Genesis 26

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 There was a famine in the country -- different from the previous famine which took place in the time ofAbraham -- and Isaac went to Abimelech, the Philistine king at Gerar.	1 Venne una carestia nella terra, dopo quella che c’era stata ai tempi di Abramo, e Isacco andò a Gerar presso Abimèlec, re dei Filistei.
2 Yahweh had appeared to him and said, 'Do not go down to Egypt; stay in the country which I shalpoint out to you.	2 Gli apparve il Signore e gli disse: «Non scendere in Egitto, abita nella terra che io ti indicherò,
3 Remain for the present in that country; I shal be with you and bless you, for I shal give al thesecountries to you and your descendants in fulfilment of the oath I swore to your father Abraham.	3 rimani come forestiero in questa terra e io sarò con te e ti benedirò: a te e alla tua discendenza io concederò tutti questi territori, e manterrò il giuramento che ho fatto ad Abramo tuo padre.
4 I shal make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven, and I shal give them al thesecountries, and al nations on earth wil bless themselves by your descendants	4 Renderò la tua discendenza numerosa come le stelle del cielo e concederò alla tua discendenza tutti questi territori: tutte le nazioni della terra si diranno benedette nella tua discendenza;
5 in return for Abraham's obedience; for he kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes and mylaws.'	5 perché Abramo ha obbedito alla mia voce e ha osservato ciò che io gli avevo prescritto: i miei comandamenti, le mie istituzioni e le mie leggi».
6 So Isaac stayed at Gerar.	6 Così Isacco dimorò a Gerar.
7 When the people of the place asked him about his wife he replied, 'She is my sister,' for he was afraidto say, 'She is my wife,' thinking, 'The people of the place wil kil me because of Rebekah, since she is beautiful.'	7 Gli uomini del luogo gli fecero domande sulla moglie, ma egli disse: «È mia sorella»; infatti aveva timore di dire: «È mia moglie», pensando che gli uomini del luogo lo avrebbero potuto uccidere a causa di Rebecca, che era di bell’aspetto.
8 When he had been there some time, Abimelech the Philistine king happened to look out of the windowand saw Isaac fondling his wife Rebekah.	8 Era là da molto tempo, quando Abimèlec, re dei Filistei, si affacciò alla finestra e vide Isacco scherzare con la propria moglie Rebecca.
9 Abimelech summoned Isaac and said to him, 'Surely she must be your wife! How could you have said,"She is my sister"?' Isaac replied, 'Because I thought I might be kil ed on her account.'	9 Abimèlec chiamò Isacco e disse: «Sicuramente ella è tua moglie. E perché tu hai detto: “È mia sorella”?». Gli rispose Isacco: «Perché mi son detto: che io non abbia a morire per causa di lei!».
10 Abimelech said, 'What a thing to do to us! One of the people might easily have slept with your wife.We should have incurred guilt, thanks to you.'	10 Riprese Abimèlec: «Perché ti sei comportato così con noi? Poco ci mancava che qualcuno del popolo si unisse a tua moglie e tu attirassi su di noi una colpa».
11 Then Abimelech issued this order to al the people: 'Whoever touches this man or his wife wil be putto death.'	11 Abimèlec diede quest’ordine a tutto il popolo: «Chi tocca quest’uomo o sua moglie sarà messo a morte!».
12 Isaac sowed his crops in that country, and that year he reaped a hundredfold. Yahweh blessed him	12 Isacco fece una semina in quella terra e raccolse quell’anno il centuplo. Il Signore infatti lo aveva benedetto.
13 and the man became rich; he prospered more and more until he was very rich indeed.	13 E l’uomo divenne ricco e crebbe tanto in ricchezze fino a divenire ricchissimo:
14 He acquired flocks and herds and a large retinue. The Philistines began to envy him.	14 possedeva greggi e armenti e numerosi schiavi, e i Filistei cominciarono a invidiarlo.
15 The Philistines had blocked up al the wel s dug by his father's servants -- in the days of his fatherAbraham -- fil ing them in with earth.	15 Tutti i pozzi che avevano scavato i servi di suo padre ai tempi di Abramo, suo padre, i Filistei li avevano chiusi riempiendoli di terra.
16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, 'You must leave us, for you have become much more powerful thanwe are.'	16 Abimèlec disse a Isacco: «Vattene via da noi, perché tu sei molto più potente di noi».
17 So Isaac left; he pitched camp in the Val ey of Gerar and there he stayed.	17 Isacco andò via di là, si accampò lungo il torrente di Gerar e vi si stabilì.
