Genesis 26

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 There was a famine in the country -- different from the previous famine which took place in the time ofAbraham -- and Isaac went to Abimelech, the Philistine king at Gerar.	1 Essendo venuta nel paese un'altra carestia dopo quella che c'era stata ai tempi d'Abramo, Isacco se ne andò da Abimelec, re dei Palestini, in Gerara.
2 Yahweh had appeared to him and said, 'Do not go down to Egypt; stay in the country which I shalpoint out to you.	2 E il Signore gli apparve e gli disse: « Non discendere in Egitto, ma stabilisciti nel paese che ti dirò.
3 Remain for the present in that country; I shal be with you and bless you, for I shal give al thesecountries to you and your descendants in fulfilment of the oath I swore to your father Abraham.	3 E restavi pellegrino, ed io sarò teco e ti benedirò, perchè io darò a te e alla tua progenie tutti questi paesi, adempiendo il giuramento che ho fatto ad Abramo tuo padre.
4 I shal make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven, and I shal give them al thesecountries, and al nations on earth wil bless themselves by your descendants	4 E moltiplicherò la tua stirpe come le stelle del cielo, darò alla tua progenie tutte queste regioni, e nella tua discendenza saranno benedette tutte le nazioni della terra;
5 in return for Abraham's obedience; for he kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes and mylaws.'	5 perché Abramo ubbidì alla mia voce, osservò i miei precetti e i miei comandamenti e mantenne le cerimonie e le leggi ».
6 So Isaac stayed at Gerar.	6 Isacco adunque si stabilì in Gerara.
7 When the people of the place asked him about his wife he replied, 'She is my sister,' for he was afraidto say, 'She is my wife,' thinking, 'The people of the place wil kil me because of Rebekah, since she is beautiful.'	7 Essendo poi interrogato dagli uomini del paese intorno alla sua moglie, egli rispondeva: « E mia sorella »; perchè aveva paura a dire che era sua moglie, aspettando che lo uccidessero a motivo della bellezza di lei.
8 When he had been there some time, Abimelech the Philistine king happened to look out of the windowand saw Isaac fondling his wife Rebekah.	8 E avendo per lungo tempo Isacco dimorato in quel medesimo luogo, Abimelec, re dei Palestini, guardando da una finestra, lo vide scherzare con Rebecca sua moglie.
9 Abimelech summoned Isaac and said to him, 'Surely she must be your wife! How could you have said,"She is my sister"?' Isaac replied, 'Because I thought I might be kil ed on her account.'	9 E fattolo venire a sé, gli disse: « Costei senza dubbio è tua moglie; perchè dunque vai affermando che è tua sorella? » Rispose: « Ebbi timore d'essere ucciso a causa di lei ».
10 Abimelech said, 'What a thing to do to us! One of the people might easily have slept with your wife.We should have incurred guilt, thanks to you.'	10 E Abimelec disse: «Perchè ci hai ingannati? Qualcuno avrebbe potuto dormire colla tua moglie, e così ci avresti tirato addosso un gran peccato ». E bandì a tutto il popolo quest'ordine:
11 Then Abimelech issued this order to al the people: 'Whoever touches this man or his wife wil be putto death.'	11 « Chi toccherà la moglie di quest'uomo sarà punito colla morte ».
12 Isaac sowed his crops in that country, and that year he reaped a hundredfold. Yahweh blessed him	12 Isacco poi seminò in quel paese, e in quell'anno raccolse il centuplo, che il Signore lo benedisse.
13 and the man became rich; he prospered more and more until he was very rich indeed.	13 Ed egli diventò ricco, e, andando sempre di bene in meglio, divenne ricchissimo
14 He acquired flocks and herds and a large retinue. The Philistines began to envy him.	14 e padrone di pecore, di armenti e di numerosa servitù.
15 The Philistines had blocked up al the wel s dug by his father's servants -- in the days of his fatherAbraham -- fil ing them in with earth.	15 Perciò i Palestini, mossi da invidia, turarono in quel tempo, empiendoli di terra, tutti i pozzi che i servi del suo padre Abramo avevano scavati,
16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, 'You must leave us, for you have become much more powerful thanwe are.'	16 e tanto fecero che lo stesso Abimelec disse ad Isacco: «Vattene di qui, perchè tu sei divenuto molto più potente di noi ».
17 So Isaac left; he pitched camp in the Val ey of Gerar and there he stayed.	17 E Isacco partito di lì andò ad abitare nella valle di Gerara.
