NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites came out of Egypt, in the fourth year ofSolomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, he began building the Temple ofYahweh.1 Factum est ergo quadringentesimo et octogesimo anno egressionis filiorum Israël de terra Ægypti, in anno quarto, mense Zio (ipse est mensis secundus), regni Salomonis super Israël, ædificari cœpit domus Domino.
The temple which King Solomon built for Yahweh was sixty cubits long, twenty cubits wide and twenty-five high.2 Domus autem quam ædificabat rex Salomon Domino, habebat sexaginta cubitos in longitudine, et viginti cubitos in latitudine, et triginta cubitos in altitudine.
The portico in front of the Hekal of the Temple was twenty cubits long across the width of the Templeand ten cubits wide along the length of the Temple.3 Et porticus erat ante templum viginti cubitorum longitudinis, juxta mensuram latitudinis templi : et habebat decem cubitos latitudinis ante faciem templi.
He made windows for the Temple with frames and latticework.4 Fecitque in templo fenestras obliquas.
He also built an annex against the Temple wal , right round the Hekal and Debir. He built lateral storeysal round;5 Et ædificavit super parietem templi tabulata per gyrum, in parietibus domus per circuitum templi et oraculi, et fecit latera in circuitu.
the lowest lateral storey was five cubits wide, the middle one six cubits, and the third seven cubits, for hehad made the outside of the Temple wal correspondingly stepped back al round, so that the annex was notattached to the Temple wal s.6 Tabulatum quod subter erat, quinque cubitos habebat latitudinis, et medium tabulatum sex cubitorum latitudinis, et tertium tabulatum septem habens cubitos latitudinis. Trabes autem posuit in domo per circuitum forinsecus, ut non hærerent muris templi.
(The building of the Temple was done with quarry -- dressed stone; no sound of hammer or pick or anyiron tool was to be heard in the Temple while it was being built.)7 Domus autem cum ædificaretur, de lapidibus dolatis atque perfectis ædificata est : et malleus, et securis, et omne ferramentum non sunt audita in domo cum ædificaretur.
The entrance to the lowest storey was at the right-hand corner of the Temple; access to the middlestorey was by a spiral staircase, and so from the middle storey to the third.8 Ostium lateris medii in parte erat domus dextræ : et per cochleam ascendebant in medium cœnaculum, et a medio in tertium.
Having finished building the Temple, he roofed the Temple with a coffered ceiling of cedar wood.9 Et ædificavit domum, et consummavit eam : texit quoque domum laquearibus cedrinis.
Round the outside of the Temple he then built the annex which was five cubits high and was joined tothe Temple by cedar-wood beams.10 Et ædificavit tabulatum super omnem domum quinque cubitis altitudinis, et operuit domum lignis cedrinis.
And the word of Yahweh came to Solomon,11 Et factus est sermo Domini ad Salomonem, dicens :
'With regard to this temple which you are now building, if you follow my statutes and obey myordinances and faithful y follow my commandments, I shal fulfil the promise which I made about you to yourfather David.12 Domus hæc, quam ædificas, si ambulaveris in præceptis meis, et judicia mea feceris, et custodieris omnia mandata mea, gradiens per ea, firmabo sermonem meum tibi, quem locutus sum ad David patrem tuum :
And I shal make my home among the Israelites and never forsake Israel my people.'13 et habitabo in medio filiorum Israël, et non derelinquam populum meum Israël.
Solomon finished building the Temple.14 Igitur ædificavit Salomon domum, et consummavit eam.
He lined the inside of the Temple wal s with panels of cedar wood-panelling them on the inside fromthe floor of the Temple to the beams of the ceiling -- and laid the floor of the Temple with juniper planks.15 Et ædificavit parietes domus intrinsecus tabulatis cedrinis : a pavimento domus usque ad summitatem parietum, et usque ad laquearia, operuit lignis cedrinis intrinsecus : et texit pavimentum domus tabulis abiegnis.
The twenty cubits measured from the end of the Temple he built of cedar planks from the floor to thebeams, and this part was reserved as the Debir, the Holy of Holies.16 Ædificavitque viginti cubitorum ad posteriorem partem templi tabulata cedrina, a pavimento usque ad superiora : et fecit interiorem domum oraculi in Sanctum sanctorum.
The Temple measured forty cubits -- the Hekal -- in front of the Debir.17 Porro quadraginta cubitorum erat ipsum templum pro foribus oraculi.
