Genesis 26

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 There was a famine in the country -- different from the previous famine which took place in the time ofAbraham -- and Isaac went to Abimelech, the Philistine king at Gerar.	1 Il y eut une famine dans le pays -- en plus de la première famine qui eut lieu du temps d'Abraham-- et Isaac se rendit à Gérar chez Abimélek, roi des Philistins.
2 Yahweh had appeared to him and said, 'Do not go down to Egypt; stay in the country which I shalpoint out to you.	2 Yahvé lui apparut et dit: "Ne descends pas en Egypte; demeure au pays que je te dirai.
3 Remain for the present in that country; I shal be with you and bless you, for I shal give al thesecountries to you and your descendants in fulfilment of the oath I swore to your father Abraham.	3 Séjourne dans ce pays-ci, je serai avec toi et te bénirai. Car c'est à toi et à ta race que je donneraitous ces pays-ci et je tiendrai le serment que j'ai fait à ton père Abraham.
4 I shal make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven, and I shal give them al thesecountries, and al nations on earth wil bless themselves by your descendants	4 Je rendrai ta postérité nombreuse comme les étoiles du ciel, je lui donnerai tous ces pays et par tapostérité se béniront toutes les nations de la terre,
5 in return for Abraham's obedience; for he kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes and mylaws.'	5 en retour de l'obéissance d'Abraham, qui a gardé mes observances, mes commandements, mesrègles et mes lois."
6 So Isaac stayed at Gerar.	6 Ainsi Isaac demeura à Gérar.
7 When the people of the place asked him about his wife he replied, 'She is my sister,' for he was afraidto say, 'She is my wife,' thinking, 'The people of the place wil kil me because of Rebekah, since she is beautiful.'	7 Les gens du lieu l'interrogèrent sur sa femme et il répondit: "C'est ma sœur." Il eut peur de dire:"Ma femme", pensant: "Les gens du lieu me feront mourir à cause de Rébecca, car elle est belle."
8 When he had been there some time, Abimelech the Philistine king happened to look out of the windowand saw Isaac fondling his wife Rebekah.	8 Il était là depuis longtemps quand Abimélek, le roi des Philistins, regardant une fois par la fenêtre,vit Isaac qui caressait Rébecca, sa femme.
9 Abimelech summoned Isaac and said to him, 'Surely she must be your wife! How could you have said,"She is my sister"?' Isaac replied, 'Because I thought I might be kil ed on her account.'	9 Abimélek appela Isaac et dit: "Pour sûr, c'est ta femme!Comment as-tu pu dire: C'est ma sœur?"Isaac lui répondit:"Je me disais: je risque de mourir à cause d'elle."
10 Abimelech said, 'What a thing to do to us! One of the people might easily have slept with your wife.We should have incurred guilt, thanks to you.'	10 Abimélek reprit: "Qu'est-ce que tu nous as fait là? Un peu plus, quelqu'un du peuple couchait avecta femme et tu nous chargeais d'une faute!"
11 Then Abimelech issued this order to al the people: 'Whoever touches this man or his wife wil be putto death.'	11 Alors Abimélek donna cet ordre à tout le peuple: "Quiconque touchera à cet homme et à safemme sera mis à mort."
12 Isaac sowed his crops in that country, and that year he reaped a hundredfold. Yahweh blessed him	12 Isaac fit des semailles dans ce pays et, cette année-là, il moissonna le centuple. Yahvé le bénit
13 and the man became rich; he prospered more and more until he was very rich indeed.	13 et l'homme s'enrichit, il s'enrichit de plus en plus, jusqu'à devenir extrêmement riche.
14 He acquired flocks and herds and a large retinue. The Philistines began to envy him.	14 Il avait des troupeaux de gros et de petit bétail et de nombreux serviteurs. Les Philistins endevinrent jaloux.
15 The Philistines had blocked up al the wel s dug by his father's servants -- in the days of his fatherAbraham -- fil ing them in with earth.	15 Tous les puits que les serviteurs de son père avaient creusés, -- du temps de son père Abraham, --les Philistins le savaient bouchés et comblés de terre.
16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, 'You must leave us, for you have become much more powerful thanwe are.'	16 Abimélek dit à Isaac: "Pars de chez nous, car tu es devenu beaucoup plus puissant que nous."
17 So Isaac left; he pitched camp in the Val ey of Gerar and there he stayed.	17 Isaac partit donc de là et campa dans la vallée de Gérar, où il s'établit.
