NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 There was a famine in the country -- different from the previous famine which took place in the time ofAbraham -- and Isaac went to Abimelech, the Philistine king at Gerar.	1 Il y avait déjà eu une famine au temps d’Abraham; mais de nouveau la famine revint dans le pays. Isaac partit donc vers Guérar, auprès d’Abimélek roi des Philistins.
2 Yahweh had appeared to him and said, 'Do not go down to Egypt; stay in the country which I shalpoint out to you.	2 Yahvé lui apparut et lui dit: “Ne va pas en Égypte, mais reste dans le pays que je t’indiquerai.
3 Remain for the present in that country; I shal be with you and bless you, for I shal give al thesecountries to you and your descendants in fulfilment of the oath I swore to your father Abraham.	3 Reste dans ce pays, je serai avec toi et je te bénirai. Je donnerai tout ce pays à toi et à ta descendance, car je veux tenir le serment que j’ai fait à ton père Abraham.
4 I shal make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven, and I shal give them al thesecountries, and al nations on earth wil bless themselves by your descendants	4 Je rendrai ta descendance aussi nombreuse que les étoiles du ciel et je lui donnerai tout ce pays. Toutes les nations de la terre se verront bénies en ta descendance,
5 in return for Abraham's obedience; for he kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes and mylaws.'	5 parce qu’Abraham a écouté ma voix, qu’il m’a obéi et qu’il a observé mes ordres, mes commandements et mes lois.”
6 So Isaac stayed at Gerar.	6 Isaac habita donc à Guérar.
7 When the people of the place asked him about his wife he replied, 'She is my sister,' for he was afraidto say, 'She is my wife,' thinking, 'The people of the place wil kil me because of Rebekah, since she is beautiful.'	7 Quand les gens du pays lui posaient des questions sur sa femme, il répondait: “C’est ma sœur.” En effet il avait peur de dire: “C’est ma femme”, car il se disait: “Les gens du pays vont me tuer à cause de Rébecca car elle est très belle.”
8 When he had been there some time, Abimelech the Philistine king happened to look out of the windowand saw Isaac fondling his wife Rebekah.	8 Il était là depuis longtemps déjà quand Abimélek, roi des Philistins, qui regardait par sa fenêtre, vit Isaac en train de caresser sa femme Rébecca.
9 Abimelech summoned Isaac and said to him, 'Surely she must be your wife! How could you have said,"She is my sister"?' Isaac replied, 'Because I thought I might be kil ed on her account.'	9 Abimélek appela Isaac: “C’est sûrement ta femme, lui dit-il, pourquoi as-tu dit qu’elle était ta sœur?” Isaac répondit: “C’est que je risquais de mourir à cause d’elle.”
10 Abimelech said, 'What a thing to do to us! One of the people might easily have slept with your wife.We should have incurred guilt, thanks to you.'	10 Abimélek lui dit: “Regarde ce que tu as fait! Encore un peu et quelqu’un du peuple couchait avec ta femme, et tu nous faisais porter le poids d’une faute.”
11 Then Abimelech issued this order to al the people: 'Whoever touches this man or his wife wil be putto death.'	11 Abimélek donna donc cet ordre à tout le peuple: “Quiconque touchera à cet homme ou à sa femme, sera mis à mort.”
12 Isaac sowed his crops in that country, and that year he reaped a hundredfold. Yahweh blessed him	12 Cette année-là, Isaac sema dans ce pays et récolta cent pour un. Yahvé le bénit
13 and the man became rich; he prospered more and more until he was very rich indeed.	13 et l’homme devint riche, de plus en plus riche, jusqu’à devenir très riche.
14 He acquired flocks and herds and a large retinue. The Philistines began to envy him.	14 Ses troupeaux de petit bétail, ses troupeaux de gros bétail et ses nombreux serviteurs rendaient les Philistins jaloux.
15 The Philistines had blocked up al the wel s dug by his father's servants -- in the days of his fatherAbraham -- fil ing them in with earth.	15 Les Philistins bouchèrent donc, en les remplissant de terre, tous les puits que les serviteurs de son père Abraham avaient creusés en son temps.
16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, 'You must leave us, for you have become much more powerful thanwe are.'	16 Abimélek lui-même dit à Isaac: “Va-t’en de chez nous! Tu es devenu trop puissant pour nous.”
17 So Isaac left; he pitched camp in the Val ey of Gerar and there he stayed.	17 Isaac partit donc de cet endroit et il campa dans la vallée de Guérar. C’est là qu’il résida.
