Genesis 30

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Rachel, seeing that she herself gave Jacob no children, became jealous of her sister. And she said toJacob, 'Give me children, or I shal die!'	1 Rachel, voyant qu'elle-même ne donnait pas d'enfants à Jacob, devint jalouse de sa sœur et elle dità Jacob: "Fais-moi avoir aussi des enfants, ou je meurs!"
2 This made Jacob angry with Rachel, and he retorted, 'Am I in the position of God, who has denied youmotherhood?'	2 Jacob s'emporta contre Rachel et dit: "Est-ce que je tiens la place de Dieu, qui t'a refusé lamaternité?"
3 So she said, 'Here is my slave-girl, Bilhah. Sleep with her and let her give birth on my knees; throughher, then, I too shal have children!'	3 3et mon honnêteté portera témoignage pour moi dans la suite: quand tu viendras vérifier monsalaire, tout ce qui ne sera pas moucheté ou tacheté parmi les chèvres, ou noir parmi les moutons, sera chez moiun vol."
4 So she gave him her slave-girl Bilhah as concubine. Jacob slept with her,	4 Elle lui donna donc pour femme sa servante Bilha et Jacob s'unit à celle-ci.
5 and Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a son by Jacob.
6 Then Rachel said, 'God has done me justice; yes, he has heard my prayer and given me a son.'Accordingly she named him Dan.
7 Again Rachel's slave-girl Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a second son by Jacob.
8 Then Rachel said, 'I have fought a fateful battle with my sister, and I have won!' So she named himNaphtali.
9 Now Leah, seeing that she had ceased to bear children, took her slave-girl Zilpah and gave her toJacob as concubine.
10 So Leah's slave-girl Zilpah gave birth to a son by Jacob.	10 Zilpa, la servante de Léa, enfanta à Jacob un fils.
11 Then Leah exclaimed, 'What good fortune!' So she named him Gad.	11 Léa dit: "Par bonne fortune!" et elle l'appela Gad.
12 Leah's slave-girl Zilpah gave birth to a second son by Jacob.	12 Zilpa, la servante de Léa, enfanta à Jacob un second fils.
13 Then Leah said, 'What blessedness! Women will cal me blessed!' So she named him Asher.	13 Léa dit: "Pour ma félicité! car les femmes me féliciteront"; et l'appela Asher.
14 One day, at the time of the wheat harvest, Reuben found some mandrakes in the field and broughtthem to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, 'Please give me some of your son's mandrakes.'	14 Etant sorti au temps de la moisson des blés, Ruben trouva dans les champs des pommes d'amour,qu'il apporta à sa mère, Léa. Rachel dit à Léa: "Donne-moi, s'il te plaît, des pommes d'amour de ton fils",
15 Leah replied, 'Is it not enough to have taken my husband, without your taking my son's mandrakesas well?' So Rachel said, 'Very wel , he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son's mandrakes.'	15 mais Léa lui répondit: "N'est-ce donc pas assez que tu m'aies pris mon mari, pour que tu prennesaussi les pommes d'amour de mon fils?" Rachel reprit: "Eh bien, qu'il couche avec toi cette nuit, en échange despommes d'amour de ton fils."
16 When Jacob came back from the fields that night, Leah went out to meet him and said, 'You mustcome to me, for I have hired you at the price of my son's mandrakes.' So he slept with her that night.	16 Lorsque Jacob revint des champs le soir, Léa sortit à sa rencontre et lui dit: "Il faut que tu viennesvers moi, car je t'ai pris à gages pour les pommes d'amour de mon fils", et il coucha avec elle cette nuit-là.
17 God heard Leah, and she conceived and gave birth to a fifth son by Jacob.	17 Dieu exauça Léa, elle conçut et elle enfanta à Jacob un cinquième fils;
18 Then Leah said, 'God has given me my reward for giving my slave-girl to my husband.' So shenamed him Issachar.	18 Léa dit: "Dieu m'a donné mon salaire, pour avoir donné ma servante à mon mari"; et elle l'appelaIssachar.
19 Again Leah conceived and gave birth to a sixth son by Jacob,	19 Léa conçut encore et elle enfanta à Jacob un sixième fils.
20 and said, 'God has given me a fine gift; now my husband wil bring me presents, for I have borne himsix sons.' So she named him Zebulun.	20 Léa dit: "Dieu m'a fait un beau présent, cette fois mon mari m'honorera, car je lui ai donné sixfils"; et elle l'appela Zabulon.
21 Later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.	21 Ensuite elle mit au monde une fille et elle l'appela Dina.
22 Then God remembered Rachel; he heard her and opened her womb.	22 Alors Dieu se souvint de Rachel, il l'exauça et la rendit féconde.
23 She conceived and gave birth to a son, and said, 'God has taken away my disgrace!'	23 Elle conçut et elle enfanta un fils; elle dit: "Dieu a enlevé ma honte";
24 She named him Joseph, saying, 'May Yahweh add another son for me!'	24 et elle l'appela Joseph, disant: "Que Yahvé m'ajoute un autre fils!"
