NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Thus all the work done by Solomon for the Temple of Yahweh was completed, and Solomon brought inthe gifts which his father David had consecrated; and he had the silver, the gold and all the utensils put into thetreasuries of the Temple of God.1 When all the work undertaken by Solomon for the temple of the LORD had been completed, he brought in the dedicated offerings of his father David, putting the silver, the gold and all the other articles in the treasuries of the house of God.
Solomon then assembled the elders of Israel to Jerusalem, al the tribal chiefs, the princes of thefamilies of Israel, to bring the ark of the covenant of Yahweh up from the City of David, that is, Zion.2 At Solomon's order the elders of Israel and all the leaders of the tribes, the princes of the Israelite ancestral houses, came to Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD'S covenant from the City of David (which is Zion).
Al the men of Israel assembled round the king at the time of the feast, that is, in the seventh month.3 All the men of Israel assembled before the king during the festival of the seventh month.
When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the Levites took up the ark;4 When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the Levites took up the ark,
they brought up the ark and the Tent of Meeting and al the sacred utensils which were in the Tent; thelevitical priests brought them up.5 and they carried the ark and the meeting tent with all the sacred vessels that were in the tent; it was the levitical priests who carried them.
King Solomon and the whole assembly of Israel present with him before the ark sacrificed countless, innumerable sheep and oxen.6 King Solomon and the entire community of Israel gathered about him before the ark were sacrificing sheep and oxen so numerous that they could not be counted or numbered.
The priests brought the ark of the covenant of Yahweh to its place, in the Debir of the Temple, that is, inthe Holy of Holies, under the wings of the winged creatures;7 The priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place beneath the wings of the cherubim in the sanctuary, the holy of holies of the temple.
for they spread their wings over the place where the ark stood, forming a canopy over the ark and itsshafts.8 The cherubim had their wings spread out over the place of the ark, sheltering the ark and its poles from above.
The shafts were so long, however, that the ends of the shafts of the ark could be seen in front of theHoly Place in front of the Debir, though they could not be seen from outside. They are still there today.9 The poles were long enough so that their ends could be seen from that part of the holy place nearest the sanctuary; however, they could not be seen beyond. The ark has remained there to this day.
There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets which Moses had placed in it at Horeb, whenYahweh made a covenant with the Israelites when they came out of Egypt.10 There was nothing in it but the two tablets which Moses put there on Horeb, the tablets of the covenant which the LORD made with the Israelites at their departure from Egypt.
Now when the priests came out of the Holy Place -- for al the priests present had sanctifiedthemselves regardless of the orders to which they belonged,11 When the priests came out of the holy place (all the priests who were present had purified themselves without reference to the rotation of their various classes),
and al the levitical singers, Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun with their sons and brothers, dressed inlinen, were standing to the east of the altar with cymbals, lyres and harps and with them one hundred and twentypriests blowing the trumpets,12 the Levites who were singers, all who belonged to Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun, and their sons and brothers, clothed in fine linen, with cymbals, harps and lyres, stood east of the altar, and with them a hundred and twenty priests blowing trumpets.
and the harmony between trumpeters and singers was such that only one melody could be heard asthey praised and gave thanks to Yahweh -- and the singing began, to the accompaniment of trumpets, cymbalsand musical instruments, and they praised Yahweh 'for he is good, for his faithful love is everlasting' -- then theTemple was fil ed with the cloud of the glory of Yahweh,13 When the trumpeters and singers were heard as a single voice praising and giving thanks to the LORD, and when they raised the sound of the trumpets, cymbals and other musical instruments to "give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever," the building of the LORD'S temple was filled with a cloud.
and because of the cloud the priests could not stay and perform their duties. For the glory of Yahwehfilled the Temple of God.14 The priests could not continue to minister because of the cloud, since the LORD'S glory filled the house of God.
