1 Rachel, seeing that she herself gave Jacob no children, became jealous of her sister. And she said toJacob, 'Give me children, or I shal die!'	1 Ma Rachele veggendosi sterile, portava invidia alla sorella, e disse al suo marito: Dammi de' figli, altrimenti io morrò.
2 This made Jacob angry with Rachel, and he retorted, 'Am I in the position of God, who has denied youmotherhood?'	2 Le rispose disgustato Giacobbe: Tengo io il luogo di Dio, il quale ti ha privata della fecondità?
3 So she said, 'Here is my slave-girl, Bilhah. Sleep with her and let her give birth on my knees; throughher, then, I too shal have children!'	3 Ed ella: Io ho, disse, la serva Bala: prendila, affinché la prole di lei io mi prenda sulle mie ginocchia, e di lei io abbia de' figli.
4 So she gave him her slave-girl Bilhah as concubine. Jacob slept with her,	4 E diede a lui Bala per moglie: la quale
5 and Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a son by Jacob.	5 Data a marito concepì, e partorì un figliuolo.
6 Then Rachel said, 'God has done me justice; yes, he has heard my prayer and given me a son.'Accordingly she named him Dan.	6 E disse Rachele: il Signore ha giudicato in mio favore, e ha esaudita la mia voce, dandomi un figlio: e per questo chiamollo col nome di Dan.
7 Again Rachel's slave-girl Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a second son by Jacob.	7 E di nuovo Bala ingravidò, e partorinne un altro,
8 Then Rachel said, 'I have fought a fateful battle with my sister, and I have won!' So she named himNaphtali.	8 In proposito del quale disse Rachele: il Signore mi ha messa alle mani colla mia sorella, e io l'ho vinta; e chiamollo Nephtali.
9 Now Leah, seeing that she had ceased to bear children, took her slave-girl Zilpah and gave her toJacob as concubine.	9 Veggendo Lia, come avea lasciato di far figliuoli, diede a suo marito la sua schiava Zelpha.
10 So Leah's slave-girl Zilpah gave birth to a son by Jacob.	10 E avendo questa concepito, e partorito un figliuolo,
11 Then Leah exclaimed, 'What good fortune!' So she named him Gad.	11 Disse ella: Fortuna: e chiamollo perciò col nome di Gad.
12 Leah's slave-girl Zilpah gave birth to a second son by Jacob.	12 Ne partorì Zelpha anche un altro.
13 Then Leah said, 'What blessedness! Women will cal me blessed!' So she named him Asher.	13 E Lia disse: Questo è per mia beatitudine: perocché beata mi diranno le donne: per questo lo chiamò Aser.
14 One day, at the time of the wheat harvest, Reuben found some mandrakes in the field and broughtthem to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, 'Please give me some of your son's mandrakes.'	14 Ma essendo Ruben andato alla campagna in tempo che mietevasi il grano, trovò delle mandragore, le quali egli portò a sua madre Lia. Ma Rachele disse: Fammi parte delle mandragore di tuo figlio.
15 Leah replied, 'Is it not enough to have taken my husband, without your taking my son's mandrakesas well?' So Rachel said, 'Very wel , he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son's mandrakes.'	15 Rispose quella: Ti sembra egli poco l'avermi rapito il consorte, se non mi togli anche le mandragore del mio figlio? Disse Rachele: Dorma egli questa notte con te in ricompensa delle mandragore di tuo figlio.
16 When Jacob came back from the fields that night, Leah went out to meet him and said, 'You mustcome to me, for I have hired you at the price of my son's mandrakes.' So he slept with her that night.	16 E tornando alla sera Giacobbe dalla campagna, uscì incontro a lui Lia, e: Meco, disse, verrai: perché ti ho caparrato col prezzo delle mandragore del mio figliuolo. Ed egli si dormì con lei quella notte.
17 God heard Leah, and she conceived and gave birth to a fifth son by Jacob.	17 E il Signore esaudì le preghiere di lei: e concepì, e partorì il quinto figliuolo,
18 Then Leah said, 'God has given me my reward for giving my slave-girl to my husband.' So shenamed him Issachar.	18 E disse: Il Signore mi ha renduta mercede, perché diedi la mia schiava a mio marito: e gli diede il nome d'Issachar.
19 Again Leah conceived and gave birth to a sixth son by Jacob,	19 E di bel nuovo Lia concepì, e partorì il sesto figliuolo,
20 and said, 'God has given me a fine gift; now my husband wil bring me presents, for I have borne himsix sons.' So she named him Zebulun.	20 E disse: Il Signore mi ha dotata di buona dote: anche questa volta si starà con me il mio marito per avergli io fatti sei figliuoli: e per questo chiamollo col nome di Zabulon.
21 Later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.	21 Dopo di questo partorì una figlia per nome Dina.
22 Then God remembered Rachel; he heard her and opened her womb.	22 Ricordatosi il Signore anche di Rachele la esaudì, e la rendé feconda.
23 She conceived and gave birth to a son, and said, 'God has taken away my disgrace!'	23 E concepì, e partorì un figliuolo, dicendo: Il Signore ha tolto il mio obbrobrio.
24 She named him Joseph, saying, 'May Yahweh add another son for me!'	24 E chiamollo col nome di Giuseppe, dicendo: Il Signore diami ancora un altro figliuolo.
25 When Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, 'Release me and let me go home tomy own country.	25 Ma nato che fu Giuseppe, disse Giacobbe al suo suocero: Dammi licenza, che io me ne torni alla patria, e nella mia terra.
