Genesis 15

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Some time later, the word of Yahweh came to Abram in a vision: Do not be afraid, Abram! I am yourshield and shal give you a very great reward.	1 Después de estos sucesos fue dirigida la palabra de Yahveh a Abram en visión, en estos términos: «No temas, Abram. Yo soy para ti un escudo. Tu premio será muy grande.»
2 'Lord Yahweh,' Abram replied, 'what use are your gifts, as I am going on my way childless? . . .	2 Dijo Abram: «Mi Señor, Yahveh, ¿qué me vas a dar, si me voy sin hijos...?.»
3 Since you have given me no offspring,' Abram continued, 'a member of my household will be my heir.'	3 Dijo Abram: «He aquí que no me has dado descendencia, y un criado de mi casa me va a heredar.»
4 Then Yahweh's word came to him in reply, 'Such a one wil not be your heir; no, your heir will be theissue of your own body.'	4 Mas he aquí que la palabra de Yahveh le dijo: «No te heredará ése, sino que te heredará uno que saldrá de tus entrañas.»
5 Then taking him outside, he said, 'Look up at the sky and count the stars if you can. Just so wil yourdescendants be,' he told him.	5 Y sacándole afuera, le dijo: «Mira al cielo, y cuenta las estrellas, si puedes contarlas.» Y le dijo: «Así será tu descendencia.»
6 Abram put his faith in Yahweh and this was reckoned to him as uprightness.	6 Y creyó él en Yahveh, el cual se lo reputó por justicia.
7 He then said to him, 'I am Yahweh who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldaeans to give you thiscountry as your possession.'	7 Y le dijo: «Yo soy Yahveh que te saqué de Ur de los caldeos, para darte esta tierra en propiedad.»
8 'Lord Yahweh,' Abram replied, 'how can I know that I shal possess it?'	8 El dijo: «Mi Señor, Yahveh, ¿en qué conoceré que ha de ser mía?»
9 He said to him, 'Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old she-goat, a three-year-old ram, aturtledove and a young pigeon.'	9 Díjole: «Tráeme una novilla de tres años, una cabra de tres años, un carnero de tres años, una tórtola y un pichón.»
10 He brought him all these, split the animals down the middle and placed each half opposite the other;but the birds he did not divide.	10 Tomó él todas estas cosas, y partiéndolas por medio, puso cada mitad enfrente de la otra. Los pájaros no los partió.
11 And whenever birds of prey swooped down on the carcases, Abram drove them off.	11 Las aves rapaces bajaron sobre los cadáveres, pero Abram las espantó.
12 Now, as the sun was on the point of setting, a trance fel on Abram, and a deep dark dreaddescended on him.	12 Y sucedió que estando ya el sol para ponerse, cayó sobre Abram un sopor, y de pronto le invadió un gran sobresalto.
13 Then Yahweh said to Abram, 'Know this for certain, that your descendants will be exiles in a land nottheir own, and be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years.	13 Yahveh dijo a Abram: «Has de saber que tus descendientes serán forasteros en tierra extraña. Los esclavizarán y oprimirán durante cuatrocientos años.
14 But I shal bring judgement on the nation that enslaves them and after this they wil leave, with manypossessions.	14 Pero yo a mi vez juzgaré a la nación a quien sirvan; y luego saldrán con gran hacienda.
15 For your part, you wil join your ancestors in peace; you wil be buried at a happy old age.	15 Tú en tanto vendrás en paz con tus padres, serás sepultado en buena ancianidad.
16 In the fourth generation they wil come back here, for until then the iniquity of the Amorites wil nothave reached its ful extent.'	16 Y a la cuarta generación volverán ellos acá; porque hasta entonces no se habrá colmado la maldad de los amorreos.»
17 When the sun had set and it was dark, there appeared a smoking firepot and a flaming torch passingbetween the animals' pieces.	17 Y, puesto ya el sol, surgió en medio de densas tinieblas un horno humeante y una antorcha de fuego que pasó por entre aquellos animales partidos.
18 That day Yahweh made a covenant with Abram in these terms: 'To your descendants I give thiscountry, from the River of Egypt to the Great River, the River Euphrates,	18 Aquel día firmó Yahveh una alianza con Abram, diciendo: «A tu descendencia he dado esta tierra, desde el rió de Egipto hasta el Río Grande, el río Eufrates:
19 the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,	19 los quenitas, quenizitas, cadmonitas,
20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,	20 hititas, perizitas, refaítas,
21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.'	21 amorreos, cananeos, guirgasitas y jebuseos.»
