NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Holofernes, general-in-chief of the Assyrian army, received the intel igence that the Israelites werepreparing for war, that they had closed the mountain passes, fortified al the high peaks and laid obstructions inthe plains.	1 Se dio aviso a Holofernes, jefe supremo del ejército asirio, de que los israelitas se habían preparado para la guerra, que habían cerrado los pasos de las montañas, fortificado todas las alturas de los montes elevados y puesto obstáculos en las llanuras.
2 Holofernes was furious. He summoned al the princes of Moab, al the generals of Ammon and al thesatraps of the coastal regions.	2 Esto le irritó sobremanera, y mandó llamar a todos los jefes de Moab, a los generales de Ammón y a todos los sátrapas del litoral,
3 'Men of Canaan,' he said, 'tel me: what people is this that occupies the hill-country? What towns does itinhabit? How large is its army? What are the sources of its power and strength? Who is the king who rules it andcommands its army?	3 les dijo: «Hijos de Canaán, hacedme saber quién es este pueblo establecido en la montaña, qué ciudades habita, cuál es la importancia de su ejército y en qué estriba su poder y su fuerza, qué rey está a su frente y manda a sus soldados,
4 Why have they disdained to wait on me, as all the western peoples have?'	4 y por qué, a diferencia de todos los demás pueblos de occidente, han desdeñado salir a recibirme».
5 Achior, leader of al the Ammonites, replied, 'May my lord be pleased to listen to what your servant isgoing to say. I shall give you the facts about these mountain folk whose home lies close to you. You wil hear nolie from the mouth of your servant.	5 Entonces Ajior, general de todos los ammonitas, le dijo: «Escuche mi señor las palabras de la boca de tu siervo y te diré la verdad sobre este pueblo que habita esta montaña junto a la que te encuentras. No saldrá mentira de la boca de tu siervo.
6 These people are descended from the Chaldaeans.	6 Este pueblo desciende de los caldeos.
7 They once came to live in Mesopotamia, because they did not want to fol ow the gods of their ancestorswho lived in Chaldaea.	7 Al principio se fueron a residir a Mesopotamia, porque no quisieron seguir a los dioses de sus padres, que vivían en Caldea.
8 They abandoned the way of their ancestors to worship the God of heaven, the God they learnt toacknowledge. Banished from the presence of their own gods, they fled to Mesopotamia where they lived for along time.	8 Se apartaron del camino de sus padres y adoraron al Dios del Cielo, al Dios que habían reconocido. Por eso les arrojaron de la presencia de sus dioses y ellos se refugiaron en Mesopotamia, donde residieron por mucho tiempo.
9 When God told them to leave their home and set out for Canaan, they settled there and accumulatedgold and silver and great herds of cattle.	9 Su Dios les ordenó salir de su casa y marchar a la tierra de Canaán; se establecieron en ella y fueron colmados de oro, de plata y de gran cantidad de ganado.
10 Next, famine having overwhelmed the land of Canaan, they went down to Egypt where they stayed tilthey were well nourished. There they became a great multitude, a race beyond counting.	10 Bajaron después a Egipto, porque el hambre se extendió sobre la superficie de la tierra de Canaán, y permanecieron allí mientras tuvieron alimentos. Allí se hicieron muy numerosos, de modo que no se podía contar a los de su raza.
11 But the king of Egypt turned against them and exploited them by forcing them to make bricks; hedegraded them, reducing them to slavery.	11 Pero el rey de Egipto se alzó contra ellos y los engañó con el trabajo de los ladrillos, los humilló y los redujo a esclavitud.
12 They cried to their God, who struck the entire land of Egypt with incurable plagues, and the Egyptiansexpel ed them.	12 Clamaron a su Dios, que castigó la tierra de Egipto con plagas incurables. Los egipcios, entonces, los arrojaron lejos de sí.
13 God dried up the Red Sea before them	13 Dios secó a su paso el mar Rojo,
14 and led them forward by way of Sinai and Kadesh-Barnea. Having driven off all the inhabitants of thedesert,	14 y los condujo por el camino del Sinaí y Cadés Barnea. Arrojaron a todos los moradores del desierto,
15 they settled in the land of the Amorites and in their strength exterminated the entire population ofHeshbon. Then, having crossed the Jordan, they took possession of al the hil -country,	15 se establecieron en el país de los amorreos y aniquilaron por la fuerza a todos los jesbonitas. Pasaron el Jordán y se apoderaron de toda la montaña,
16 driving out the Canaanites before them and the Perizzites, Jebusites, Shechemites and all theGirgashites, and lived there for many years.	16 expulsaron ante ellos al cananeo, al perizita, al jebuseo, a los siquemitas y a todos los guirgasitas, y habitaron allí por mucho tiempo.
17 Al the while they did not sin before their God, prosperity was theirs, for they have a God who hateswickedness.	17 Mientras no pecaron contra su Dios vivieron en prosperidad, porque está en medio de ellos un Dios que odia la iniquidad.
18 But when they turned from the path he had marked out for them some were exterminated in a series ofbattles, others were taken captive to a foreign land. The Temple of their God was rased to the ground and theirtowns were seized by their enemies.	18 Pero cuando se apartaron del camino que les había impuesto, fueron duramente aniquilados por múltiples guerras, y deportados a tierra extraña; el Templo de su Dios fue arrasado y sus ciudades cayeron en poder de sus adversarios.
19 Then having turned once again to their God, they came back from the places to which they had beendispersed and scattered, regained possession of Jerusalem, where they have their Temple, and reoccupied thehil -country which had been left deserted.	19 Pero ahora, habiéndose convertido a su Dios, han vuelto de los diversos lugares en que habían sido dispersados, han tomado posesión de Jerusalén, donde se encuentra su santuario, y se han estabecido en la montaña que había quedado desierta.
20 So, now, master and lord, if this people has committed any fault, if they have sinned against their God,let us first be sure that they real y have this reason to fail, then advance and attack them.	20 Así pues, dueño y señor, si hay algún extravío en este pueblo, si han pecado contra su Dios, y vemos que hay en ellos alguna causa de ruina, subamos y ataquémoslos.
21 But if their nation is guiltless, my lord would do better to abstain, for fear that their Lord and God shouldprotect them. We should then become the laughing-stock of the whole world.'	21 Pero si no hay iniquidad en esa gente, que mi señor se detenga, no sea que su Dios y Señor les proteja con su escudo y nos hagamos nosotros la irrisión de toda la tierra».
22 When Achior had ended this speech, all the people crowding round the tent began protesting.Holofernes' own senior officers, as wel as al the coastal peoples and the Moabites, threatened to tear him limbfrom limb.	22 En acabando de decir Ajior todas estas palabras, se alzó un murmullo entre toda la gente que estaba en torno de la tienda, y los magnates de Holofernes y los habitantes de la costa y de Moab hablaron de despedazarle.
23 'Why should we be afraid of the Israelites? They are a weak and powerless people, quite unable tostand a stiff attack.	23 «¡No tememos a los israelitas! No son gente que tenga fuerza ni vigor para un encuentro violento.
24 Forward! Advance! Your army, Holofernes our master, wil swal ow them in one mouthful!'	24 ¡Subamos y serán un bocado para todo tu ejército, señor, Holofernes!»
