Genesis 26

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA MARTINI
1 There was a famine in the country -- different from the previous famine which took place in the time ofAbraham -- and Isaac went to Abimelech, the Philistine king at Gerar.	1 Ma essendo venuta la fame in quel paese dopo la sterilità avvenuta ne' giorni di Abramo, se n'andò Isaac da Abimelech re de' Palestini in Gerara.
2 Yahweh had appeared to him and said, 'Do not go down to Egypt; stay in the country which I shalpoint out to you.	2 E il Signore gli apparve, e disse: Non andare in Egitto; ma posati nel paese, ch'io ti dirò;
3 Remain for the present in that country; I shal be with you and bless you, for I shal give al thesecountries to you and your descendants in fulfilment of the oath I swore to your father Abraham.	3 E stavvi pellegrino, e io sarò teco, e ti benedirò: imperocché a te, e al seme tuo darò tutte queste regioni, adempiendo il giuramento fatto da me ad Abramo tuo padre.
4 I shal make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven, and I shal give them al thesecountries, and al nations on earth wil bless themselves by your descendants	4 E moltiplicherò la tua stirpe come le stelle del cielo: e darò ai tuoi posteri tutte queste regioni: e nel seme tuo SARAN BENEDETTE tutte le nazioni della terra,
5 in return for Abraham's obedience; for he kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes and mylaws.'	5 Perché Abramo obbedì alla mia voce, e osservò i precetti, e comandamenti miei, e mantenne le cerimonie, e le leggi.
6 So Isaac stayed at Gerar.	6 Isacco adunque si fermò in Gerara.
7 When the people of the place asked him about his wife he replied, 'She is my sister,' for he was afraidto say, 'She is my wife,' thinking, 'The people of the place wil kil me because of Rebekah, since she is beautiful.'	7 Ed essendogli fatte delle interrogazioni dalla gente di quel luogo intorno alla sua moglie, rispose: Ella è mia sorella: perocché ebbe paura di confessare, che fosse unita seco in matrimonio, sospettando, che forse presi dalla bellezza di lei non lo uccidessero.
8 When he had been there some time, Abimelech the Philistine king happened to look out of the windowand saw Isaac fondling his wife Rebekah.	8 E passato un lungo tempo, e abitando egli nel medesimo luogo, traguardando Abimelech re de' Palestini per una finestra, lo vide scherzare con Rebecca sua moglie.
9 Abimelech summoned Isaac and said to him, 'Surely she must be your wife! How could you have said,"She is my sister"?' Isaac replied, 'Because I thought I might be kil ed on her account.'	9 E fattolo venir a sé, disse: Egli è fuor di dubbio, ch'ella è tua moglie: per qual motivo hai tu affermato, esser lei tua sorella? Rispose: Temei di essere a causa di lei ucciso.
10 Abimelech said, 'What a thing to do to us! One of the people might easily have slept with your wife.We should have incurred guilt, thanks to you.'	10 E disse Abimelech: Per qual motivo ci hai tu ingannati? poteva alcuno fare oltraggio alla tua donna, e tu ci avresti tirato addosso un gran peccato. E fece intimare a tutto il popolo questa parola:
11 Then Abimelech issued this order to al the people: 'Whoever touches this man or his wife wil be putto death.'	11 Chi toccherà la moglie di quest'uomo, sarà punito di morte.
12 Isaac sowed his crops in that country, and that year he reaped a hundredfold. Yahweh blessed him	12 Ma Isacco seminò in quella terra, e in quell'anno trovò il centuplo: e il Signore lo benedisse.
13 and the man became rich; he prospered more and more until he was very rich indeed.	13 Ed egli diventò ricco, e andava crescendo di bene in meglio, talmente che divenne sommamente grande.
14 He acquired flocks and herds and a large retinue. The Philistines began to envy him.	14 Egli fu anche padrone di pecore, e d'armenti, e di numerosa servitù. Quindi portandogli invidia i Palestini,
15 The Philistines had blocked up al the wel s dug by his father's servants -- in the days of his fatherAbraham -- fil ing them in with earth.	15 Accecarono in quel tempo tutti i pozzi scavati da' servi del padre di lui Abramo, empiendoli di terra:
16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, 'You must leave us, for you have become much more powerful thanwe are.'	16 E la cosa andò tanto in là, che lo stesso Abimelech disse ad Isacco: Ritirati da noi; perocché sei molto più possente di noi.
