NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
As regards his palace, Solomon spent thirteen years on it before the building was completed.1 Domum autem suam aedificavit Salomon tredecim annis et ad perfectum usque perduxit.
He built the House of the Forest of Lebanon, a hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide, and thirty cubitshigh, on four rows of cedar-wood pil ars,2 Aedificavit quoque domum Saltus Libani centum cubitorum longitudinis et quinquaginta cubitorum latitudinis et triginta cubitorum altitudinis super quattuor ordines columnarum cedrinarum, et ligna cedrina super columnas.
with lengths of cedar wood laid horizontal y on the pil ars. The upper part was panel ed with cedar rightdown to the tie-beams on forty-five pillars, fifteen in each row.3 Et erat tectum cedrinum in alto super tabulas quadraginta quinque, quae erant super columnas, quindecim in uno ordine,
There were three rows of window-frames, with the windows corresponding to one another at threelevels.4 et marginum tres ordines, fenestra iuxta fenestram tribus vicibus.
Al the doorways and windows were rectangular, with the windows corresponding to one another atthree levels.5 Ostia, id est postes, habebant quadruplicem marginem.
He also made the Colonnade, fifty cubits long and thirty cubits broad, with a cornice in front.6 Et porticum columnarum fecit quinquaginta cubitorum longitudinis et triginta cubitorum latitudinis, et alteram porticum in facie maioris porticus et columnas et cancellos ante eas.
He also made the Hal of the Throne where he used to dispense justice, that is, the Hal of Justice; it waspanel ed in cedar from floor to beams.7 Porticum quoque solii, in qua tribunal erat, fecit et texit lignis cedrinis a pavimento usque ad pavimentum.
His own living quarters, in the other court and inwards from the Hal , were of the same construction. Andthere was a house similar to this Hal for Pharaoh's daughter whom he had taken in marriage.8 Et domus, in qua habitabat, erat in altero atrio intro a porticu et simili opere. Domum quoque fecit filiae pharaonis, quam uxorem duxerat Salomon, tali opere quali et hanc porticum.
Al these buildings were of special stones cut to measure, trimmed on the inner and outer sides with thesaw, from the foundations to the coping-9 Omnia lapidibus pretiosis, qui ad normam quandam atque mensuram tam intrinsecus quam extrinsecus serrati erant, a fundamento usque ad summitatem parietum, et extrinsecus usque ad atrium maius.
the foundations were of special stones, huge stones, of ten and eight cubits,10 Fundamenta autem de lapidibus pretiosis, lapidibus magnis decem sive octo cubitorum.
and, above these, special stones, cut to measure, and cedar wood-11 Et desuper lapides pretiosi secundum mensuram secti et ligna cedrina.
and, on the outside, the great court had three courses of dressed stone round it and one course ofcedar beams; so also had the inner court of the Temple of Yahweh and the vestibule of the Temple.12 Et atrium maius in circuitu habebat tres ordines de lapidibus sectis et unum ordinem de dolata cedro; necnon et atrium domus Domini interius et porticus domus.
King Solomon sent for Hiram of Tyre;13 Misit quoque rex Salomon et tulit Hiram de Tyro,
he was the son of a widow of the tribe of Naphtali, but his father had been a Tyrian, a bronzeworker.He was a highly intel igent craftsman, skil ed in al types of bronzework. He came to King Solomon and did althis work for him.14 filium mulieris viduae de tribu Nephthali, patre Tyrio, artificem aerarium et plenum sapientia et intellegentia et doctrina ad faciendum omne opus ex aere. Qui, cum venisset ad regem Salomonem, fecit omne opus eius.
He cast the two bronze pillars; the height of one pil ar was eighteen cubits, and a cord twelve cubitslong gave the measurement of its girth; so also was the second pil ar.15 Et finxit duas columnas aereas, decem et octo cubitorum altitudinis columnam unam, et linea duodecim cubitorum ambiebat columnam, et grossitudo eius quattuor digitorum, et intrinsecus cava erat; sic et columna altera.
He made two capitals of cast bronze for the tops of the pil ars; the height of one capital was five cubits,and the height of the other five cubits.16 Duo quoque capitella fecit, quae ponerentur super capita columnarum, fusili aere; quinque cubitorum altitudinis capitellum unum et quinque cubitorum altitudinis capitellum alterum,
He made two sets of filigree to cover the moulding of the two capitals surmounting the pil ars, onefiligree for one capital and one filigree for the other.17 et serta quasi in modum texturae, fimbriae in modum catenarum sibi invicem miro opere contextarum in capitellis, quae erant super caput columnarum, septem in capitello uno et septem in capitello altero.