26 Give me my wives for whom I have worked for you, and my children, and let me go. You are welaware how long I have worked for you.'	26 Dammi le mogli, e i miei figliuoli, per li quali sono stato a' tuoi servigi, affinché io me ne vada: tu sai qual sorte di servigio sia stato il mio.
27 Laban replied, 'If I have done what pleases you . . . I have learnt by divination that Yahweh hasblessed me because of you.	27 Disse a lui Laban: Possa io trovar grazia dinanzi a te: io ho conosciuto alla prova, che Dio mi ha benedetto per causa tua.
28 So name your wages,' he added, 'and I wil pay.'	28 Determina tu la ricompensa, ch'io debba darti.
29 He replied, 'You know how hard I have worked for you, and how your stock has fared in my charge.	29 Ma quegli rispose: Tu sai in qual modo ti ho servito, e quanto sieno augumentati nelle mani mie i tuoi beni.
30 The little you had before I came has increased enormously, and Yahweh has blessed you wherever Ihave been. When am I to provide for my own household too?'	30 Poco tu avevi prima ch'io venissi a te: ora sei divenuto ricco: e il Signore ti ha benedetto alla mia venuta. È adunque giusto, che io pensi una volta anche alla casa mia.
31 Laban said, 'How much am I to pay you?' Jacob replied, 'You need not pay me anything. I shallchange my mind and go on tending your flock, if you do this one thing for me.	31 E Laban gli disse: Che ti darò io? Ma quegli replicò: Non voglio nulla ma se farai quello ch'io chiedo, pascerò di nuovo le tue pecore, e n'avrò cura,
32 'Go through your entire flock today and remove every black animal among the sheep, and everyspeckled or spotted one among the goats. These wil be my wages,	32 Raduna insieme tutti i tuoi greggi, e metti da parte tutte le pecore variegate, e macchiate di pelame: e tutto quello che verrà fosco, e macchiato, e vario tanto di pecore, che di capre, sarà la mia mercede.
33 and my uprightness wil answer for me later: when you come to check my wages, every goat I havethat is not speckled or spotted, and every sheep that is not black will count as stolen by me.'	33 E parlerà un dì a mio favore la mia fedeltà, allorché verrà il tempo concordato tra noi: e tutto quello che non sarà di vario colore, o macchiato, o fosco tanto di pecore, come di capre, mi dimostrerà reo di furto.
34 Laban replied, 'Good, just as you say.'	34 Disse Laban: Mi piace quello che domandi.
35 That same day he removed the striped and speckled he-goats and all the spotted and speckled she-goats, every one that had white on it, and al the black sheep, and entrusted these to his sons.	35 E quel giorno separò le capre, e le pecore, e i capri e i montoni di vario colore, e macchiati: e tutto il gregge di un sol colore, cioè di bianco, e nero pelame lo diede in governo de' suoi figliuoli.
36 Then he put a three days' journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob grazed the rest ofLaban's flock.	36 E pose una distanza di tre giorni di viaggio tra sé, e il genero, il quale pascolava il rimanente de' suoi greggi.
37 Jacob then got fresh shoots from poplar, almond and plane trees, and peeled them in white strips,laying bare the white part of the shoots.	37 Prese adunque Giacobbe delle verghe di pioppo verdi, e di mandorlo, e di platano, e ne levò parte della corteccia, levata la quale, dove le verghe erano spogliate, spiccò il bianco: e dove non erano state toccate rimasero verdi: onde in tal guisa risultò vario colore.
38 He set up the shoots he had peeled in front of the animals, in the troughs, in the water-holes wherethe animals came to drink. Since they mated when they came to drink,	38 E le pose ne' canali, dove gettavasi l'acqua, affinché venute a bere le pecore, avesser dinanzi agli occhi le verghe, e concepissero rimirandole.
39 the goats thus mated in front of the shoots and so the goats produced striped, spotted and speckledyoung.	39 Ed avvenne, che le pecore in calore miravano le verghe, e figliavano agnelli con macchie, e pezzati, e sparsi di vario colore.
40 The ewes, on the other hand, Jacob kept apart and made these face whatever was striped or blackin Laban's flock. Thus he built up droves of his own which he did not put with Laban's flocks.	40 E Giacobbe divise il gregge, e pose le verghe nei canali davanti agli occhi degli arieti: ed erano di Laban tutti i bianchi, e i neri: gli altri poi tutti di Giacobbe, avendo i greggi separati tra loro.
41 Furthermore, whenever the sturdier animals were mating, Jacob put the shoots where the animalscould see them, in the troughs, so that they would mate in front of the shoots.	41 Quando adunque alla primavera dovean concepire le pecore, mettea Giacobbe le verghe ne' canali dell'acqua dinanzi agli occhi dei montoni, e delle pecore, affinché queste concepissero in guardandole:
42 But when the animals were feeble, he did not put them there; so Laban got the feeble, and Jacob thesturdy.	42 Al tempo poi, in cui le pecore concepiscono, e portano per la seconda volta, non metteva le verghe. E le pecore della seconda eran di Laban: quelle poi della prima figliatura erano di Giacobbe.
43 Thus the man grew extremely rich, and came to own large flocks, men and women slaves, camelsand donkeys.	43 E questi si fece ricco formisura, e fece acquisto di molti greggi, di serve, e servi, e di cammelli, e asini.
