NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 When Rehoboam reached Jerusalem, he mustered a hundred and eighty thousand picked warriors ofthe House of Judah and Benjamin to fight Israel and win back the kingdom for Rehoboam.	1 Roboamo, giunto a Gerusa­lemme, convocò tutta la casa di Giuda e di Beniamino, cent'ottanta mila guerrieri scelti per combattere contro Israele e farlo tornare al suo regno.
2 But the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah, man of God,	2 Ma la parola del Signore fu indirizzata a Semeia uomo di Dio in questi termini:
3 'Say this to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to al Israel in Judah and Benjamin,	3 « Parla a Roboamo fi­glio di Salomone re di Giuda e a tutto Israele che è in Giuda e in Beniamino e di' loro:
4 "Yahweh says this: Do not go and make war on your brothers; let everyone go home, for this is mydoing." ' They obeyed Yahweh's command and went back instead of marching against Jeroboam.	4 Ecco quel che dice il Signore: Non dovete andare a combattere contro i vostri fratelli: torni ciascuno a casa sua, perchè questo è avvenuto per voler mio ». Essi, sentita la parola del Signore, se ne tornarono, e non si mossero contro Geroboamo.
5 Rehoboam, residing in Jerusalem, fortified a number of towns for the defence of Judah.	5 Roboamo abitò in Gerusalemme ed edificò delle città fortificate in Giuda.
6 He built Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,	6 Fortifìcò Betlehem, Etam, Tecue,
7 Beth-Zur, Soco, Adul am,	7 Betsur, Soco, Odollam,
8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,	8 Get, Maresa, Zif,
9 Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,	9 Aduram, Lachis, Azeca,
10 Zorah, Aijalon, Hebron, these being the fortified towns in Judah and Benjamin.	10 Saraa, Aialon, Ebron, che erano in Giuda e in Beniamino, città fortissime.
11 He equipped these fortresses, stationing commanders in them, with supplies of food, oil and wine,	11 Cinte che le ebbe di mura, vi pose dei governatori e dei magazzini di viveri, d'olio e di vino.
12 and shields and spears in each of these towns, making them extremely strong and thus retainingcontrol of Judah and Benjamin.	12 Ma tutte le città fece pure un arsenale di scudi e di lance. Fortificate queste città con grandissima cura, regnò sopra Giuda e Beniamino.
13 The priests and the Levites from all over Israel left their districts to put themselves at his disposal.	13 I sacerdoti e i leviti che erano in tutto Israele vennero a lui da tutte le loro dimore.
14 The Levites, indeed, abandoned their pasture lands and their holdings and came to Judah andJerusalem because Jeroboam and his sons had excluded them from the priesthood of Yahweh.	14 Abbandonando i sobborghi e le loro pos­sessioni, passarono in Giuda e in Gerusalemme; perchè Geroboamo coi suoi figli li aveva cacciati per non far loro esercitare il sacerdozio del Signore,
15 Jeroboam had appointed his own priests for the high places dedicated to the satyrs and calves whichhe had made.	15 che egli s'era creati dei sacerdoti degli alti luoghi e dei demoni e dei vitelli che aveva fatti.
16 And those members of al the tribes of Israel who were determined to seek Yahweh, God of Israel,fol owed those priests and Levites to Jerusalem to sacrifice to Yahweh, God of their ancestors.	16 Inoltre anche quelli di tutte le tribù d'I­sraele i quali avevano in cuore di seguire il Signore Dio d'Israele, venendo a Gerusalemme per immolare le loro vittime dinanzi al Si­gnore Dio dei loro padri,
17 These added strength to the kingdom of Judah and gave their support to Rehoboam son of Solomonfor three years. For three years they remained loyal to David and Solomon.	17 fortificarono il regno di Giuda e consolidarono Roboamo figlio di Salomone per tre anni: infatti camminarono nelle vie di David e di Salomone per tre anni.
18 Rehoboam married Mahalath daughter of Jerimoth, son of David, and of Abihail daughter of Eliabson of Jesse,	18 Roboamo prese in moglie Mahalat, figlia di Ierimot figlio di David, e anche Abihail figlia di Eliab figlio d'Isai,
19 and she bore him sons: Jeush, Shemariah and Zaham.	19 la quale gli partorì Iehus, Somoria e Zoom.
20 After her, he married Maacah daughter of Absalom, who bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza and Shelomith.	20 Dopo questa sposò anche Maaca figlia di Assalonne, la quale gli partorì Abia, Etai, Ziza e Salomit.
21 Rehoboam loved Maacah daughter of Absalom, more than all his other wives and concubines. Hehad in fact a total of eighteen wives and sixty concubines and fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.	21 Roboamo amò Maaca, figlia di Assalonne più di tutte le sue mogli e concubine. Egli aveva diciotto mogli e sessanta concubine, e generò ventotto figli e sessanta figlie.
22 Rehoboam named Abijah son of Maacah as head, hence leader, of his brothers, with a view tomaking him king,	22 Abia, figlio di Maaca, lo costituì capo, lo mise alla testa sopra tutti i suoi fratelli, perchè pensava di farlo re,
23 and acted wisely by distributing his sons throughout the territories of Judah and Benjamin, some ineach fortified town, where he provided plenty of food for them and found them wives.	23 essendo egli il più saggio e il più forte di tutti gli altri suoi figli (sparsi) in tutto il territorio di Giuda e di Beniamino, in tutte le città fortificate, dati loro i viveri in abbondanza e provveduti di molte mogli.