25 When Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, 'Release me and let me go home tomy own country.	25 Lorsque Rachel eut enfanté Joseph, Jacob dit à Laban: "Laisse-moi partir, que j'aille chez moi,dans mon pays.
26 Give me my wives for whom I have worked for you, and my children, and let me go. You are welaware how long I have worked for you.'	26 Donne-moi mes femmes, pour lesquelles je t'ai servi, et mes enfants, et que je m'en aille. Tu saisbien quel service j'ai accompli pour toi."
27 Laban replied, 'If I have done what pleases you . . . I have learnt by divination that Yahweh hasblessed me because of you.	27 Laban lui dit: "Si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux... J'ai appris par les présages que Yahvé m'avait bénià cause de toi.
28 So name your wages,' he added, 'and I wil pay.'	28 Aussi, ajouta-t-il, fixe-moi ton salaire et je te payerai."
29 He replied, 'You know how hard I have worked for you, and how your stock has fared in my charge.	29 Il lui répondit: "Tu sais bien de quelle façon je t'ai servi et ce que ton bien est devenu avec moi.
30 The little you had before I came has increased enormously, and Yahweh has blessed you wherever Ihave been. When am I to provide for my own household too?'	30 Le peu que tu avais avant moi s'est accru énormément, et Yahvé t'a béni sur mes pas. Maintenant,quand travaillerai-je aussi pour ma maison?"
31 Laban said, 'How much am I to pay you?' Jacob replied, 'You need not pay me anything. I shallchange my mind and go on tending your flock, if you do this one thing for me.	31 Laban reprit: "Que faut-il te payer?" Jacob répondit: "Tu n'auras rien à me payer: si tu fais pourmoi ce que je vais dire, je reprendrai la conduite de ton troupeau.
32 'Go through your entire flock today and remove every black animal among the sheep, and everyspeckled or spotted one among the goats. These wil be my wages,	32 "Je passerai aujourd'hui dans tout ton troupeau. Sépares-en tout animal noir parmi les moutons etce qui est tacheté ou moucheté parmi les chèvres. Tel sera mon salaire,
33 and my uprightness wil answer for me later: when you come to check my wages, every goat I havethat is not speckled or spotted, and every sheep that is not black will count as stolen by me.'
34 Laban replied, 'Good, just as you say.'	34 Laban dit: "C'est bien; qu'il en soit comme tu as dit."
35 That same day he removed the striped and speckled he-goats and all the spotted and speckled she-goats, every one that had white on it, and al the black sheep, and entrusted these to his sons.	35 Ce jour-là, il mit à part les boucs rayés et tachetés, toutes les chèvres mouchetées et tachetées,tout ce qui avait du blanc, et tout ce qui était noir parmi les moutons. Il les confia à ses fils
36 Then he put a three days' journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob grazed the rest ofLaban's flock.	36 et il mit trois jours de chemin entre lui et Jacob. Et Jacob faisait paître le reste du bétail de Laban.
37 Jacob then got fresh shoots from poplar, almond and plane trees, and peeled them in white strips,laying bare the white part of the shoots.	37 Jacob prit des baguettes fraîches de peuplier, d'amandier et de platane et il les écorça de bandesblanches, mettant à nu l'aubier qui était sur les baguettes.
38 He set up the shoots he had peeled in front of the animals, in the troughs, in the water-holes wherethe animals came to drink. Since they mated when they came to drink,	38 Il mit les baguettes qu'il avait écorcées en face des bêtes dans les auges, dans les abreuvoirs où lesbêtes venaient boire, et les bêtes s'accouplaient en venant boire.
39 the goats thus mated in front of the shoots and so the goats produced striped, spotted and speckledyoung.	39 Elles s'accouplèrent donc devant les baguettes et elles mirent bas des petits rayés, mouchetés ettachetés.
40 The ewes, on the other hand, Jacob kept apart and made these face whatever was striped or blackin Laban's flock. Thus he built up droves of his own which he did not put with Laban's flocks.	40 Quant aux moutons, Jacob les mit à part et il tourna les bêtes vers ce qui était rayé et tout ce quiétait noir dans le troupeau de Laban. Ainsi il se constitua des troupeaux à lui, qu'il ne mit pas avec les troupeauxde Laban.
41 Furthermore, whenever the sturdier animals were mating, Jacob put the shoots where the animalscould see them, in the troughs, so that they would mate in front of the shoots.	41 De plus, chaque fois que s'accouplaient les bêtes robustes, Jacob mettait les baguettes devant lesyeux des bêtes dans les auges, pour qu'elles s'accouplent devant les baguettes.
42 But when the animals were feeble, he did not put them there; so Laban got the feeble, and Jacob thesturdy.	42 Quand les bêtes étaient chétives, il ne les mettait pas, et ainsi ce qui était chétif fut pour Laban, cequi était robuste fut pour Jacob.
43 Thus the man grew extremely rich, and came to own large flocks, men and women slaves, camelsand donkeys.	43 L'homme s'enrichit énormément et il eut du bétail en quantité, des servantes et des serviteurs, deschameaux et des ânes.