There was cedar wood round the inside of the Temple, ornamentally carved with gourds and rosettes;al was cedar wood, with no stone showing.18 Et cedro omnis domus intrinsecus vestiebatur, habens tornaturas et juncturas suas fabrefactas, et cælaturas eminentes : omnia cedrinis tabulis vestiebantur : nec omnino lapis apparere poterat in pariete.
In the inner part of the Temple he designed a Debir, to contain the ark of the covenant of Yahweh.19 Oraculum autem in medio domus, in interiori parte fecerat, ut poneret ibi arcam fœderis Domini.
The Debir was twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and twenty high, and he overlaid it on the insidewith pure gold. He made an altar of cedar wood20 Porro oraculum habebat viginti cubitos longitudinis, et viginti cubitos latitudinis, et viginti cubitos altitudinis : et operuit illud atque vestivit auro purissimo : sed et altare vestivit cedro.
in front of the Debir and overlaid it with gold.21 Domum quoque ante oraculum operuit auro purissimo, et affixit laminas clavis aureis.
He overlaid the whole Temple with gold, the whole Temple entirely.22 Nihilque erat in templo quod non auro tegeretur : sed et totum altare oraculi texit auro.
In the Debir he made two great winged creatures of wild-olive wood. . .It was ten cubits high.23 Et fecit in oraculo duos cherubim de lignis olivarum, decem cubitorum altitudinis.
One winged creature's wing was five cubits long and the other wing five cubits: ten cubits from wing tipto wing tip.24 Quinque cubitorum ala cherub una, et quinque cubitorum ala cherub altera : id est, decem cubitos habentes, a summitate alæ unius usque ad alæ alterius summitatem.
The other winged creature also measured ten cubits; both had the same measurements and the sameshape.25 Decem quoque cubitorum erat cherub secundus : in mensura pari, et opus unum erat in duobus cherubim,
The height of one was the same as the other's.26 id est, altitudinem habebat unus cherub decem cubitorum, et similiter cherub secundus.
He placed them in the middle of the inner chamber; their wings were spread out so that the wing of onetouched one of the wal s and the wing of the other touched the other wall, while their wings met in the middle ofthe chamber wing to wing.27 Posuitque cherubim in medio templi interioris : extendebant autem alas suas cherubim, et tangebat ala una parietem, et ala cherub secundi tangebat parietem alterum : alæ autem alteræ in media parte templi se invicem contingebant.
And he overlaid them with gold.28 Texit quoque cherubim auro.
Al round the Temple wal s he carved figures of winged creatures, palm trees and rosettes, both insideand outside.29 Et omnes parietes templi per circuitum sculpsit variis cælaturis et torno : et fecit in eis cherubim, et palmas, et picturas varias, quasi prominentes de pariete, et egredientes.
He overlaid the floor of the Temple with gold, both inside and outside.30 Sed et pavimentum domus texit auro intrinsecus et extrinsecus.
He made the door of the Debir with uprights of wild-olive wood, and door jambs with five indentedsections,31 Et in ingressu oraculi fecit ostiola de lignis olivarum, postesque angulorum quinque.
and the two leaves of wild-olive wood. He carved figures of great winged creatures, palm trees androsettes which he overlaid with gold, and he gilded winged creatures and palm trees.32 Et duo ostia de lignis olivarum : et sculpsit in eis picturam cherubim, et palmarum species, et anaglypha valde prominentia : et texit ea auro, et operuit tam cherubim quam palmas, et cetera, auro.
Similarly, he made uprights of wild-olive wood for the door of the Hekal, and door jambs with fourindented sections,33 Fecitque in introitu templi postes de lignis olivarum quadrangulatos,
and the two leaves of juniper: one leaf had two ribs binding it, and the other had two ribs binding it.34 et duo ostia de lignis abiegnis altrinsecus : et utrumque ostium duplex erat, et se invicem tenens aperiebatur.
He carved winged creatures, palm trees and rosettes, which he overlaid with gold laid evenly over thecarvings.35 Et sculpsit cherubim, et palmas, et cælaturas valde eminentes : operuitque omnia laminis aureis opere quadro ad regulam.
He built the wal of the inner court in three courses of dressed stone and one course of cedar beams.36 Et ædificavit atrium interius tribus ordinibus lapidum politorum, et uno ordine lignorum cedri.
In the fourth year, in the month of Ziv, the foundations of the Temple were laid;37 Anno quarto fundata est domus Domini in mense Zio :
in the eleventh year, in the month of Bul -- that is, the eighth month -- the Temple was completedexactly as it had been planned and designed. Solomon took seven years to build it.38 et in anno undecimo, mense Bul (ipse est mensis octavus), perfecta est domus in omni opere suo, et in universis utensilibus suis : ædificavitque eam annis septem.