18 Isaac reopened the wel s dug by the servants of his father Abraham and blocked up by thePhilistines after Abraham's death, and he gave them the same names as his father had given them.	18 E scavò di nuovo i pozzi che i servi del suo padre Abramo avevano scavati, che i Filistei avevan turati dopo la morte di lui, e pose loro i medesimi nomi che aveva loro posto il padre.
19 But when Isaac's servants, digging in the val ey, found a wel of spring-water there,	19 Scavarono poi nella valle e trovaron dell'acqua viva.
20 the herdsmen of Gerar disputed it with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, 'That water is ours!' So Isaacnamed the wel Esek, because they had disputed with him.	20 Ma anche lì i pastori di Gerara contesero con i pastori d'Isacco, dicendo: «L'acqua è nostra ». Perciò, da quello che era avvenuto, chiamò quel pozzo Calunnia.
21 They dug another wel , and there was a dispute over that one too; so he named it Sitnah.	21 Poi scavarono un altro pozzo, e siccome anche per quello ci fu rissa, lo chiamò Inimicizia.
22 Then he left there, and dug another wel , and since there was no dispute over this one, he named itRehoboth, saying, 'Now Yahweh has made room for us to thrive in the country.'	22 Partitosi poi di là scavò un altro pozzo, per il quale non ci fu contrasto, e perciò lo chiamò Larghezza, dicendo: « Finalmente il Signore ci ha messi al largo e ci ha fatti crescere sopra la terra ».
23 From there he went up to Beersheba.	23 E da quel luogo Isacco salì a Bersabee,
24 Yahweh appeared to him the same night and said: I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not beafraid, for I am with you. I shall bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.	24 dove, la stessa notte, gli apparve il Signore e gli disse: « Io sono il Dio d'Abramo tuo padre: non temere, perchè io sono con te, e ti benedirò e moltiplicherò la tua progenie per amore di Abramo mio servo ».
25 There he built an altar and invoked the name of Yahweh. There he pitched his tent, and there Isaac'sservants sank a wel .	25 Egli allora eresse in quel luogo un altare, e, invocato il nome del Signore, tese la sua tenda, e ordinò ai suoi servi di scavare un pozzo.
26 Abimelech came from Gerar to see him, with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of hisarmy.	26 Ora essendo da Gerara venuti a trovarlo in quel luogo Abimelec, Ocozat suo amico e Ficol capo delle milizie,
27 Isaac said to them, 'Why do you come to me since you hate me, and have made me leave you?'	27 Isacco disse loro: «Perchè siete venuti da me, da un uomo che avete odiato e scacciato dal vostro paese'? »
28 'It became clear to us that Yahweh was with you,' they replied, 'and so we thought, "It is time to havea treaty sworn between us, between us and you." So let us make a covenant with you:	28 Quelli risposero: « Abbiamo veduto che il Signore è teco, e perciò abbiam detto: « Siavi un giuramento tra noi, e facciamo alleanza,
29 that you will not do us any harm, since we never molested you but were unfailingly kind to you andlet you go away in peace. Henceforth, Yahweh's blessing on you!'	29 tale che tu non faccia alcun male a noi, come noi, senza toccar nulla di ciò che è tuo, senza far nulla in tuo danno, ti abbiamo lasciato partire in pace, ricco della benedizione del Signore ».
30 He then made them a feast and they ate and drank.	30 Egli dunque fece loro un convito. Così, dopo aver mangiato e bevuto,
31 Early next morning, they exchanged oaths. Then Isaac bade them farewell and they left him asfriends.	31 levatisi, la mattina, fecero scambievole giuramento. Poi Isacco li lasciò andare in pace a casa loro.
32 It happened, the same day, that Isaac's servants brought him news about the well they had beendigging. 'We have found water!' they said to him.	32 E in quello stesso giorno, ecco arrivare i servi d'Isacco a portargli nuove del pozzo scavato, e a dire: « Abbiamo trovato dell'acqua ».
33 So he cal ed the wel Sheba, and hence the town is named Beersheba to this day.	33 Per questo chiamò il pozzo Abbondanza, e la città porta il nome di Bersabee fino ad oggi.
34 When Esau was forty years old he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemathdaughter of Elon the Hittite.	34 Esaù giunto all'età di quarantanni prese in moglie Giuditta, figlia di Beeri Eteo, e Basemat, figlia di Elon, dello stesso paese.
35 These were a bitter disappointment to Isaac and Rebekah.	35 E queste tutt'e due furon causa d'amarezze per Isacco e Rebecca.
