavano in tutte le provincie del re, vicine e lontane,
21 enjoining them to celebrate the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar every year,	21 affinchè accettassero il quattordici e il quindici d'Adar, come feste da celebrarsi ogni anno in perpetuo con solenni onori;
22 as the days on which the Jews had rid themselves of their enemies, and the month in which theirsorrow had been turned into gladness, and mourning into a holiday. He therefore told them to keep these asdays of festivity and gladness when they were to exchange presents and make gifts to the poor.	22 perchè in quei giorni i Giudei si vendicarono dei loro nemici, il lutto e la tristezza si mutarono in festa e in gioia, per questo tali giorni fossero giorni di banchetti e di letizia, e si mandassero scambievolmente porzioni di cibi e facessero dei donativi ai poveri.
23 Once having begun, the Jews continued observing these practices, Mordecai having written them anaccount	23 I Giudei accettarono come rito solenne tutto ciò che in quel tempo avevan cominciato a fare, e ciò che Mardocheo nelle sue lettere aveva loro ordinato di fare.
24 of how Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the persecutor of al the Jews, had plotted theirdestruction and had cast the pur, that is, the lot, for their overthrow and ruin;	24 Siccome Aman figlio di Amadati, della stirpe di Agag, nemico e avversario dei Giudei, ordì contro di essi una congiura per ucciderli e sterminarli, e gettò la Pur, che nella nostra lingua si traduce sorte,
25 but how, when he went back to the king to ask him to order the hanging of Mordecai, the wickedscheme which he had devised against the Jews recoiled on his own head, and both he and his sons werehanged on the gallows;	25 ma Ester si presentò al re, a chiedere che mediante lettera del re fossero resi vani i tentativi di Aman, e che il male da lui preparato agli Ebrei ricadesse sulla sua testa, e finì col far mettere in croce lui e i suoi figli,
26 and that, hence, these days were cal ed Purim, from the word pur. And so, because of what waswritten in this letter, and because of what they had seen for themselves and of what had happened to them,	26 da quel tempo quei giorni furono detti Purim, o delle sorti, perchè la Pur, ossia la sorte, fu gettata nell'urna. Tutto ciò che avvenne è contenuto in questo libro o lettera.
27 the Jews wil ingly bound themselves, their descendants and al who should join them, to celebratethese two days without fail, in the manner prescribed and at the time appointed, year after year.	27 In memoria di quanto patirono e della mutazione sopravvenuta, i Giudei obbligarono se stessi, i loro discendenti, e tutti quelli che volevano abbracciare la loro religione, a non passare senza festa questi due giorni indicati da questo scritto, nel tempo fissato, per tutti gli anni.
28 Thus commemorated and celebrated from generation to generation, in every family, in every province,in every city, these days of Purim will never be abrogated among the Jews, nor will their memory perish fromtheir race.	28 Questi son giorni che nessuna dimenticanza dovrà mai cancellare, e saran celebrati in ogni generazione, da tutte le provincie in tutto il mondo. Non v'è città in cui non siano festeggiati i giorni di Purim, o delle sorti, dai Giudei e dalla loro stirpe, che s'è obbligata a queste cerimonie.
29 Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, wrote with ful authority to ratify this second letter,	29 La regina Ester, figlia d'Abihail, e Mardocheo Giudeo scrissero anche un'altra lettera, affinchè con ogni zelo fosse stabilito pei tempi futuri questo giorno solenne.
30 and sent letters to all the Jews of the hundred and twenty-seven provinces of the realm of Ahasuerus,in terms of peace and loyalty	30 La mandarono a tutti i Giudei dimoranti nelle cento ventisette provincie del re Assuero, con auguri di pace e di attaccamento alla verità,
31 enjoining them to observe these days of Purim at the appointed time, as Mordecai the Jew hadrecommended, and in the manner prescribed for themselves and their descendants, with additional ordinancesfor fasts and lamentations.	31 affinchè osservassero i giorni delle sorti e li celebrassero con gioia nel tempo fissato, come avevano stabilito Mardocheo ed Ester, come essi e la loro discendenza s'erano impegnati d'osservarli, i giorni delle sorti, coi digiuni, i lamenti,
32 The ordinance of Esther fixed the law of Purim, which was then recorded in a book.	32 e tutto quello che si contiene nella storia di questo libro che porta il nome d'Ester.