18 Isaac reopened the wel s dug by the servants of his father Abraham and blocked up by thePhilistines after Abraham's death, and he gave them the same names as his father had given them.	18 Isaac creusa de nouveau les puits qu’on avait creusés au temps d’Abraham, son père, et que les Philistins avaient bouchés après la mort d’Abraham. Il leur donna les mêmes noms que son père leur avait donnés.
19 But when Isaac's servants, digging in the val ey, found a wel of spring-water there,	19 Les serviteurs d’Isaac creusèrent alors dans la vallée et ils y trouvèrent un puits d’eau vive.
20 the herdsmen of Gerar disputed it with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, 'That water is ours!' So Isaacnamed the wel Esek, because they had disputed with him.	20 Les bergers de Guérar vinrent discuter avec les bergers d’Isaac: “L’eau est à nous!”, disaient-ils. Isaac appela donc le puits du nom d’Ések (c’est-à-dire: Dispute), parce qu’ils s’étaient disputés.
21 They dug another wel , and there was a dispute over that one too; so he named it Sitnah.	21 Ils creusèrent un autre puits, et cette fois encore on leur fit une querelle. Il appela donc ce puits Sitna (c’est-à-dire: Désaccord).
22 Then he left there, and dug another wel , and since there was no dispute over this one, he named itRehoboth, saying, 'Now Yahweh has made room for us to thrive in the country.'	22 Il partit plus loin, creusa un autre puits, et là, on ne leur fit pas d’histoires. Il appela donc ce puits Réhobot (c’est-à-dire: Au large), car il disait: “Maintenant, Yahvé nous a mis au large, nous allons nous développer dans ce pays.”
23 From there he went up to Beersheba.	23 Il partit de là pour Bersabée.
24 Yahweh appeared to him the same night and said: I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not beafraid, for I am with you. I shall bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.	24 Yahvé lui apparut cette nuit-là et lui dit: “Je suis le Dieu d’Abraham, ton père. N’aie pas peur, je suis avec toi, je te bénirai et je multiplierai ta descendance à cause d’Abraham, mon serviteur.”
25 There he built an altar and invoked the name of Yahweh. There he pitched his tent, and there Isaac'sservants sank a wel .	25 Il construisit là un autel et invoqua le nom de Yahvé. Il y monta sa tente, et là aussi ses serviteurs creusèrent un puits.
26 Abimelech came from Gerar to see him, with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of hisarmy.	26 De Guérar, Abimélek vint à la rencontre d’Isaac avec Akhouzzat, son ami, et Pikol, le chef de son armée.
27 Isaac said to them, 'Why do you come to me since you hate me, and have made me leave you?'	27 Isaac leur dit: “Pourquoi êtes-vous venus vers moi, puisque vous me détestez et que vous m’avez chassé de chez vous?”
28 'It became clear to us that Yahweh was with you,' they replied, 'and so we thought, "It is time to havea treaty sworn between us, between us and you." So let us make a covenant with you:	28 Ils répondirent: “Nous avons vu clairement que Yahvé était avec toi, aussi nous te disons: Qu’il y ait une paix jurée entre nous et toi. Concluons ensemble une alliance!
29 that you will not do us any harm, since we never molested you but were unfailingly kind to you andlet you go away in peace. Henceforth, Yahweh's blessing on you!'	29 Nous ne t’avons pas fait de mal, nous ne t’avons fait que du bien et nous t’avons renvoyé en paix. Tu ne nous feras donc aucun mal non plus, maintenant que Yahvé t’a tout donné.”
30 He then made them a feast and they ate and drank.	30 Isaac leur prépara un bon repas, ils mangèrent et ils burent.
31 Early next morning, they exchanged oaths. Then Isaac bade them farewell and they left him asfriends.	31 Ils se levèrent de bon matin et se prêtèrent serment l’un à l’autre, puis Isaac les laissa partir et ils s’en allèrent de chez lui en paix.
32 It happened, the same day, that Isaac's servants brought him news about the well they had beendigging. 'We have found water!' they said to him.	32 Ce jour-là, des serviteurs qui creusaient un puits vinrent trouver Isaac avec cette bonne nouvelle: “Nous avons trouvé de l’eau.”
33 So he cal ed the wel Sheba, and hence the town is named Beersheba to this day.	33 Il appela le puits: Sabé (c’est-à-dire: Serment); c’est pour cela que la ville s’est appelée Bersabée (Puits du Serment) jusqu’à ce jour.
34 When Esau was forty years old he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemathdaughter of Elon the Hittite.	34 À l’âge de 40 ans, Ésaü épousa Judith fille de Bééri le Hittite, et Basmat, fille d’Élon le Hittite.
35 These were a bitter disappointment to Isaac and Rebekah.	35 Mais elles causèrent bien des ennuis à Isaac et à Rébecca.
