NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Rachel, seeing that she herself gave Jacob no children, became jealous of her sister. And she said toJacob, 'Give me children, or I shal die!'1 Cernens autem Rachel quod infecunda esset, invidit sorori suæ, et ait marito suo : Da mihi liberos, alioquin moriar.
This made Jacob angry with Rachel, and he retorted, 'Am I in the position of God, who has denied youmotherhood?'2 Cui iratus respondit Jacob : Num pro Deo ego sum, qui privavit te fructu ventris tui ?
So she said, 'Here is my slave-girl, Bilhah. Sleep with her and let her give birth on my knees; throughher, then, I too shal have children!'3 At illa : Habeo, inquit, famulam Balam : ingredere ad illam, ut pariat super genua mea, et habeam ex illa filios.
So she gave him her slave-girl Bilhah as concubine. Jacob slept with her,4 Deditque illi Balam in conjugium : quæ,
and Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a son by Jacob.5 ingresso ad se viro, concepit, et peperit filium.
Then Rachel said, 'God has done me justice; yes, he has heard my prayer and given me a son.'Accordingly she named him Dan.6 Dixitque Rachel : Judicavit mihi Dominus, et exaudivit vocem meam, dans mihi filium, et idcirco appellavit nomen ejus Dan.
Again Rachel's slave-girl Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a second son by Jacob.7 Rursumque Bala concipiens, peperit alterum,
Then Rachel said, 'I have fought a fateful battle with my sister, and I have won!' So she named himNaphtali.8 pro quo ait Rachel : Comparavit me Deus cum sorore mea, et invalui : vocavitque eum Nephthali.
Now Leah, seeing that she had ceased to bear children, took her slave-girl Zilpah and gave her toJacob as concubine.9 Sentiens Lia quod parere desiisset, Zelpham ancillam suam marito tradidit.
So Leah's slave-girl Zilpah gave birth to a son by Jacob.10 Qua post conceptum edente filium,
Then Leah exclaimed, 'What good fortune!' So she named him Gad.11 dixit : Feliciter, et idcirco vocavit nomen ejus Gad.
Leah's slave-girl Zilpah gave birth to a second son by Jacob.12 Peperit quoque Zelpha alterum.
Then Leah said, 'What blessedness! Women will cal me blessed!' So she named him Asher.13 Dixitque Lia : Hoc pro beatitudine mea : beatam quippe me dicent mulieres : propterea appellavit eum Aser.
One day, at the time of the wheat harvest, Reuben found some mandrakes in the field and broughtthem to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, 'Please give me some of your son's mandrakes.'14 Egressus autem Ruben tempore messis triticeæ in agrum, reperit mandragoras, quas matri Liæ detulit. Dixitque Rachel : Da mihi partem de mandragoris filii tui.
Leah replied, 'Is it not enough to have taken my husband, without your taking my son's mandrakesas well?' So Rachel said, 'Very wel , he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son's mandrakes.'15 Illa respondit : Parumne tibi videtur quod præripueris maritum mihi, nisi etiam mandragoras filii mei tuleris ? Ait Rachel : Dormiat tecum hac nocte pro mandragoris filii tui.
When Jacob came back from the fields that night, Leah went out to meet him and said, 'You mustcome to me, for I have hired you at the price of my son's mandrakes.' So he slept with her that night.16 Redeuntique ad vesperam Jacob de agro, egressa est in occursum ejus Lia, et Ad me, inquit, intrabis : quia mercede conduxi te pro mandragoris filii mei. Dormivitque cum ea nocte illa.
God heard Leah, and she conceived and gave birth to a fifth son by Jacob.17 Et exaudivit Deus preces ejus, concepitque et peperit filium quintum,
Then Leah said, 'God has given me my reward for giving my slave-girl to my husband.' So shenamed him Issachar.18 et ait : Dedit Deus mercedem mihi, quia dedi ancillam meam viro meo : appellavitque nomen ejus Issachar.
Again Leah conceived and gave birth to a sixth son by Jacob,19 Rursum Lia concipiens, peperit sextum filium,
and said, 'God has given me a fine gift; now my husband wil bring me presents, for I have borne himsix sons.' So she named him Zebulun.20 et ait : Dotavit me Deus dote bona : etiam hac vice mecum erit maritus meus, eo quod genuerim ei sex filios : et idcirco appellavit nomen ejus Zabulon.
Later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.21 Post quem peperit filiam, nomine Dinam.
Then God remembered Rachel; he heard her and opened her womb.22 Recordatus quoque Dominus Rachelis, exaudivit eam, et aperuit vulvam ejus.
She conceived and gave birth to a son, and said, 'God has taken away my disgrace!'23 Quæ concepit, et peperit filium, dicens : Abstulit Deus opprobrium meum.
She named him Joseph, saying, 'May Yahweh add another son for me!'24 Et vocavit nomen ejus Joseph, dicens : Addat mihi Dominus filium alterum.
When Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, 'Release me and let me go home tomy own country.25 Nato autem Joseph, dixit Jacob socero suo : Dimitte me ut revertar in patriam, et ad terram meam.
Give me my wives for whom I have worked for you, and my children, and let me go. You are welaware how long I have worked for you.'26 Da mihi uxores, et liberos meos, pro quibus servivi tibi, ut abeam : tu nosti servitutem qua servivi tibi.
Laban replied, 'If I have done what pleases you . . . I have learnt by divination that Yahweh hasblessed me because of you.27 Ait illi Laban : Inveniam gratiam in conspectu tuo, experimento didici, quia benedixerit mihi Deus propter te :
So name your wages,' he added, 'and I wil pay.'28 constitue mercedem tuam quam dem tibi.
He replied, 'You know how hard I have worked for you, and how your stock has fared in my charge.29 At ille respondit : Tu nosti quomodo servierim tibi, et quanta in manibus meis fuerit possessio tua.
The little you had before I came has increased enormously, and Yahweh has blessed you wherever Ihave been. When am I to provide for my own household too?'30 Modicum habuisti antequam venirem ad te, et nunc dives effectus es : benedixitque tibi Dominus ad introitum meum. Justum est igitur ut aliquando provideam etiam domui meæ.
Laban said, 'How much am I to pay you?' Jacob replied, 'You need not pay me anything. I shallchange my mind and go on tending your flock, if you do this one thing for me.31 Dixitque Laban : Quid tibi dabo ? At ille ait : Nihil volo : sed si feceris quod postulo, iterum pascam, et custodiam pecora tua.
'Go through your entire flock today and remove every black animal among the sheep, and everyspeckled or spotted one among the goats. These wil be my wages,32 Gyra omnes greges tuos, et separa cunctas oves varias, et sparso vellere ; quodcumque furvum, et maculosum, variumque fuerit, tam in ovibus quam in capris, erit merces mea.
and my uprightness wil answer for me later: when you come to check my wages, every goat I havethat is not speckled or spotted, and every sheep that is not black will count as stolen by me.'33 Respondebitque mihi cras justitia mea, quando placiti tempus advenerit coram te : et omnia quæ non fuerint varia, et maculosa, et furva, tam in ovibus quam in capris, furti me arguent.
Laban replied, 'Good, just as you say.'34 Dixitque Laban : Gratum habeo quod petis.
That same day he removed the striped and speckled he-goats and all the spotted and speckled she-goats, every one that had white on it, and al the black sheep, and entrusted these to his sons.35 Et separavit in die illa capras, et oves, et hircos, et arietes varios, atque maculosos : cunctum autem gregem unicolorem, id est albi et nigri velleris, tradidit in manu filiorum suorum.
Then he put a three days' journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob grazed the rest ofLaban's flock.36 Et posuit spatium itineris trium dierum inter se et generum, qui pascebat reliquos greges ejus.
Jacob then got fresh shoots from poplar, almond and plane trees, and peeled them in white strips, laying bare the white part of the shoots.37 Tollens ergo Jacob virgas populeas virides, et amygdalinas, et ex platanis, ex parte decorticavit eas : detractisque corticibus, in his, quæ spoliata fuerant, candor apparuit : illa vero quæ integra fuerant, viridia permanserunt : atque in hunc modum color effectus est varius.
He set up the shoots he had peeled in front of the animals, in the troughs, in the water-holes wherethe animals came to drink. Since they mated when they came to drink,38 Posuitque eas in canalibus, ubi effundebatur aqua : ut cum venissent greges ad bibendum, ante oculos haberent virgas, et in aspectu earum conciperent.
the goats thus mated in front of the shoots and so the goats produced striped, spotted and speckledyoung.39 Factumque est ut in ipso calore coitus, oves intuerentur virgas, et parerent maculosa, et varia, et diverso colore respersa.
The ewes, on the other hand, Jacob kept apart and made these face whatever was striped or blackin Laban's flock. Thus he built up droves of his own which he did not put with Laban's flocks.40 Divisitque gregem Jacob, et posuit virgas in canalibus ante oculos arietum : erant autem alba et nigra quæque, Laban ; cetera vero, Jacob, separatis inter se gregibus.
Furthermore, whenever the sturdier animals were mating, Jacob put the shoots where the animalscould see them, in the troughs, so that they would mate in front of the shoots.41 Igitur quando primo tempore ascendebantur oves, ponebat Jacob virgas in canalibus aquarum ante oculos arietum et ovium, ut in earum contemplatione conciperent :
But when the animals were feeble, he did not put them there; so Laban got the feeble, and Jacob thesturdy.42 quando vero serotina admissura erat, et conceptus extremus, non ponebat eas. Factaque sunt ea quæ erant serotina, Laban : et quæ primi temporis, Jacob.
Thus the man grew extremely rich, and came to own large flocks, men and women slaves, camelsand donkeys.43 Ditatusque est homo ultra modum, et habuit greges multos, ancillas et servos, camelos et asinos.