He also made pomegranates: two rows of them round each filigree,four hundred in al ,18 Et fecit malogranatorum duos ordines per circuitum super sertum unum, ut tegerent capitella, quae erant super summitatem columnarum; eodem modo fecit et capitello secundo.
The capitals surrounding the pil ars were lily-shaped.19 Capitella autem, quae erant super capita columnarum, quasi opere lilii fabricata erant in porticu, quattuor cubitorum.
applied on the raised moulding behind the filigree; there were two hundred pomegranates round onecapital and the same round the other capital.20 Et rursum alia capitella in summitate duarum columnarum etiam desuper, iuxta alvum, quae erat super sertum. Malogranatorum autem ducentorum duo ordines erant in circuitu capitelli primi et eodem modo in circuitu capitelli secundi.
He erected the pil ars in front of the portico of the Temple, he erected the right-hand pil ar and named itJachin; he erected the left-hand pil ar and named it Boaz.21 Et statuit duas columnas in porticum templi; cumque statuisset columnam dexteram, vocavit eam nomine Iachin, similiter erexit columnam sinistram et vocavit nomen eius Booz.
Thus, the work on the pillars was completed.22 Et super capita columnarum opus in modum lilii posuit; per fectumque est opus columnarum.
He made the Sea of cast metal, ten cubits from rim to rim, circular in shape and five cubits high; a cordthirty cubits long gave the measurement of its girth.23 Fecit quoque mare fusile decem cubitorum a labio usque ad labium, rotundum in circuitu, quinque cubitorum altitudo eius; et resticula triginta cubitorum cingebat illud per circuitum.
Under its rim and completely encircling it were gourds surrounding the Sea; over a length of thirtycubits the gourds were in two rows, of one and the same casting with the rest.24 Et scalptura colocynthidum subter labium circuibat illud, duo ordines scalpturarum fusilium in una fusione cum mari.
It rested on twelve oxen, three facing north, three facing west, three facing south, three facing east; onthese, their hindquarters al turned inwards, stood the Sea.25 Et stabat super duodecim boves, e quibus tres respiciebant ad aquilonem et tres ad occidentem et tres ad meridiem et tres ad orientem, et mare super eos desuper erat; quorum posteriora universa intrinsecus latitabant.
It was a hand's breadth in thickness, and its rim was shaped like the rim of a cup, lily-shaped. It couldhold two thousand measures.26 Grossitudo autem luteris habebat mensuram palmi, labiumque eius erat quasi labium calicis et folium repandi lilii; duo milia batos capiebat.
He made the ten bronze stands; each stand was four cubits long, four cubits wide, and three high.27 Et fecit bases decem aereas, quattuor cubitorum longitudinis bases singulas et quattuor cubitorum latitudinis et trium cubitorum altitudinis.
They were designed as fol ows; they had an undercarriage and crosspieces to the undercarriage.28 Hoc autem erat opus basium: limbos habebant, insuper et limbos inter columellas.
On the crosspieces of the undercarriage were lions and bul s and winged creatures, and on top of theundercarriage was a support; under the lions and oxen there were scrolls in the style of. . .29 Super limbos inter columellas erant leones et boves et cherubim, et super columellas similiter; supra et infra leones et boves erant coronae, opus malleatum.
Each stand had four bronze wheels with bronze axles; its four feet had shoulderings under the basin,and the shoulderings were cast. . .30 Et quattuor rotae per bases singulas et axes aerei, et quattuor pedes et quasi umeruli subter luterem fusiles, contra singulos coronae.
Its mouth measured one and a half cubits from where the shoulderings met to the top; its mouth wasround like a stand for a vessel, and on the mouth there were engravings too; the crosspieces, however, wererectangular and not round.31 Et os eius erat rotundum, opus basis, unius cubiti et dimidii; etiam in ore eius variae caelaturae erant, limbi autem eius erant quadrati, non rotundi.
The four wheels were under the crosspieces. The axles of the wheels were inside the stands; theheight of the wheels was one and a half cubits.32 Quattuor quoque rotae subter limbis erant, et fulcra rotarum cohaerebant basi; una rota habebat altitudinis cubitum et semis.
The wheels were designed like chariot wheels: their axles, felloes, spokes and naves had al been cast.33 Tales autem rotae erant, quales solent in curru fieri, et fulcra earum et canthi et radii et modioli, omnia fusilia.
