Genesis 26

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 There was a famine in the country -- different from the previous famine which took place in the time ofAbraham -- and Isaac went to Abimelech, the Philistine king at Gerar.	1 Or ci fu una carestia nel paese, oltre la carestia precedente, che era avvenuta ai tempi di Abramo, onde Isacco andò da Abimèlech, re dei Filistei, a Gerar.
2 Yahweh had appeared to him and said, 'Do not go down to Egypt; stay in the country which I shalpoint out to you.	2 Gli apparve allora il Signore e gli disse: "Non scendere in Egitto: accampati nella regione che io ti dirò.
3 Remain for the present in that country; I shal be with you and bless you, for I shal give al thesecountries to you and your descendants in fulfilment of the oath I swore to your father Abraham.	3 Sii ospite in questo paese e io sarò con te e ti benedirò, perché a te e alla tua discendenza io darò tutti questi paesi e farò così sussistere il giuramento che ho fatto ad Abramo tuo padre.
4 I shal make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven, and I shal give them al thesecountries, and al nations on earth wil bless themselves by your descendants	4 Moltiplicherò la tua discendenza come le stelle del cielo e darò alla tua discendenza tutti questi paesi e tutte le nazioni della terra si diranno benedette per la tua discendenza;
5 in return for Abraham's obedience; for he kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes and mylaws.'	5 in ricompensa del fatto che Abramo ubbidì alla mia voce e osservò ciò che io gli avevo dato da osservare: i miei comandamenti, le mie istituzioni e le mie leggi".
6 So Isaac stayed at Gerar.	6 Così Isacco dimorò a Gerar.
7 When the people of the place asked him about his wife he replied, 'She is my sister,' for he was afraidto say, 'She is my wife,' thinking, 'The people of the place wil kil me because of Rebekah, since she is beautiful.'	7 Gli uomini del luogo lo interrogarono intorno a sua moglie ed egli disse: "E' mia sorella!", infatti aveva timore di dire "mia moglie", pensando che gli uomini del luogo lo uccidessero, per causa di Rebecca, perché essa era avvenente di aspetto.
8 When he had been there some time, Abimelech the Philistine king happened to look out of the windowand saw Isaac fondling his wife Rebekah.	8 Quando erano già passati lunghi giorni colà, Abimèlech, re dei Filistei, si affacciò alla finestra e vide che Isacco stava accarezzando la propria moglie Rebecca.
9 Abimelech summoned Isaac and said to him, 'Surely she must be your wife! How could you have said,"She is my sister"?' Isaac replied, 'Because I thought I might be kil ed on her account.'	9 Allora Abimèlech chiamò Isacco e disse: "Non c'è dubbio che costei sia tua moglie; e come mai tu hai detto: "E' mia sorella"?". Gli rispose Isacco: "Perché mi son detto: "Che non abbia a morire per causa di lei!".
10 Abimelech said, 'What a thing to do to us! One of the people might easily have slept with your wife.We should have incurred guilt, thanks to you.'	10 Riprese Abimèlech: "Che cosa mai è questo che tu hai fatto? Poco ci mancava che qualcuno del popolo giacesse con tua moglie e tu attirassi così su di noi una colpa!".
11 Then Abimelech issued this order to al the people: 'Whoever touches this man or his wife wil be putto death.'	11 Allora Abimèlech diede ordine a tutto il popolo in questi termini: "Colui che tocca quest'uomo o la sua moglie sarà senz'altro messo a morte!".
12 Isaac sowed his crops in that country, and that year he reaped a hundredfold. Yahweh blessed him	12 Poi Isacco fece una semina in quel paese, e raccolse quell'anno una misura centuplicata. Il Signore lo benedisse tanto,
13 and the man became rich; he prospered more and more until he was very rich indeed.	13 che quest'uomo diventò grande e continuò a crescere finché fu grande assai,
14 He acquired flocks and herds and a large retinue. The Philistines began to envy him.	14 e venne a possedere greggi di pecore e armenti di buoi e numerosa servitù, onde i Filistei cominciarono a invidiarlo.
15 The Philistines had blocked up al the wel s dug by his father's servants -- in the days of his fatherAbraham -- fil ing them in with earth.	15 Intanto tutti i pozzi che avevano scavato i servi di suo padre, ai tempi di Abramo, suo padre, i Filistei li avevano turati e li avevano riempiti di terra.
16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, 'You must leave us, for you have become much more powerful thanwe are.'	16 Allora Abimèlech disse ad Isacco: "Vattene via da noi, perché tu sei troppo più potente di noi!".
17 So Isaac left; he pitched camp in the Val ey of Gerar and there he stayed.	17 Isacco andò via di là, si accampò nel torrente di Gerar e vi si stabilì.