18 Isaac reopened the wel s dug by the servants of his father Abraham and blocked up by thePhilistines after Abraham's death, and he gave them the same names as his father had given them.	18 Isacco riattivò i pozzi d’acqua, che avevano scavato i servi di suo padre, Abramo, e che i Filistei avevano chiuso dopo la morte di Abramo, e li chiamò come li aveva chiamati suo padre.
19 But when Isaac's servants, digging in the val ey, found a wel of spring-water there,	19 I servi di Isacco scavarono poi nella valle e vi trovarono un pozzo di acqua viva.
20 the herdsmen of Gerar disputed it with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, 'That water is ours!' So Isaacnamed the wel Esek, because they had disputed with him.	20 Ma i pastori di Gerar litigarono con i pastori di Isacco, dicendo: «L’acqua è nostra!». Allora egli chiamò il pozzo Esek, perché quelli avevano litigato con lui.
21 They dug another wel , and there was a dispute over that one too; so he named it Sitnah.	21 Scavarono un altro pozzo, ma quelli litigarono anche per questo ed egli lo chiamò Sitna.
22 Then he left there, and dug another wel , and since there was no dispute over this one, he named itRehoboth, saying, 'Now Yahweh has made room for us to thrive in the country.'	22 Si mosse di là e scavò un altro pozzo, per il quale non litigarono; allora egli lo chiamò Recobòt e disse: «Ora il Signore ci ha dato spazio libero, perché noi prosperiamo nella terra».
23 From there he went up to Beersheba.	23 Di là salì a Bersabea.
24 Yahweh appeared to him the same night and said: I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not beafraid, for I am with you. I shall bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.	24 E in quella notte gli apparve il Signore e disse: «Io sono il Dio di Abramo, tuo padre; non temere, perché io sono con te: ti benedirò e moltiplicherò la tua discendenza a causa di Abramo, mio servo».
25 There he built an altar and invoked the name of Yahweh. There he pitched his tent, and there Isaac'sservants sank a wel .	25 Allora egli costruì in quel luogo un altare e invocò il nome del Signore. Lì piantò la tenda, e i servi di Isacco scavarono un pozzo.
26 Abimelech came from Gerar to see him, with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of hisarmy.	26 Intanto Abimèlec da Gerar era andato da lui, insieme con Acuzzàt, suo consigliere, e Picol, capo del suo esercito.
27 Isaac said to them, 'Why do you come to me since you hate me, and have made me leave you?'	27 Isacco disse loro: «Perché siete venuti da me, mentre voi mi odiate e mi avete scacciato da voi?».
28 'It became clear to us that Yahweh was with you,' they replied, 'and so we thought, "It is time to havea treaty sworn between us, between us and you." So let us make a covenant with you:	28 Gli risposero: «Abbiamo visto che il Signore è con te e abbiamo detto: vi sia tra noi un giuramento, tra noi e te, e concludiamo un’alleanza con te:
29 that you will not do us any harm, since we never molested you but were unfailingly kind to you andlet you go away in peace. Henceforth, Yahweh's blessing on you!'	29 tu non ci farai alcun male, come noi non ti abbiamo toccato e non ti abbiamo fatto se non del bene e ti abbiamo lasciato andare in pace. Tu sei ora un uomo benedetto dal Signore».
30 He then made them a feast and they ate and drank.	30 Allora imbandì loro un convito e mangiarono e bevvero.
31 Early next morning, they exchanged oaths. Then Isaac bade them farewell and they left him asfriends.	31 Alzatisi di buon mattino, si prestarono giuramento l’un l’altro, poi Isacco li congedò e partirono da lui in pace.
32 It happened, the same day, that Isaac's servants brought him news about the well they had beendigging. 'We have found water!' they said to him.	32 Proprio in quel giorno arrivarono i servi di Isacco e lo informarono a proposito del pozzo che avevano scavato e gli dissero: «Abbiamo trovato l’acqua».
33 So he cal ed the wel Sheba, and hence the town is named Beersheba to this day.	33 Allora egli lo chiamò Siba: per questo la città si chiama Bersabea ancora oggi.
34 When Esau was forty years old he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemathdaughter of Elon the Hittite.	34 Quando Esaù ebbe quarant’anni, prese in moglie Giuditta, figlia di Beerì l’Ittita, e Basmat, figlia di Elon l’Ittita.
35 These were a bitter disappointment to Isaac and Rebekah.	35 Esse furono causa d’intima amarezza per Isacco e per Rebecca.
