NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Rachel, seeing that she herself gave Jacob no children, became jealous of her sister. And she said toJacob, 'Give me children, or I shal die!'1 Cernens autem Rachel quod infecunda esset, invidit sorori et ait marito suo: “ Da mihi liberos, alioquin moriar ”.
This made Jacob angry with Rachel, and he retorted, 'Am I in the position of God, who has denied youmotherhood?'2 Cui iratus respondit Iacob: “ Num pro Deo ego sum, qui privavit te fructu ventris? ”.
So she said, 'Here is my slave-girl, Bilhah. Sleep with her and let her give birth on my knees; throughher, then, I too shal have children!'3 At illa: “ Ecce, inquit, famula mea Bilha; ingredere ad illam, ut pariat super genua mea, et habeam ex illa et ego filios ”.
So she gave him her slave-girl Bilhah as concubine. Jacob slept with her,4 Deditque illi Bilham famulam suam in coniugium. Quae,
and Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a son by Jacob.5 ingresso ad se Iacob, concepit et peperit filium.
Then Rachel said, 'God has done me justice; yes, he has heard my prayer and given me a son.'Accordingly she named him Dan.6 Dixitque Rachel: “ Iudicavit mihi Deus et exaudivit vocem quoque meam dans mihi filium ”; et idcirco appellavit nomen illius Dan.
Again Rachel's slave-girl Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a second son by Jacob.7 Rursumque Bilha famula Rachel concepit et peperit Iacob alterum filium, et
Then Rachel said, 'I have fought a fateful battle with my sister, and I have won!' So she named himNaphtali.8 ait Rachel: “ Certamina Dei certavi cum sorore mea et invalui ”; vocavitque eum Nephthali.
Now Leah, seeing that she had ceased to bear children, took her slave-girl Zilpah and gave her toJacob as concubine.9 Sentiens Lia quod parere desisset, sumpsit Zelpham ancillam suam et tradidit eam Iacob in uxorem.
So Leah's slave-girl Zilpah gave birth to a son by Jacob.10 Quae peperit Iacob filium.
Then Leah exclaimed, 'What good fortune!' So she named him Gad.11 Dixitque Lia: “ Feliciter! ”; et idcirco vocavit nomen eius Gad.
Leah's slave-girl Zilpah gave birth to a second son by Jacob.12 Peperit quoque Zelpha ancilla Liae Iacob alterum filium.
Then Leah said, 'What blessedness! Women will cal me blessed!' So she named him Asher.13 Dixitque Lia: “ Pro beatitudine mea! Beatam quippe me dicent mulieres ”; propterea appellavit eum Aser.
One day, at the time of the wheat harvest, Reuben found some mandrakes in the field and broughtthem to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, 'Please give me some of your son's mandrakes.'14 Egressus autem Ruben tempore messis triticeae, repperit in agro mandragoras, quas Liae matri suae detulit. Dixitque Rachel: “ Da mihi partem de mandragoris filii tui ”.
Leah replied, 'Is it not enough to have taken my husband, without your taking my son's mandrakesas well?' So Rachel said, 'Very wel , he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son's mandrakes.'15 Illa respondit: “ Parumne tibi videtur, quod praeripueris maritum mihi, ut etiam mandragoras filii mei auferas? ”. Ait Rachel: “ Dormiat ergo tecum hac nocte pro mandragoris filii tui ”.
When Jacob came back from the fields that night, Leah went out to meet him and said, 'You mustcome to me, for I have hired you at the price of my son's mandrakes.' So he slept with her that night.16 Redeuntique ad vesperam Iacob de agro egressa est in occursum eius Lia et: “ Ad me, inquit, intrabis, quia mercede conduxi te pro mandragoris filii mei ”. Dormivitque cum ea nocte illa.
God heard Leah, and she conceived and gave birth to a fifth son by Jacob.17 Et exaudivit Deus Liam, concepitque et peperit Iacob filium quintum
Then Leah said, 'God has given me my reward for giving my slave-girl to my husband.' So shenamed him Issachar.18 et ait: “ Dedit Deus mercedem mihi, quia dedi ancillam meam viro meo ”; appellavitque nomen illius Issachar.
Again Leah conceived and gave birth to a sixth son by Jacob,19 Rursum Lia concepit et peperit Iacob sextum filium
and said, 'God has given me a fine gift; now my husband wil bring me presents, for I have borne himsix sons.' So she named him Zebulun.20 et ait: “ Donavit me Deus dono bono; hac vice honorabit me maritus meus, eo quod genuerim ei sex filios ”; et idcirco appellavit nomen eius Zabulon.
Later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.21 Post quem peperit filiam nomine Dinam.
Then God remembered Rachel; he heard her and opened her womb.22 Recordatus quoque Deus Rachelis exaudivit eam Deus et aperuit vulvam illius.
She conceived and gave birth to a son, and said, 'God has taken away my disgrace!'23 Quae concepit et peperit filium dicens: “ Abstulit Deus opprobrium meum ”;
She named him Joseph, saying, 'May Yahweh add another son for me!'24 et vocavit nomen illius Ioseph dicens: “ Addat mihi Dominus filium alterum! ”.
When Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, 'Release me and let me go home tomy own country.25 Nato autem Ioseph, dixit Iacob ad Laban: “ Dimitte me, ut revertar in patriam et ad terram meam.
Give me my wives for whom I have worked for you, and my children, and let me go. You are welaware how long I have worked for you.'26 Da mihi uxores et liberos meos, pro quibus servivi tibi, ut abeam; tu nosti servitutem, qua servivi tibi ”.
Laban replied, 'If I have done what pleases you . . . I have learnt by divination that Yahweh hasblessed me because of you.27 Ait illi Laban: “ Inveniam gratiam in conspectu tuo; augurio didici, quia benedixerit mihi Deus propter te.
So name your wages,' he added, 'and I wil pay.'28 Constitue mercedem tuam, quam dem tibi ”.
He replied, 'You know how hard I have worked for you, and how your stock has fared in my charge.29 At ille respondit: “ Tu nosti quomodo servierim tibi et quanti in manibus meis facti sint greges tui.
The little you had before I came has increased enormously, and Yahweh has blessed you wherever Ihave been. When am I to provide for my own household too?'30 Modicum habuisti, antequam venirem ad te, et nunc multiplicatum est vehementer, benedixitque tibi Dominus ad introitum meum. Nunc autem quando providebo etiam domui meae? ”.
Laban said, 'How much am I to pay you?' Jacob replied, 'You need not pay me anything. I shallchange my mind and go on tending your flock, if you do this one thing for me.31 Dixitque Laban: “ Quid tibi dabo? ”. At ille ait: “ Nihil mihi dabis; si feceris, quod postulo, iterum pascam et custodiam pecora tua.
'Go through your entire flock today and remove every black animal among the sheep, and everyspeckled or spotted one among the goats. These wil be my wages,32 Gyrabo omnes greges tuos hodie; separa cuncta pecora varia et maculosa et, quodcumque furvum in ovibus et maculosum variumque in capris fuerit, erit merces mea.
and my uprightness wil answer for me later: when you come to check my wages, every goat I havethat is not speckled or spotted, and every sheep that is not black will count as stolen by me.'33 Respondebitque mihi cras iustitia mea; quando veneris, ut inspicias mercedem meam, omnia, quae non fuerint varia et maculosa in capris et furva in ovibus, furti me arguent ”.
Laban replied, 'Good, just as you say.'34 Dixit Laban: “ Gratum habeo, quod petis! ”.
That same day he removed the striped and speckled he-goats and all the spotted and speckled she-goats, every one that had white on it, and al the black sheep, and entrusted these to his sons.35 Et separavit in die illo hircos striatos atque maculosos et omnes capras varias et maculosas, omne, in quo album erat, et omne furvum in ovibus, et tradidit in manu filiorum suorum.
Then he put a three days' journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob grazed the rest ofLaban's flock.36 Et posuit spatium itineris trium dierum inter se et Iacob, qui pascebat reliquos greges Laban.
Jacob then got fresh shoots from poplar, almond and plane trees, and peeled them in white strips, laying bare the white part of the shoots.37 Tollens ergo Iacob virgas virides populeas et amygdalinas et ex platanis, ex parte ita decorticavit eas, ut in his, quae spoliata fuerant, candor appareret.
He set up the shoots he had peeled in front of the animals, in the troughs, in the water-holes wherethe animals came to drink. Since they mated when they came to drink,38 Posuitque virgas, quas ex parte decorticaverat, in canalibus, ubi effundebatur aqua, ut, cum venissent greges ad bibendum, ante oculos haberent virgas et in aspectu earum conciperent.
the goats thus mated in front of the shoots and so the goats produced striped, spotted and speckledyoung.39 Factumque est ut in ipso calore coitus greges intuerentur virgas et parerent striata et varia et maculosa.
The ewes, on the other hand, Jacob kept apart and made these face whatever was striped or blackin Laban's flock. Thus he built up droves of his own which he did not put with Laban's flocks.40 Agnos autem segregavit Iacob et posuit gregem ex adverso striatorum et omnium furvorum in grege Laban et constituit sibi greges seorsum neque statuit eos cum grege Laban.
Furthermore, whenever the sturdier animals were mating, Jacob put the shoots where the animalscould see them, in the troughs, so that they would mate in front of the shoots.41 Quotiescumque igitur calefiebant pecora robusta, ponebat Iacob virgas in canalibus aquarum ante oculos pecorum, ut in earum contemplatione conciperent.
But when the animals were feeble, he did not put them there; so Laban got the feeble, and Jacob thesturdy.42 Quando vero pecora debilia erant, non ponebat eas. Factaque sunt debilia Laban et robusta Iacob;
Thus the man grew extremely rich, and came to own large flocks, men and women slaves, camelsand donkeys.43 ditatusque est homo ultra modum et habuit greges multos, ancillas et servos, camelos et asinos.