There were four shoulderings at the four corners of each stand: the stand and the shoulderings were alof a piece.34 Nam et umeruli illi quattuor per singulos angulos basis unius ex ipsa basi fusiles et coniuncti erant.
At the top of the stand there was a support, circular in shape and half a cubit high; and on top of thestand there were lugs. The crosspieces were of a piece with the stand.35 In summitate autem basis erat quaedam rotunditas dimidii cubiti, et in summitate basis fulcra eius et limbi eius ex semetipsa.
On the bands he engraved winged creatures and lions and palm leaves. . . and scrol s right round.36 Scalpsit quoque in tabulatis illis, fulcris eius et super limbos eius cherubim et leones et palmas secundum vacuum singulorum, et coronas per circuitum.
He made the ten stands like this: the same casting and the same measurements for all.37 In hunc modum fecit decem bases, fusura una, et mensura scalpturaque consimili.
He made ten bronze basins; each basin held forty measures and each basin measured four cubits, onebasin to each of the ten stands.38 Fecit quoque decem luteres aereos; quadraginta batos capiebat luter unus, eratque quattuor cubitorum; singulosque luteres per singulas, id est decem bases posuit.
He arranged the stands, five on the right-hand side of the Temple, five on the left-hand side of theTemple; the Sea he placed on the right-hand side of the Temple, to the south east.39 Et constituit decem bases, quinque ad dexteram partem templi et quinque ad sinistram; mare autem posuit ad dexteram partem templi contra orientem ad meridiem.
Hiram made the ash containers, the scoops and the sprinkling bowls. He finished all the work that hedid for King Solomon on the Temple of Yahweh:40 Fecit quoque Hiram lebetes et vatilla et phialas et perfecit omne opus regi Salomoni in templo Domini;
Two pil ars; the two mouldings of the capitals surrounding the pil ars; the two sets of filigree to coverthe two mouldings of the capitals surmounting the pil ars;41 columnas duas et globos capitellorum super capita columnarum duos et serta duo, ut operirent duos globos, qui erant super capita columnarum;
the four hundred pomegranates for the two sets of filigree -- two rows of pomegranates for each set offiligree;42 et malogranata quadringenta in duobus sertis, duos versus malogranatorum in sertis singulis, ad operiendos globos capitellorum, qui erant super faciem columnarum;
the ten stands and the ten basins on the stands;43 et bases decem et luteres decem super bases
the one Sea and the twelve oxen beneath the Sea;44 et mare unum et boves duodecim subter mare;
the ash containers, the scoops, and sprinkling bowls. All these objects made by Hiram for KingSolomon for the Temple of Yahweh were of burnished bronze.45 et lebetes et vatilla et phialas. Omnia vasa, quae fecit Hiram regi Salomoni in domo Domini, de aere polito erant.
He made them by the process of sand casting, in the plain of the Jordan between Succoth andZarethan.46 In campestri regione Iordanis fudit ea rex in argillosa terra inter Succoth et Sarthan.
There were so many of them, that the weight of the bronze was never calculated.47 Et posuit Salomon omnia vasa; propter multitudinem autem nimiam ignorabatur pondus aeris.
Solomon made all the objects designed for the Temple of Yahweh: the golden altar and the gold tablefor the loaves of permanent offering;48 Fecitque Salomon omnia vasa in domo Domini: altare aureum et mensam, super quam ponerentur panes propositionis, auream;
the lamp-stands, five on the right and five on the left in front of the Debir, of pure gold; the floral work,the lamps, the tongs, of gold;49 et candelabra, quinque ad dexteram et quinque ad sinistram contra Dabir, ex auro puro, et florem et lucernas desuper aureas; et forcipes aureos
the basins, the snuffers, the sprinkling bowls, the incense ladles and the pans, of real gold; the doorpanels -- for the inner shrine -- that is, the Holy of Holies -- and for the Hekal, of gold.50 et pateras et cultros et phialas et sartagines et turibula de auro purissimo; et cardines ostiorum domus interioris Sancti sanctorum et ostiorum domus templi ex auro.
Thus al the work done by King Solomon for the Temple of Yahweh was completed, and Solomonbrought in the gifts which his father David had consecrated; and he had the silver, the gold and the utensils putinto the treasuries of the Temple of Yahweh.51 Et perfecit omne opus, quod faciebat Salomon in domo Domini, et intulit Salomon, quae sanctificaverat David pater suus, argentum et aurum et vasa, reposuitque in thesauris domus Domini.