18 Isaac reopened the wel s dug by the servants of his father Abraham and blocked up by thePhilistines after Abraham's death, and he gave them the same names as his father had given them.	18 Isaac creusa de nouveau les puits qu'avaient creusés les serviteurs de son père Abraham et que lesPhilistins avaient bouchés après la mort d'Abraham, et il leur donna les mêmes noms que son père leur avaitdonnés.
19 But when Isaac's servants, digging in the val ey, found a wel of spring-water there,	19 Les serviteurs d'Isaac creusèrent dans la vallée et ils trouvèrent là un puits d'eaux vives.
20 the herdsmen of Gerar disputed it with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, 'That water is ours!' So Isaacnamed the wel Esek, because they had disputed with him.	20 Mais les bergers de Gérar entrèrent en dispute avec les bergers d'Isaac, disant: "L'eau est à nous!"Isaac nomma ce puits Eseq, parce qu'ils s'étaient querellés avec lui.
21 They dug another wel , and there was a dispute over that one too; so he named it Sitnah.	21 Ils creusèrent un autre puits et il y eut encore une dispute à son propos; il le nomma Sitna.
22 Then he left there, and dug another wel , and since there was no dispute over this one, he named itRehoboth, saying, 'Now Yahweh has made room for us to thrive in the country.'	22 Alors il partit de là et creusa un autre puits, et il n'y eut pas de dispute à son propos; il le nommaRehobot et dit:"Maintenant Yahvé nous a donné le champ libre pour que nous prospérions dans le pays."
23 From there he went up to Beersheba.	23 De là il monta à Bersabée.
24 Yahweh appeared to him the same night and said: I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not beafraid, for I am with you. I shall bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.	24 Yahvé lui apparut cette nuit-là et dit: "Je suis le Dieu de ton père Abraham. Ne crains rien, car jesuis avec toi. Je te bénirai, je multiplierai ta postérité, en considération de mon serviteur Abraham."
25 There he built an altar and invoked the name of Yahweh. There he pitched his tent, and there Isaac'sservants sank a wel .	25 Il bâtit là un autel et invoqua le nom de Yahvé. Il dressa là sa tente. Les serviteurs d'Isaac forèrentun puits.
26 Abimelech came from Gerar to see him, with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of hisarmy.	26 Abimélek vint le voir de Gérar, avec Ahuzzat son familier et Pikol le chef de son armée.
27 Isaac said to them, 'Why do you come to me since you hate me, and have made me leave you?'	27 Isaac leur dit: "Pourquoi venez-vous à moi, puisque vous me haïssez et que vous m'avez renvoyéde chez vous?"
28 'It became clear to us that Yahweh was with you,' they replied, 'and so we thought, "It is time to havea treaty sworn between us, between us and you." So let us make a covenant with you:	28 Ils répondirent: "Nous avons eu l'évidence que Yahvé était avec toi et nous avons dit: Qu'il y aitun serment entre nous et toi et concluons une alliance avec toi:
29 that you will not do us any harm, since we never molested you but were unfailingly kind to you andlet you go away in peace. Henceforth, Yahweh's blessing on you!'	29 jure de ne nous faire aucun mal, puisque nous ne t'avons pas molesté, que nous ne t'avons fait quedu bien et t'avons laissé partir en paix. Maintenant, tu es un béni de Yahvé."
30 He then made them a feast and they ate and drank.	30 Il leur prépara un festin, et ils mangèrent et burent.
31 Early next morning, they exchanged oaths. Then Isaac bade them farewell and they left him asfriends.	31 Levés de bon matin, ils se firent un serment mutuel. Puis Isaac les congédia et ils le quittèrent enpaix.
32 It happened, the same day, that Isaac's servants brought him news about the well they had beendigging. 'We have found water!' they said to him.	32 Or ce fut ce jour-là que les serviteurs d'Isaac lui apportèrent des nouvelles du puits qu'ilscreusaient et ils lui dirent: "Nous avons trouvé l'eau!"
33 So he cal ed the wel Sheba, and hence the town is named Beersheba to this day.	33 Il appela le puits Sabée, d'où le nom de la ville, Bersabée, jusqu'à maintenant.
34 When Esau was forty years old he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemathdaughter of Elon the Hittite.	34 Quand Esaü eut 40 ans, il prit pour femmes Yehudit, fille de Bééri le Hittite, et Basmat, filled'Elôn le Hittite.
35 These were a bitter disappointment to Isaac and Rebekah.	35 Elles furent un sujet d'amertume pour Isaac et pour Rébecca.