17 So Isaac left; he pitched camp in the Val ey of Gerar and there he stayed.	17 Ed egli si partì per andare verso il torrente di Gerara, e ivi abitare:
18 Isaac reopened the wel s dug by the servants of his father Abraham and blocked up by thePhilistines after Abraham's death, and he gave them the same names as his father had given them.	18 E di nuovo votò altri pozzi scavati dai servi del padre suo Abramo, i quali, morto quello, i Filistei avean già tempo otturati: e pose loro gli stessi nomi, che avean già avuto dal padre.
19 But when Isaac's servants, digging in the val ey, found a wel of spring-water there,	19 E avendo fatto scavo nel torrente, trovarono dell'acqua viva.
20 the herdsmen of Gerar disputed it with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, 'That water is ours!' So Isaacnamed the wel Esek, because they had disputed with him.	20 Ma ivi ancora fu altercazione de' pastori di Gerara contro i pastori d'Isacco, dicendo quelli: L'acqua è nostra. Per la qual cosa da quello, che era avvenuto, chiamò quel pozzo col nome di Soperchieria.
21 They dug another wel , and there was a dispute over that one too; so he named it Sitnah.	21 E ne scavarono ancora un altro: e per ragione di questo ancora vi ebbe rissa, e lo chiamò Nimistà.
22 Then he left there, and dug another wel , and since there was no dispute over this one, he named itRehoboth, saying, 'Now Yahweh has made room for us to thrive in the country.'	22 E partitosi di là scavò un altro pozzo, per ragion del quale non v'ebbe contrasto: e perciò chiamollo Largura, dicendo: Adesso il Signore ci ha messi al largo, e ci ha fatti crescere sopra la terra.
23 From there he went up to Beersheba.	23 E salì da quel luogo a Bersabee,
24 Yahweh appeared to him the same night and said: I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not beafraid, for I am with you. I shall bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.	24 Dove gli apparì il Signore la stessa notte, dicendo: Io sono il Dio d'Abramo padre tuo: non temere; perocché io sono con te: ti benedirò, e moltiplicherò la tua stirpe per amore di Abramo mio servo.
25 There he built an altar and invoked the name of Yahweh. There he pitched his tent, and there Isaac'sservants sank a wel .	25 Per la qual cosa egli edificò in quel luogo un altare, e invocato il nome del Signore, tese il suo padiglione; e ordinò a' suoi servi, che scavassero un pozzo.
26 Abimelech came from Gerar to see him, with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of hisarmy.	26 Nel qual luogo essendo venuti da Gerara Abimelech, e Ochozath suo amico, e Phicol capitano delle milizie,
27 Isaac said to them, 'Why do you come to me since you hate me, and have made me leave you?'	27 Disse loro Isacco: Per qual motivo siete venuti da me, da un uomo odiato da voi, e da voi discacciato?
28 'It became clear to us that Yahweh was with you,' they replied, 'and so we thought, "It is time to havea treaty sworn between us, between us and you." So let us make a covenant with you:	28 Risposer quelli: Abbiam veduto, che il Signore è con te, e perciò abbiam detto: Si giuri, e si stringa tra noi alleanza,
29 that you will not do us any harm, since we never molested you but were unfailingly kind to you andlet you go away in peace. Henceforth, Yahweh's blessing on you!'	29 Di modo che tu non faccia a noi male alcuno, come noi pure nulla abbiam toccato di quel che è tuo, né abbiam fatto cosa in tuo danno; ma ti abbiam lasciato partire in pace ricco della benedizione del Signore.
30 He then made them a feast and they ate and drank.	30 Egli adunque imbandì ad essi il convito, e dopo che ebber mangiato, e bevuto,
31 Early next morning, they exchanged oaths. Then Isaac bade them farewell and they left him asfriends.	31 Levatisi la mattina fecero scambievole giuramento, e Isacco lasciogli andare in pace a casa loro.
32 It happened, the same day, that Isaac's servants brought him news about the well they had beendigging. 'We have found water!' they said to him.	32 Quand'ecco lo stesso dì arrivarono i servi d'Isacco, recando a lui la nuova del pozzo scavato, e dicendo: Abbiamo trovata acqua;
33 So he cal ed the wel Sheba, and hence the town is named Beersheba to this day.	33 Per la qual cosa lo chiamò Abbondanza: e alla città fu posto il nome di Bersabee, come lo ha fino al dì d'oggi.
34 When Esau was forty years old he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemathdaughter of Elon the Hittite.	34 Ma Esaù in età di quarant'anni prese per mogli, Judith, figliuola di Beeri Hetheo, e Basemath, figliuola di Elon del medesimo luogo:
35 These were a bitter disappointment to Isaac and Rebekah.	35 Le quali ambedue avevano disgustato l'animo d'Isacco, e di Rebecca.