18 Isaac reopened the wel s dug by the servants of his father Abraham and blocked up by thePhilistines after Abraham's death, and he gave them the same names as his father had given them.	18 Isacco riscavò i pozzi d'acqua che avevano scavato ai giorni di Abramo suo padre, e che i Filistei avevano turato dopo la morte di Abramo, e li denominò con gli stessi nomi con cui li aveva chiamati suo padre.
19 But when Isaac's servants, digging in the val ey, found a wel of spring-water there,	19 I servi di Isacco scavarono poi nella valle e vi trovarono un pozzo di acqua viva.
20 the herdsmen of Gerar disputed it with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, 'That water is ours!' So Isaacnamed the wel Esek, because they had disputed with him.	20 Ma i pastori di Gerar vennero a contesa con i pastori di Isacco, dicendo: "L'acqua è nostra!". Ond'egli chiamò il pozzo Esech, perché quelli avevano litigato con lui.
21 They dug another wel , and there was a dispute over that one too; so he named it Sitnah.	21 Scavarono un altro pozzo, ma quelli vennero a contesa anche per questo, ond'egli lo chiamò Sitna.
22 Then he left there, and dug another wel , and since there was no dispute over this one, he named itRehoboth, saying, 'Now Yahweh has made room for us to thrive in the country.'	22 Allora si mosse di là e scavò un altro pozzo, per il quale non vennero a contesa, ond'egli lo chiamò Recobot e disse: "Ormai il Signore ci ha dato spazio libero, sicché noi possiamo prosperare nel paese".
23 From there he went up to Beersheba.	23 Poi di là egli salì a Bersabea,
24 Yahweh appeared to him the same night and said: I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not beafraid, for I am with you. I shall bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.	24 e durante quella notte gli apparve il Signore e disse: "Io sono il Dio di Abramo, di tuo padre: non temere, perché io sono con te. Ti benedirò e moltiplicherò la tua discendenza in grazia di Abramo, mio servo".
25 There he built an altar and invoked the name of Yahweh. There he pitched his tent, and there Isaac'sservants sank a wel .	25 Allora egli costruì colà un altare e invocò il nome del Signore. Ivi rizzò la sua tenda, mentre i suoi servi stavano scavando un pozzo.
26 Abimelech came from Gerar to see him, with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of hisarmy.	26 Nel frattempo Abimèlech da Gerar era andato da lui, insieme con Acuzzat, suo amico, e Picol, capo del suo esercito.
27 Isaac said to them, 'Why do you come to me since you hate me, and have made me leave you?'	27 Isacco disse loro: "Come mai siete venuti da me, mentre voi mi odiate e mi avete cacciato da voi?".
28 'It became clear to us that Yahweh was with you,' they replied, 'and so we thought, "It is time to havea treaty sworn between us, between us and you." So let us make a covenant with you:	28 Gli risposero: "Abbiamo proprio visto che il Signore è con te e abbiamo detto: Vi sia un giuramento tra di noi: tra noi da una parte e te dall'altra parte, e lascia che concludiamo un patto con te;
29 that you will not do us any harm, since we never molested you but were unfailingly kind to you andlet you go away in peace. Henceforth, Yahweh's blessing on you!'	29 che tu non ci farai del male, a quel modo che noi non ti abbiamo toccato e a quel modo che noi non ti abbiamo fatto se non il bene e ti abbiamo mandato via in pace. Tu ora sei un uomo benedetto dal Signore".
30 He then made them a feast and they ate and drank.	30 Egli fece allora un convito per loro e mangiarono e bevvero.
31 Early next morning, they exchanged oaths. Then Isaac bade them farewell and they left him asfriends.	31 Alzatisi alla mattina presto fecero giuramento l'uno all'altro, poi Isacco li licenziò e quelli partirono da lui in pace.
32 It happened, the same day, that Isaac's servants brought him news about the well they had beendigging. 'We have found water!' they said to him.	32 Or proprio quel giorno arrivarono i servi di Isacco e l'informarono a proposito del pozzo che avevano scavato e gli dissero: "Abbiamo trovato l'acqua!".
33 So he cal ed the wel Sheba, and hence the town is named Beersheba to this day.	33 Allora egli lo chiamò Sibea. Per questo il nome della città fu Bersabea, fino al giorno d'oggi.
34 When Esau was forty years old he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemathdaughter of Elon the Hittite.	34 Quando Esaù ebbe quarant'anni, prese in moglie Giudit, figlia di Beeri l'hittita, e Basemat, figlia di Elon l'hittita.
35 These were a bitter disappointment to Isaac and Rebekah.	35 Esse divennero l'intimo rammarico per Isacco e per Rebecca.
